I visited the original LD in 1988..it was awesome. Does anybody remember the great big BELL as you walked down into the Dungeon..? It would chime (via sensor or a recording was played) and make you JUMP! 🤣 Visited the new Dungeon last November with my Daughter.. we loved that too, especially the rides!

Loved this place, went on a school trip when I was 11 years old. Was fascinated by the face projections, especially Jeckell and Hyde. Us lads spotted the trip switch as you approached the werewolf and sent the girls through saying that it was all fine.😅 A sadly missed attraction like so many in London. I also remember the multi screen cinema upstairs at The Trocadero called 'The London Experience ' in the early 80's, : Rock Circus ', again at The Trocadero in the late 80's and 'MOMI' - The museum of the moving Image at Waterloo. Hope that stirs some happy memories.

A tad late to the discussion - 13 years - but... thank you for posting this. I had; and maybe have this original programme from the London Dungeons, and it was wonderful to see again. It really brought back the eerie, macabre feel of the place as it was. It also held a number of original, historic torture instruments, live rats, and a resident silent black, hooded monk. The smell alone was, 'of the dank', and I could almost smell it here. I'm not sure if it was added after this, but there was a 'Pandemonium' room at the end, that was hell, a snake orgy and a towering animated satan - no: really. Honestly. I don't mind that they changed it, or that it now costs so much - just that nothing replaced it: that's the sad part.

The actors and rides would be one thing. But I feel it has become far too theatrical in execution and not confrontational in how bleak it is. The humour in the current version of the dungeons I believe was done after the success of Horrible Histories (likely) and the simplicity of the waxworks captures the bleak environment better.

The problem with the London Dungeons today, as well as with with movies / tv series in general, is that rather than relying upon the imagination of the viewer and relying on subtlety which is infinitely more terrifying (look at the 1976 movie Jaws, a Spielberg classic because the mechanical shark malfunctioned and Spielberg relied on the audience's imagination and it was way more scary), they try and make the horror too apparent with sound effects, cgi, excessive gore etc. People no longer need to imagine the fear, as it is contrived by someone else, therefore harder to relate to and hence less scary.

Sadly I haven't been to either- only the tiny knockoff in Niagara Falls (remember Oscar Wilde's joke -honeymoons and the Falls)!? Cant put it better. This museum tour gave me the creeps even on a small screen- like those diorama or little boxes full of "oddities ". I thought I detected movement too. Marvellous. Makes one wonder if there is state money behind Tusseau's! Certainly is odd given the changes in tech and young owds always wanting more, more, more. Loved Sweeney Todd and wife esp! Just watched the J. Depp film for Covid Sunday Matinee! Cheers and Namaste, Z.

Holy cow! I got to go to the London Dungeon when I was ten (I'm 49). I have the exact booklet somewhere! My parents and I were visiting from the US. We had gone to Madame Tussauds a few day before, where they had figures that moved. I spent the whole time freaked out that the LD figures were going to start moving. I had forgotten until I saw this, but I convinced my parent to go back a second time. However, that time they said I had an hour to have fun, but they would wait in the gift shop. They had gotten their fill of the LD. I loved it. For about a year after, I could open the booklet and the binding where the staples were still smelled like the LD. Thanks for sharing this and bringing back these memories.

Thanks for uploading this, it took me back a few years. When I went, some time in the early eighties I think, all this was there and some weird bit that was like a walk through of hell. I remember that scared me pretty well but also the hanging man, Vlad the impaler, Lady Bathory and a willow the wisp creature (not the Kenneth Williams one I hasten to add). I think that being able to just wander through it and know that most of the exhibits were of real historical things made it much more frightening. Took my nieces to the new one a couple of years back and they were just bored, I was just annoyed by the over acting and lack of atmosphere. If you're ever down in Cornwall the small Witchcraft museum is worth a visit, not frightening but has a nice vibe that kind of reminded me of the original London Dungeon - it may have helped that I was the only person in there on a dark and stormy day....

Everything is cheap thrills, bright blood and evil facial expressions when it comes to this stuff nowadays. I remember going to the previous dungeons on Tooley street probably back in 2012 and the balance of wax scenes and actors was just about okay. Looking back on these scenes that are well over 20 years old gives it a more educationally historical feel.

Never been to the London one but been to York Dungeon and yes it's not he same anymore. Merlin Entertainment has destroyed it by turning it into a big act for wannabe actors Disney land style. The old York Dungeon was way more atmospheric that made your mind think back to what is was like with creepy Gregorian chanting in the background. I can still hear the sounds of crushing bones and screams with the chanting

Hello, I'm creating a video feature about the London Dungeon in the 70s-90s with the designers of some of the old exhibits, is there a way to contact you? It would be interesting to hear more about them and what you remember. How did you know the Dungeon's original music? Im also interested in the Palladium Cellars after learning a bit about it recently!

  • @davotheframer

Sorry for the late reply, I don't login here very often. The original soundtrack if I remember correctly my sister purchased directly from the London Dungeon itself - I still have the LP. The Palladium Cellars was magical for me as a child, they used the latest technology (at the that time) to animate the figures; even using a holographic projection on Dr Jekyll's face.

Completely agree. Remember going as a kid in the early 90s. Was incredibly creepy. The exhibits were awesome, and there was so much there. The lifeless dummies made it so much more disturbing. I imagine the new one is very entertaining and fun, but a certain element of terror must be missing. The lighting, music and sheer horror made for an unforgettable experience. It also made me wonder what sort of life the past must have been. It was only as I got older that I realised that the people being tortured would actually have been very bad people, and the sort of people you wouldn't care if they died. Also, having been to places where kind of punishments exhibited here, and the conditions they would have lived in back then (eg Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa) made it all the more come to life

The strange thing is that this seems far more eerie and sinister than the current London Dungeon which is more like a theme park. This is how I remember it when I was 10, very weird and inspiring. I thought it was just the usual trick of time and rose tinted specs, but seeing this has made me realise the tension and atmosphere is far better. I originally went in the early 80s, revisited in the 2000s and was disappointed.

I did have a 1976 Ford Brochure celebrating the Montreal Olympics until I sold it on eBay. The chunky Ford brochures from the 70s through to the 1990s were brilliant. I'd love a Cortina 2000E or maybe a Capri II 3000 S. My parents once had a white Granada 2000 L like the one at 4:07. Interesting how the 'Consul' was still sold in 1975 with the 'Granada' being the luxury model. Just as the 'Scorpio' replaced 'Granada' in 1995.
