This is very inspirational, I've just bought a few lots of 'vintage' frames from auctions to frame my collection of old Japanese photographs and I'm going to follow these directions and, fingers crossed, resurrect the beauty of the frames.

Wonderful, informative and clear teaching of the gold leaf process. I had a hard time keeping up with the script. solution 1. slow down slide show . 2.Have someone read it while you do the demonstration 3. Put the script in a dowloadable file. There was so much good information...maybe a 4th solution have a slowed down version. ie if this was too fast, go to the slow version . Sympath.....version 2. Thank you.

@tgurlplaymate4u Thanks for the feedback and compliment :) Ok, if it's a small section, and that section is repeated on another part of the frame, you could just press some plasticine on the repeated section (first apply some kerosene or light oil to the decoration, so the plasticine doesn't stick) that corresponds with the missing piece; once you have the negative mould in plasticine, mix some plaster of paris and fill the mould. Once it's dry, remove the platicine, let it dry some more...>>

Hi there, there's different methods of toning gold & silver down- a couple of coats of Shellac will give the leaf a more mellow tone; or if you want a heavy antique look, you could oxidise the gold/silver leaf with liversulphate-gives silver a 'gunmetal' look. These are just a few methods-hope it's of help.

@calalily1941 Thank you for your kind comment. sorry you had a hard time keeping up with the script, firstly, I wanted that particular music track to accompany the video; secondly, I didn't want the slideshow to drag on too long, so I think 7 seconds approx per slide is adequate. May I suggest you just click on the pause button on each written slide, until you've fully read it? I Might do the script in a downloadable file in the near future, will let you know if I do. Thanks for watching.

@tgurlplaymate4u ...and then lightly clean off remaining plasticine traces with kerosene and soft toothbrush. If the piece doesn't fit where the missing decoration is, sand it with 150 grade sandpaper until it's level and roughly fitting; after gluing it in place with all-purpose glue, you could fill any remaining gaps with wallfiller or some other air drying compound (a lot of purists will use dental filler instead of plasticine, or other traditional materials instead of wallfiller, >>

Great video! I have a mid 1800s gold frame that needs some TLC just like what you showed in the video, how many hours should you wait between putting the gold leaf down and burnishing?

Thanks for the video. Very informative. I need some advice. I just purchased a beautiful frame at an antique shop. At first i thought the nicks and scratches gave it character but once i brought it home i noticed that the frame needs some repairing. Is there a way for me to send you a picture for your input in how to tackle the job?

The best way is to upload a video to KZread of it, then let me know and I'll do my best to help you with it. Thanks for your positive comment.

@tgurlplaymate4u ..for example, but it's more expensive and not necessary for normal frame repairs) If the missing piece is large, you may have to make a more complicated mould with liquid latex or similar. It's a bit difficult to explain, so I'll get around to making a video of the procedure, eventually! (also I'll show how to reproduce the effect of water-gilding on repaired areas without expensive re-leafing with real gold) Hope this was of some help.

+Lauren Brelsford Sorry for the late reply Lauren (comments are not appearing in my 'notifications') I use a variety of special brackets, but for the hobby framer; you could buy 'ring screws' with an 'O' on the end. Screw the ring screw into the side of the stretcher (try not to damage the canvas if possible) then use a normal screw to affix the screw ring to the back of the picture frame.

anything more availlable that can be used to rub through the gilding?

+Nathan Davis Anything's that's fine & abrasive (but not too abrasive) Dried rubbing compound, or even very fine grade steel wool '0000' grade, but you'd have to use it very carefully & with a light rubbing movement.
