    The only concern is this: you need to surface the pods because no 3D printer can print perfectly squared surfaces. You need to surface them on your CNC after you printed them if you want accuracy.

    I think you put a lot thought into this jig enough for me to purchase your plans along with the acrylic plate. The plate was the seller for me. You may want to consider making available the other CNC pieces you created. For me, I would never buy a Festool anything because of their cost and at seventy years plus I don’t see me buy anything CNC either. Great video, thank you. Frank

    THE ROUTER BIT NEEDS TO BE UNDER THE LEVEL OF THE TABLE OTHERWISE YOUR TRAPPING THE WORK PIECE BETWEEN THE BIT AND THE FENCE/TABLE! This could cause the work piece to be ejected like an arrow from a bow. Perhaps show us the table once you have used it and figured it out fully. You were right to be a little fearful of that setup.

  • @smedleywooddesign2219
    @smedleywooddesign22196 ай бұрын

    I agree with you, but for the profile I need to make and to make sure the material does not shift when routing I needed to put the router bit on top. If I did it the other way the material, making the wood piece stable, would be routed away and the stock would rotate when routing. I do have feather boards in place helping to prevent kick back. Thanks for your comments.

    The domino is not "controversial". I know that's a popular buzzword to get the clicks, but in all honesty, the people who seem to "hate" the domino (hate being a very strong and inaccurate description here; it's more akin to simply scoffing at the price of entry) are those who never touched one let alone used one, while those who love it (accurate term for good reason) are the ones who took the plunge and dropped the cash. I watch a ton of woodworking videos with a lot of them featuring the domino, and one thing I've never seen someone who spent their own money on the domino say is that they regret the purchase. I've said this before on other videos: regardless of the hobby, we tend to invest more time and money on things we're passionate about. So while the price of entry for the domino may be steep, so is the return on investment, which brings me to my next point and directly relates to the jig you made here: time is your most valuable asset. I've been down the road of making loose tenon jigs and the like, and while it always worked well for me, there's still a decent bit of time involved with setup, making new templates for different sized tenons, making the loose tenons, etc. So I got sick of all that; I just want to build projects, not build projects used to build projects. A couple of years back I bought a dowelmax, and I'm kicking myself for not having done it years ago. It's a beautifully crafted jig, as accurate as the domino, makes joints just as strong, just a bit slower, though not by a huge amount, especially if you buy an extra drill bit of the same size dowels you're using. It's around $225, which is still not a tiny amount of cash, yet not domino money either. Owning the dowelmax is what has kept me from investing in the domino. It's amazing. In regards to the price, I can say with confidence that I've spent well over $225 in my time making my loose tenon jigs and templates, just as I imagine you have on the jig in this video. Give it a look. Tl;dr, the domino is worth the investment if you're passionate about woodworking or if you make money with your woodworking. For a hobbyist, put that biscuit joiner back on the shelf at the home center, skip trying to engineer an elaborate "do-all" loose tenon jig and buy a dowelmax. The jig you came up with is quite nice though. edit to add: Subscribed, good content on your channel. A CNC is my next big tool investment.

  • @smedleywooddesign2219

    No, a CNC is not an alternative to the Domino. You could probable make the jig by hand with a paper template, temporary adhered to the acrylic.

    I'd like to share a tip about vacuum pods; try using high pressure laminate (HPL) for the pods. It is a material similar to Formica, only thicker. I have bought scrap pieces from a furniture factory, where they use it for table tops. The pieces I've got is app. 1/2" in thickness. Although it is a very hard material, it machines beautifully with tungsten carbide bits. I find it to be less slippery than HDPE, which is desirable in this application...

  • @smedleywooddesign2219

    The great thing about having a CNC is that you can CNC your own upgraded parts. I tend to 3d print all mine first to check they fit etc, then just machine them. I think the HGR15 are the way to go over the 12.

  • @Festivejelly

    it worked out great!, i was a bit concerned until i saw the featherboards 😄, as you say a few tweaks , the top pressure from another featherboard is a good idea, and you can run yards of moulding, id try putting a small slot in your table and adding a blunt point of hardwood, or a small bearing, you can tighten down to apply a little forward pressure at the point the moulding contacts the bit , but i call that a success✌
