Sheev Talks

Professional Nitpicker.

Just a channel that enjoys breaking things down to their barest point and analyzing what works and what doesn’t-particularly in storytelling. I believe that if we can assess what makes a story good or bad, we can better express how we feel about it and why. That is my goal.

Also just in case it’s not obvious, I mostly just talk about Star Wars. I do other stuff from time to time, but if you’re not a Star Wars fan, you’re likely not going to get much out of most of my videos; just a fair warning.

Love these movies, well, except for much of episode 1. They definitely have big issues and I accept how flawed they are. I've watched the Plinkett reviews so, so often, they're brilliant. There's still a lot there that makes the prequel movies valuable and worth watching. Not anywhere as bad as the sequel trilogy, there's nothing redeemable about them.

24:15 the official podcast literally did this exact same thing while they had a little segment talking about Star Wars,& used chirrut from rouge one as an example also some of them have a extreme bias of not liking Star Wars and what the rest of their argument as to all of star wars being badly written boils down to is "we think that mostly everything in Star Wars is horribly written, so you're an idiot if you enjoy it" and they also added in "you. Can't be excited for anything new. They add to Star Wars because they're going to make children's toys out of all of it" when they were specifically talking about the lightsaber whip that was shown in a trailer for a new show so I guess I'm a double idiot by their logic but whatever lol the only thing that they agreed on that was good was Andor

54:48 I would argue that the reason we are following this group of character is because they happen to land on this planet. The same reason we follow Superman, because he happens to be the only Kyptonian to survive the destruction of his planet. The criticism I would level at this film is the fact that they make it a coincidence that Luke grows up on the same planet with the same (sort of) family as Anakin

32:20 while something being boring can be subjective, there can also be many objective flaws in something that can be said to explain why something is boring. For instance you can tell me that you find Andor boring because you don’t connect with a character or don’t find the plot particular interesting, but all of those criticisms are objective concepts. If you were to ask someone why they find the Phantom Menace boring, it becomes significantly easier to find objective reasons as to why audience members may find it boring. Its characters motivations aren’t meaningfully fleshed out beyond a surface level. They rarely display emotion throughout the film. Characters rarely talk about how they feel and nearly only discuss the actions they are currently preforming or plan to preform. The chemistry between the actors is nearly non-existent when they aren’t given any meaningful interactions with each other. The stakes the of film are also less clearly defined, given that it is so early in the war, so it is essential for the film to display that complexity in an engaging way. One of the first, and most important things a writer needs to learn is how to deliver important but seemingly dull exposition in an interesting way. If you have a group of people at a board room meeting discussing future plans, that might not seem very interesting to the audience. But say you’re main character has to pee really bad, but is trying to hold it through the meeting as to not embarrass himself, that scene has just become significantly more intriguing and allows to audience to easily absorb information while being engaged with the story. That also assumes that the information itself is written in an engaging and concise way which isn’t always a strong suit if the prequels. All this to say that while saying something is boring can be an subjective statement, there are objective flaws that can prove the statement to be an accurate assessment for the majority of audiences Edit: I’ve only watched up to around this point in the video so I’m not sure how much of what I’ve said you touch on in you’re own criticism, I’m simply making a rebuttal to what you’ve said in this statement taking into account what you’ve said up to this point

31:36 not only is the title crawl attempting to convoy more information, it’s doing it in an overly complex way. Breaking it down we first hear that turmoil has engulfed the galactic republic due to the taxation of trade routes. So we’re assuming the taxation of trade routes is what is causing the Republic turmoil. So why would the Trade Federation want to resolve this matter? And what about this makes them greedy? After this we hear about the congress in the Republic endlessly debating until finally getting information on what we are immediately about to see which is that two Jedi Knights have been secretly dispatched to settle the conflict. The amount of political moving parts described to us in the crawl is much more extensive than the simply story of rebels attempting to flee a pursuing empire with plans to their ultimate Super-weapon. The crawl for the Phantom Menace can’t even accurately explain the relationship the Trade Federation and Republic have to the taxation of the trade routes. It implies that the republic is in turmoil due to the taxation, even when they themselves are the ones taxing them. So it becomes increasingly confusing the decipher what relationship the Trade Federation has to not only to the trade routes but also to the Republic itself. Obviously by my elaborate explanation you can also deduce that the plot laid out is significantly more confusing than the one in A New Hope, where the objectives of each faction are clearly laid out

So I haven’t watched any of the Spiderman movies, I just like watching your videos and learning from them, bad examples and all that. However, I’m writing a story with a similar character to Peter 🅱️ Parker, sort of, mostly the baby part. And I realized that both would be putting the child in their care in danger. I figured given the setting (post nuclear war) that my story would be able to justify the danger because of circumstances, but this video gave me an idea for a scene that really plays into the theme of the story, the setting, and the characters. So thanks for your work. It has an impact.

I feel like a lot of the issues stem from this being written first and foremost as an anthology series with the through lines between plots only established after the fact and the end goal only being to set us on the status quo from ROTS. You’re absolutely right. The series is definitely carried by people looking back fondly of isolated instances of fun and gripping moments and really interesting concepts that the show ultimately doesn’t really execute on all that well. Years down the line we’re only ever going to remember the high points and if you’re invested enough you’ll defend the lows.

I feel like honestly this could be a really good setup for more character development for peter in the third movie. Maybe peter saw how miles WAS incredibly capable in the first movie, and overcorrected how he thought about kids WAY too far. He could be taking away the wrong lesson from the first movie and seeing miles take matters into his own hands and having his whole "anyone can be spiderman" thing made him think that his baby is 100% capable, even though that's very incorrect. Even him being a PUSHOVER in this movie would make sense if he took the wrong lesson from miles, thinking that everyone else would know better than him or something. I think if they take that into the third movie, it could be a REALLY good character arc, and this could actually ENHANCE his character rather than ruin it. If not, then... Womp womp

I was under the impression that by selling the assassination they meant they expected Anakin to be vengeful in the aftermath and thought it was a factor that they could control because having a rightfully pissed off Anakin would help sell the whole cover story to the other bounty hunters not specifically just to sell it to the assassin himself.

It’s like the whole Game of Thrones situation of Ned never telling Cat the truth about Jon because if she was anything less than awful to a bastard that would raise a lot of questions to anyone that knew anything about her. Likewise, someone that’s violently attached to his loved ones as Anakin wouldn’t do anything less than what he does to avenge Obi-Wan and him having a calm collected about the whole situation would have set off some red flags even if the opposite meant having him as an obstacle in the mission. All that being said, I don’t think I’ve ever seen this arc in full as a kid so I don’t know how well that idea holds up either.

I personally view what Qui Gon was doing as sort of like, self lessness. It's not that he didnt have free will, its not that everyone was pre destined for one thing or another. It's more like the force is a being, a energy field, that can do anything, but rather then directly interfering, it offers itself to ANYONE who wants to use it. But the power poisons people who use it wrongly. Sort of like if a radiation leak occurs from a nuclear reactor. people misuse a starship or something with nuclear power cells on it to power some of it's systems. the shipi computer starts to freak out and tell people theres a problem (like visions of the force, telling people what to do to correct events in the world), except no one is listening. everyone is doing thier own thing and doesnt want to sacrifice their own time or life to deal with that problem. Qui Gon steps up, listens to the computer. and starts trying to repair events on the starship. comes across some kid that isnt trained or knowledgeable, but the computer identifies the kid as someone who will be able to grow up to be an excellent engineer based on his genetics and how his body/mind is so far. So quigon is trying to get this kid trained to be a engineer to fix the starship, deal with the radiation leaks, and get the ship back in running order. The jedi council or in this example, teh ships security team, tell him anakin doesnt seem fit to be trained as a ship officer. But Qui Gon says the ship said he literally can be one of their best engineers if hes trained. So its just a matter of do you listen to the wise voice trying to give good advice, or do your own thing. that is free will.

17:09 is it, though? He clearly knows what Miguel means and he intends to follow along, at least initially, his hyperbolic statement is meant to subtlely show us that Miguel is an extremist and that Peter isn't as obsessed or in agreement with the multiverse rules as Miguel is, which is why he ends up joining Miles' side at the end, not that he truly doesn't care for the multiverse at all, just disagrees with Miguel's attitude and definetly held some reservations about letting Miles' father die. Perhaps it is Miguels' trauma that you mention what makes Peter so lenient towards his extremist methods at first, as in, he understands where he's coming from? It's not being a "pushover", he's just trapped in the middle of two loyalities. And Perhaps that is why he shows Miguel his daughter and family? That he wants to lighten him up by having him interact with the little kid? It's a no brainer dude.

What can I say? You described my exact thoughts about Peter in the sequel, almost as if you read my mind, even with the same alternatives I thought he had, like leaving Mayday in the Spider Society HQ and not taking her to the uncertain and potentially dangerous mission to find Miles. I love him so so much, he's my favorite ITSV character too and my favorite Peter Parker of all time, I literally ugly cried from happiness the moment he briefly showed up in the first ATSV trailer, the moment he started speaking in the second trailer and finally when I first saw the movie. But I didn't walk out of the theater feeling as happy as I thought I would be after seeing him again for the first time in four years and a half, instead I felt disconfort from how out of character he felt. The more I thought about it, the less I liked his intervention in the movie at all. I too hope BTSV fixes all these issues a lot of us seem to have with him in ATSV with a really *really* good explanation as to why he did the things he did, as well as a flashback revealing off-screen ways he tried to fix his mistakes like trying to reach out to Gwen after being violently returned home, but ultimately being unable to due to her universe being parent-locked in his watch, but I fear that still won't make all the odd stuff he did and inaction he committed on-screen magically disappear, there's no way they can convincingly recontextualize all that mess 😔

I love your channel so much dude. It's like you're able to reach into my brain and turn my clusterfuck of half formed vibes and actually give them structure and meaning. I knew I found parts of the film really, really offputting - and I think it was in large part because of the tonal mess that was Peter B. Parker. Being worn out is not the same as apathy, and it feels like the writers took a moment to turn the tired-but-caring Peter from the first film into an energetic-but-apathetic Peter for the second. He isn't my only problem with it (though like you I also thought it was ultimately good) but it is a neat encapsulation of the problem. It's also reinforcing in my mind that people had no idea what made Into the spiderverse as good as it was in the first place, so are entirely unable to replicate it or recognise it when they see it again (or don't, in the case of multiverse of madness).
