We’re Adam and Vicki. A nomadic duo who traded land life for a life afloat. Follow us to see what we see and what it's like living a nomadic lifestyle. After spending 2.5 years exploring New Zealand's coastline, Tāiko is now a CAT 1 registered boat and we have made our first offshore passage sailing from New Zealand to Fiji where we currently are.
In December 2021 we moved aboard our sailboat Te Tāiko, a Chico 40. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. Our plan? We try not to make too many plans but we're currently in Fiji and will see where wind and sea will take us next. In the meantime, follow along with us as we navigate this lifestyle whilst sharpening our skills sailing New Zealand waters. We release a new video every Sunday.

Use the roller from prop speed next time it’s way faster etc
Ok thanks for the tip, we will check that out next time
i wuulc never leave
It’s so beautiful
Hi folks great to be on board with you for the trip your camera it a bit blurry or out of focus sometimes makes it a bit hard to watch. 😊
Thank you and thanks for watching. Thank you for the feedback. Yes, we try but we’re still learning and we were still getting use to our smaller Sony camera. However, on our crossing to Fiji we lost both our drone and our smaller Sony so relying mostly on GoPros and our bigger Sony until we can afford a new camera. Wish us luck and we hope you will continue to follow us on our journey. Adam & Vicki
All good mate, looking forward to seeing what adventures you guys get up to 😊
Thank you 🙏
good for you guys
Thank you 🙏
I use Henleys prop wax. Warm the prop with a heat gun and smear it on! Lasted well on my Putiki Bay mooring.
We’ve never heard of Henley’s prop wax. Will look into it. Thanks for sharing that.
Nice boat -- BUT -- this is hard to say to you guys but you must hear it. NZ is becoming such a far leftist anti-American anti-free country that you should simply move and come here. The idea that your commies want you to "certify" your boat before being "allowed" to leave NZ is a total disgrace. Maybe you can't see how you appear, but to an outsider you look completely beaten down and robbed of your sense of freedom and adventure. GET THE HELL out of NZ forever. If you need help getting free and moving here just ping me. I will set up a team to rescue you and get you a new start. Take action. What happened to your country during the big cold was an international disgrace.
Came here to see what it takes to leave New Zealand by sailboat with CAT 1. Got what felt like 10 minutes intro and 10 minutes manual bilge pump. Thanks for sharing anyway.
I thought you was gonna say all the requirements for CAT 1. I was curious being from the USA we don't have any of the sort. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for your message and for watching. It’s a long list but you can Google Yachting New Zealand Offshore Safety Standards to see what NZ registered yachts have to meet to go offshore. It took us 3 years because of the expense for us to meet these standards plus the upgrades we had to make to be able to live/work full time on Te Tāiko. Tāiko had never been offshore so we had a long list! It’s quite a big thing.
I don’t think you explained why a Cat 1 is necessary. Is it just to get insurance for offshore sailing. Or will the Customs people not stamp your passport if you try to clear out of the country? Did you really put in a whole new engine? You got a mention on James the sailor man Instagram page today. I see you made it successfully to Fiji, well done 👍👍
Thanks for commenting. Yes Customs require a Cat 1 certificate when clearing out of NZ if your vessel is NZ registered. So it’s an absolute requirement for NZ vessels departing NZ. Yes we replaced the aging engine with a BetaMarine45T. It’s a great little engine. Thank you our first offshore passage went well and we are now plotting a course to remote eastern islands of Fiji which we will show in future episodes. Thanks heaps for watching! Cheers Adam
Good vid thanks. I'm working out what to do for my boat ie a fourth reef point in the main or buy a trisail. Any thoughts? I see some people install a separate track for the trisail but I'm not sure what's wrong with using the existing mainsail track which is how I think you were doing it. I suppose advantage of the separate mainsail track is you can have the sail up on the cabin top all ready to go plus you can set the thing lower down the mast lowering the center of effort slightly. Disadvantage would be the extra track riveted on the outside of the mast might be a potential point of failure.
Thanks for your comment and question. We were having a new main made so we had four reefing points put in, the fourth is about the same area as the trysail. For the trysail we had a track fitted so that like you say the sail can be set up and used independently of the main. I think the main issue for sharing a track would be having to remove the mainsail to fit the trysail - that isn’t easy even at the dock let alone if preparing for heavy weather at sea. I would recommend going the extra mile to have dedicated storm sails (with a separate trysail track) so you know you have options. Thanks again for watching! Cheers Adam
Have a wonderfulcand safe time
The pain is real. I like doing most boat jobs, but the list keeps growing, now I'm putting them off, which is the worst thing to do. Just exhausted.
I hear you and think you can get burnt out over time if working really hard on it. I think important to go sailing to get the payback/positive side
Well done thanks for the video 👍👍
Thank you and thanks for watching!
I live just up the road from the Currach🍺🍺
Awesome. Beautiful spot Tryphena. Thanks for watching.
Just send me a thumbs up every day
Please be safe
Fantastic sanctuary and birdlife overview thanks, a great place to visit.
Thanks, TT!
Yes very interesting. Our boat has hydraulic steering & I haven't worked out a redundancy method for it yet. A hydrovane is one of idea, but still haven't given up on an emergency tilla & I won't untill I work something out. Good job guys. Keep up the good work 💪. SV Kiwi Lady Opua Bay of islands New Zealand 👍🏿
Thanks Russell. That’s boats, always something to think about! Thanks for watching and we may see you in the Bay of Islands soon.
Thanks for the video. We haven't even thought that the tiller won't fit and it's directly in behind the steering wheel
Thank you Janine!
Excellent and great belt and braces approach.
Thank you! And thanks for watching
Nice Chico. I know them well. kzread.info/dash/bejne/d3t8maSFhcTJfJs.html
Thanks for commenting and nice clip sailing under storm sails! What’s the Chios name and where is/was it based?
Look out for Wonderwall a Beneteau Oceanis 46.1
See you out there. Tchau.
Yes we hope so - see you out there!
Haa! I came down the hill from the loo the same way as you, past the rope swing..and yes it was a bit treacherous! 😆
But I bet you weren’t as dramatic! Miss you guys ❤️
@@sailingtetaiko …well I wasn’t on camera! Which is probably good as the odd “f*k me !” may have popped out on the way down!!😂😂
Love it!
Gotta love the Barrier 🙂
We’re with you on that!
A great area so well presented by you both!
Hi TT, thanks so much for the feedback on the Smokehouse Bay visit. It’s such a great place and we love receiving feedback on our videos - thank you! As always, thank you for watching. Cheers Vicki and Adam
Hi there. What diameter dyneema did you use?
@janine6310 we used 6 mm it’s the one with the red indicator core which shows chafing and is approved by YNZ in terms of Cat 1. Let me know if you want more details re materials or specific splicing - it’s pretty easy once you know how.
Adam is very handy and that looks a lot safer
Thank you Karol! It definitely needed the upgrade.
Hi Vicki, I'm a solo kiwi sailor currently in Florida doing some needed work on my 28ft boat before continuing on with my journey home, GOOD on you for being brave and making the steps into what I'm sure will be some awesome adventures for you guys.. your video makes me homesick for NZ cruising. I look forward to more from you both . .. .
@psr1868 Thank you for your kind comment and for watching the video. We do have some beautiful cruising grounds here. It sounds like you w been on an adventure of your own. Our first boat was a nova 28 so I have some idea of how much room there is! Did you leave from New Zealand? We may see you somewhere along the way.
@@sailingtetaiko Hi Vicki, oh yes I've been cruising a longtime now, Some 33 years with 96,000 miles and 76 countries to date. I'm in my sixties now, this is my second cruising boat ,down sizing from a 42' yawl to my current 28' stoutly built offshore cutter . I sailed to the south Pacific from New Zealand, one thing leads to another and 100,000 miles later I'm still at it . I've zig zagged all over the planet. Next year I should be home in NZ ,The intention is cruising in NZ summers then escape to Fiji,Tonga etc for the winters . My boat is "WAIRUA" I'm sure we will cross paths.. Cheers Paul.
@@psr1868 Hi Paul, that's incredible! Sounds like you should have a channel of your own. What an adventure. You never know where this lifestyle will take you. That's our next move to depart New Zealand waters and we're on the countdown now 😬We'll definitely keep a look out for you. All the best with the boat work.
that is my Vicki, facing her fears and breaking barriers
Thank you
Hi. I am looking at a Chiko 40. same deck issue. did you get the problem sorted?
@jaittPenguin we have been so happy with our Chico 40 and regularly receive confirmation from others in the boating community as to the soundness of the design. We have worked on other issues to get her ready for offshore sailing rather than tackling the decks right now. However I did remove the teak from the cockpit floor and replaced with ply overlayed with fibreglass and finished with two part epoxy nonskid finish which was a trial for whether we could manage doing the deck refurbishment ourselves. The result was very pleasing and from that trial for us we now know we would tent the boat for a few months and do the work ourselves. Boat builder quote was $30 k plus so DIY is our choice. Overall I’d rather have a Chico with a aging teak deck than no Chico. They are such sound yachts.
@@sailingtetaiko thanks. my mates brother has one too and says the same. happy travels
Thank you and all the best with yours as well.
Flying fish in NZ? wow. new to me too...
We found it so bizarre, especially when the first one flew by and only one of us saw it 😆
love Te Taico's song :)
Thank you! We felt very fortunate to have Charlotte put together that song for us. She is amazing!
Think you need wind for that thing to work .
Yes, you do which we have plenty here in New Zealand. However, it has another crucial function for us which it also is an independent rudder.
@sailingtetaiko Yeah, im a little north of Nelson, so I know all about the wind. Having a self steering system with its own rudder can be a life saver if something were to happen offshore. Tell your Mrs not to be afraid you have a very capable boat.. Have fun, guys .
@sproket168 yeah the windvane was a big expense but it steers well and we are happy to have extra redundancy. All the best in Nelson and thanks for your comments. Cheers Adam
I would be man down
🤣
Excellent! Plus your open discussion/reasoning around subject really adds to the content … well done⛵️
Thank you very much!
seeing as the music was not played during the drill, I don't know what you are complaing about
Please drop the dance party music for what most would consider a serious topic. (at least even out recording volume levels)
@tubeyerself2 thank you for watching and for taking the time to make a comment on our man overboard video. We disagree with you that the music is inappropriate (or that it diminishes from the seriousness of the topic) and of course we take the topic seriously hence we’re out practicing and refining our protocol. Thanks again for watching and stay tuned for part 2 of our MOB drills in a fortnights time.
I know where I would be heading
😂
Tasmania looks awesome
Thanks yes it felt like once in a life time experience 🙏
What boat did you deliver?
This delivery was a Kaufman 48.
@@sailingtetaiko Nice boat mate. I'm in Tasmania. My ride is a Duncanson 29 😉
Thanks so much for watching and your comments 👌 I checked out the Duncanson 29 and they look like great vessels 👍
Great video thanks for making it 👍👍 We are hauling out our new 40 year old yacht in January
Thanks so much for watching Andrew. Always a job to be done on a boat! All the best with your haul out in January. 😊
So sorry😢
Nice to get an update, and good to hear that you are going to put out some more videos, Cat 1, exciting times ahead.
Thanks so much for following and commenting - it means a lot to us. Yes the Cat 1 journey has been a good one so far. We are almost there and will keep ticking off the jobs! Keep a watch out for our next video this coming Sunday. Cheers, Adam
Are you full time live aboards with your jobs?
Yes we are. We have been for 2 years. Most of our work is remote and does require us to travel at times.
Yay your alive, lol. Welcome back guys. Wow, what a cool job you have. Such fun. Keep up the good work 💪. I look forward to watching your next video. 👍 SV Kiwi Lady Opua Bay of islands New Zealand.
Thanks so much Russell and thank you for watching. We hope all is going well with you and your boat!
@@sailingtetaiko slowly but surely.
your channel is awesome
Thank you!
Great video. As an armchair sailor, bootcamp videos would be interesting to gain an understanding of sailing. Also an explanation of terms like broad reach would be very helpful. Thanks.
Thanks so much for watching and for your comment! Also really appreciate your suggestion. I will bear this in mind. Please stay tuned as we progress Skippers Bootcamp in upcoming months! All the best for now. Adam
I have a 84 Chico 40 Le Genevieve, in the Marlborough Sounds. Enjoying watching your videos, very similar interior from what I can tell. It used to be Cat 1. We love it, bulletproof boats.
Wow that’s cool we love hearing from other Chico owners! Thanks so much for commenting and we will keep an eye out for you on Le Genevieve! All the best, Adam
