A story that needs to be included in the history books...instead of just glorifying ancestors of people whose families have been here a long time.

Just found this on youtube. Thank you so much for the history lesson, I had no idea of this connection between Mexico and Ireland. It's lovely that you continue remembering, and that you play the bagpipes in honour of that time. If people put down their weapons and picked up the bagpipes it would be a very happy and joyful world. E❤

Much has been written regarding the San Patricio Battalion in the Mexican War. This publicity seems to portray all Irish as in favor of the Mexican cause. Nothing could be further from the truth! Mexico recruited native Irish to settle in South Texas, mainly to form a buffer between the warlike Comanche Indians and Mexico proper. These Roman Catholic Irish were recruited in Ireland and from recent Irish immigrants in centers of Irish immigration such as New York City and Baltimore. They settled in South Texas in the area of what is now San Patricio and Refugio Counties. Most of these Irish fought for the cause of Texas Independence and many of them fought for the United States in the War with Mexico. My third great uncle, William Quinn was one of the Irish expats living on a land grant in South Texas. He was among the Texans who fought at what became the massacre at Goliad. William Quinn was killed in the Battle of Coleto Creek on the day before Fannin surrendered the Texas forces at Goliad. His son. Patrick Quinn, also born in Ireland, was at Goliad and signed the Texas Declaration of Independence in that location. Patrick Quinn was captured but, escaped before the Mexican troops massacred the captured Texan prisoners. If you look at a listing of the prisoners murdered at Goliad, you will find many Irish surnames. Patrick Quinn's uncle, my third great grandfather, Felix Hart born in Ireland, was murdered by Mexicans because of his support of Texas independence and Felix Hart's son, Timothy Hart also signed the Texas Declaration of Independence at Goliad. Later, in the Mexican American War, many of the Irish who had settled in San Patricio and Refugio Counties, fought for the United States, some like Patrick Quinn and his cousin Timothy Hart fought in the Texas Ranger company of Mabry "Mustang" Gray which was mustered into the U.S. Army as the Texas Mounted Volunteers. The settlement of native Irish in South Texas which took place about the same time as Stephen Austin was colonizing East Texas is a little known facet of Texas history. I was never taught anything about these Irish expats when I went to high school in Texas.
