I’m more versed in striking than grappling, so would Judo be better as a complimentary art to wrestling? Like if I was a Muay Thai master (I’m far from it, still beginner/intermediate) and decided to learn some Tae Kwon Do to deepen my arsenal, would adding Judo to a Wrestling foundation be of the same nature?

Hey, just discovered tour KZread channel. Excellent work, very enjoyable and informative content. I'm curious why you went from bjj to judo? I am older than you and wanting to return to martial arts, mostly for fitness, self defence and socia. Not for sport/comp. I like the idea of Judo, but get the impression that its mostly geared towards young fit athletes wanting to compete? Also perhaps not ideal for self defence, as lacks striking? Cheers

Hey brother, thanks for tuning in. Here's the video i made way back when where i explain the switch. kzread.info/dash/bejne/q5WN0bCcdKram5M.html And yes, Judo is mostly geared towards youth, competition, olympics, but a great skill to have if you can find a club that caters to recreational practionners, and they are out there. For self defence you need both grappling and striking imo, if you can only pick one i would go with striking, so boxing, kick boxing. muay thai. With that said, Judo has the throws, the sweeps, the ground techniques with chokes and joint locks, which are all useful for self defence. A solid throw on concrete on a untrained opponent can send a man easily to the hospital. Let me know if you have any other questions, Osu!

A good judo coach will instil in his students and assistant instructors a duty-of-care for their older students, especially those who do not or cannot compete anymore. A lot of injuries occur when younger people are hell bent of proving themselves in some way and use new or much older students as rag dolls to show how good they are on the mat. It is normal human behaviour but it should not be allowed in the dojo. We should all park our egos should at the door before entering. If you want to prove how good you are, do it in competition, not against lower belts or older practitioners during training. You will find that older students are generally not there to compete against anyone as they have nothing to prove; they are there for the love of it so please exercise caution when training with them. I don't mean we should wrap them in cotton wool - just be mindful that they are more vulnerable to injury. The thing is, injuries take a lot longer to heal, it at all, when you get older. I am now 60 and after 4 decades of doing martial arts, including both striking and grappling arts, all the injuries I sustained during my martial arts journey limit what I can do now. But as long as remain fit and healthy and don’t push myself too much, I hope I can continue to train. Younger, stronger and more agile students can learn from their older but more experienced students, so treat them with respect and they will enjoy training with you.

For it i had to learn the kata and compete with 6 other strong black belts and win at least 4 matches. This were the conditions of my 5th dan sensei.

I think making a martial art safer is down right stupid. I 100% get the kid part but the idea of removing something in a literal combat art because of safety is imo disrespectful to idea of judo (or any martial art). Judo i think would have a resurgence in alot of places if the stop focusing on the sport and more of the art. BJJ became an overnight sensation because of the effectiveness it had in ufc 1. People want to do what is effective and removing an aspect that decreases the effectiveness of the martial art is going to decrease people wanting to join. The sportiness of judo is watering down the Art. I think sports are a part of judo but it being the main thing for it is bad.

  • @OGFITNESS

Kano the founder, remove the dangerous aspect of Jiujitsu and made it into Judo, by doing this it allowed for the art to continue as a sport all while retaining its culture and philosophy. It also allowed for people to practice at a 100% without permanently injuring themselves. This was genius, not stupid. Osu🥋

I think wrestlers close distance better than judo bc you can shoot from further away. It allows you to rush a taller person and take out there legs easier than clinching with them to throw or trip. I love both sports but gonna say wrestling on this one.

I think judo is better than wrestling, because as a solo grappling art, judo has throws as well as submissions, ... wrestling has better takedowns but once on the ground your arsenal is limited and jiu jitsu has better submissions but what good will that do if you lack any ability to get your opponent on the ground to begin with ... you shouldn't even go willingly to the ground anyway, so all in all I'd say judo and boxing are a better combo than wrestling and boxing

Of course Danthewolfman can make Aikido wrist locks ork, just like Chin-Na, Judo, Jiujitsu techniques, all of those techniques Dan trained for, while wrestling and getting pressured and dealing with the aliveness and energy of the opponent lands that lock. Of curse! Because Danthewolfman has some street fight experience, has experiences dealing with resisting attackers, was a bouncer, had wrestled, he can make it work because it's not all about perfect technique which you KZread Martial artists want it to be, nor whatever young white suburban American male fantasizes what the perfect BJJ technique or perfect lock technique or perfect striking technique is. It's simply objective driven and goal driven: I want to knock you out, or catch your leg, or apply some choke on you at ALL COST! Whatever ends justify the means, at any cost, not the ends beholden to a particular means which freezes you up. That's the weakness of a purist and dogmatic person, who only glorifies the MMA and street violence, but has little experience dealing with that energy.

Man! Bruce has so much powerful punchs and kicks having so little pounds, It's indeed very little pounds, a Normal and Healthy 5,7f man can achieve 180-200 pounds no problem, me and my friend we are very muscular 5,7f boys, my friends is even more muscular and heavy than me so is crazy how he grow to sides haha, So we are the "small" and weaker poor baby males dwarfs so if we can achieve that, Bruce could also, i guess.... Well we come from Hercules family, even the female is fucking strong on my family, my little sister is much strong and taller than a lot of men sooo, even my father sister is a beast! So genetics is kind important to that i guess. But stiil the Bruce pounds have much more strengh than average male pounds, so he could not need much to match the strengh of a big boy if he had the genetics to do so... Of course...

imagine a life where you do nothing because you're constantly in fear of injuring yourself or destroying your body. You have to live without fear of the future because the future is not guaranteed. Do what you enjoy and don't over do it. I suppose BJJ, or any martial art, will cause injury sometimes...but the question is, what would the alternative injury be if we all sat on our asses watching TV 24/7.

How to not let BJJ destroy your body: replace BJJ with Judo 😂 Jokes aside. Like OG Fitness recommends, Stretch and joint prep and strength training is a must for all athletes. Even if you lift %60-%70 of your PR. It gets those books and crannies and muscle imbalances from martial arts sparring. Whenever you see professional NBA or NFL players highlight videos, sometimes you see them strength training before practice. Sometimes even after games, because they found that strength training during season into the playoffs helps the players perform Better. Combat athletes should do the same! The trouble with BJJ guys is they depend on the quick stretches before class and that’s it. Then they spar in and out all day for months then Bam! Injury
