Did my first judo class at 32 years old yesterday after a 12 year hiatus from martial arts. I was worried I would feel like an old man and would injure my self right away but I got a good partner, and my worries went away. Made me realize how a lot of these talks of injuries really hinges on having a partner that cares about your health and can also work in some controlled chaos. It was great. If you want to do it, you should try

I agree with you: "Judo is the ultimate grappling sport"- and it's also very important for building self defense skills in my opinion.

I'm yellow belt and had randori last week with white belt that I have never seen before in our dojo during last year. His skill set was way more advanced than mine. He was so aggressive, my legs are blue now, it was almost a street vibe ))) I feel more safe to play with green/blue belt but reminded myself not to be mellow and less romantic.

Sometime guys are white belt but are athletic, aggressive, and or have some type of grappling experience, thats why you can never underestimate anyone and always work on technique and strategy, so that you can handle these types of guys. Your legs are blue! That means a lot of sweep attempts right? 😂. What do you mean by less romantic? 🤔

@@OGFITNESS Thanks for your replies, OG! Yes, blue legs because of sweep attempts but it was more like kicks ))) I can't imagine how UFC fighters stand real kicks on their legs. About getting less romantic: I forgot that I came to dojo to learn self-defense, but got super comfortable with "rules of the game", which makes it really friendly, being in the club and training in a safe way. This guy reminded me not to forget that nobody will be gentle in a street fight or probably same during competition.

Work on your grip outside of the dojo and you will very little issues with fingers I have a very strong grip due to lifting background and a couple yesrs in, I have no issuex with fingers. Now knees are an issue with me close to 40 What i will say, the more i neglect leg work outside of judo, the more i feel it in my knees Do squats/lunges and do them correctly. You can do bodyweight if you don’t have access to weights. I find a stronger quad will help protect your knees. Judo is a contact sport. Injury is always a risk. So is a game of basketball or football/soccer I also agree about strong core. If your core is strong, you will be much more stable throughout Judo gets a bad rep for injuries, but many are also getting plenty of wear and tear in BJJ. Yeah the impact isn't close, but the joints, neck and back get twisted in many different ways. I'm no expert, far from it. But i think we need to stretch and train properly away from the dojo and most importantly as slightly older guys recover well Great video again brother

How many private lessons would be sufficient? Would 3 or 4 a month get you to a point where you can start attending a general class? Can you make Brown Belt in 4 years doing this?

Is Judo's ground game, better than BJJ's standup game? And, if so, can Judo newaza hold its own against BJJ - in short, could you get away with focusing solely on Judo, or should you mix it with BJJ? I'll be looking to do some muay thai as well. BJJ's guard pulling leaves me with questions - I saw one video, where Gordan Ryan spent the entire fight standing with his back towards his opponent - if he done that in a boxing, judo, or street fight, then he would have got knocked out, slammed into the ground, and chocked out - that., along with its slow methodical pacing, really left me questioning the real work applicability of BJJ...
