Mr. Bloch's is definitely the best, most refined recording of this piece on KZread. I guess the only one who might had it played better could have been Mr. Bach himself.

According to the sheet of this piece that I have, there are no arpeggios in the 'tutti' parts at the beginning as well as the end of this movement but just a continuation of simultaneous chords played together. However, I find this arpeggios-version much more graceful, and I tried to play that way, too. It sounds as if the subtlest nuances of colors contained in each chord started to seep out like shimmering lights when they are broken into arpeggios. I guess musicians in the period of Bach or Vivaldi actually played more freely with this kind of room for improvisation than today, didn't they?

I had never heard of Boris Bloch before I ran across this video, but this is by far the best interpretation of Gretchen am Spinnrade I've ever heard. I think many are familiar with Yuja Wang's performance because she frequently uses it as an encore, but after hearing Mr. Bloch's interpretation, I realized that Ms. Wang plays it too darn fast and loses much of the nuance. I can hear things in this performance that are totally buried in other versions. Bravo!

Wow, this is a real treat to listen to and watch! For me it always adds to the experience if it is obvious the performer is enjoying the music! And Maestro Bloch certainly seems to enjoy this piece! :) The work itself is wonderful - the orignal by Dargomizhsky is already fantastic and Liszt manages to add a layer or two of diabolical mischief to it in his reworking. It might as well be called Mephisto Tarantella. :) Brilliant! Thank you Maestro!
