    I’ve been watching a bunch of your videos. I just bought a AB dinghy and it’s needing some attention, but still very usable in its current condition. I figured I would use it until it finished falling apart and then I would be ready financially to buy another one. Your videos have pretty much convinced me that that’s further down the line than I thought it would be. I’ve got 2 of the 3 chambers holding air, my next project is to change the valve in the third chamber and then to paint the bottom, it’s chipped on more than one rock but I can’t detect anything more than that and then I plan on applying inflatable bottom paint as it spends all of its time in the water and is kinda a hassle cleaning it about every 2 weeks. I’ve figured out where to get the seat holders and how to put new ones on thanks to your videos. There aren’t any tears or big holes, but it needs a paint job. It’s a hard bottom and a new one is ridiculously expensive and if I can get some more years out of this one, all the better. I’m going to sew up a “tent” for it to help keep the rain out… not for camping, but you never really know.

    If I have a floor that is only coming apart from the tube about 10 inches on one side (not the direct front) would it still be better to peel it all the way off and re-do it all like you did here? Or if the glue isn't to bad elsewhere, could I just fix that one area. Any tips on how to tell? If its coming apart in one area is it safe to assume all the glue is old and shot?

  • @gashopperinc

    Good question... well I should be doing a video soon on that exact topic. But a good sign that your tubes are finished is when the skin is badly damaged that you can see the inner threads of the fabric throughout the tops of the tubes.

  • @gashopperinc

    Yes, unfortunately you'll have to remove the floor boards to do that repair. It is an inconvenience, but has to be done to relieve tension on the fabric.

    Glad, this confirms what I was doing. Re-Adhering transom to tubes and other parts - do you typically do a dish soap wash down first? I am about to grab demel - and sand down the old glue, and re-apply the two part. Then after cure, going to give the thing a nice scrub down - and add a UV protectant. The one you used on this video, a good application for Ocean environments or..?

  • @gashopperinc
    @gashopperinc9 күн бұрын

    I do normally give the boats a quick wash down to search for leaks and clean out any debris before any repair work is done. Gives less chances of dirt, debris and what nots from finding there way to your working area.

    I have a 14 ft. novurania ( 1988 model canguro 420 gs / Hypalon) great shape/no uv damage but was stored deflated for 8 yrs. It how has micro leaks on all 3 chambers. Questions: How much should I pour into each tube and how long is the working time? Also how long does it take to cure/fully dry and how long to give it a 2ed coat if needed. Great vids...Thanks, Joe

  • @gashopperinc
    @gashopperincКүн бұрын

    Hey Joe. Generally a 1/3 of the bottle if sufficient. You want to coat the chamber walls so it can fill in those micro leaks. Dry time is usually 24 hours. But if it's puddled in the chamber and hasn't coated the chamber walls, it can stay a liquid for longer periods. Agitation and heat help cure this product quicker. Air and pressure are the activators to start the curing process.

    Anything can be fixed. Salt and UV can have drastic effects on inflatable boats, especially those with PVC fabric. You can always add an additional layer of skin to the affected damaged area. But if the skin is bad, then sometimes it's best to let it go instead of becoming a money pit. Couldn't tell you in your situation as the boat isn't in front of me to make that assessment.

    Thank you for tuning in!!! I have videos for inner patch repairs already posted, just have to scan through the channel. They have great tips and tricks for you. But from the sounds of it, your prep is good, just wipe with acetone or MEK afterwards, but also throw that can of HH66 in the garbage. It's not made for repairs on inflatable boats, even though lots of folks swear by it. You need a 2 part glue, either by Zodiac, Stabond or Weaver. Those are the highly recommended glues we sell and use here, but running short at the moment on some brands. Use those glues, and you should have no problem with a repair like that.

    Ive got a leaking valve on my right pontoon. The other pontoon is completely fine and i tried swapping the valves but I still have leaks on the right one, When swapping valves the left pontoon showed no leaks. Is the marine grease what I need or is my pontoon bladder ruined somehow? If so what grease did you use here? and does it make a difference? -thanks!

    I guess my follow up would be. How do I know if the basket is broken? it looooooks fine to me but I dont know what im looking for. would there be a big crack or something?

  • @gashopperinc
    @gashopperincАй бұрын

    We use generic marine grease. One in the video is 3M marine grease. Chances are the basket is broken or there is a stress crack on the fabric around the valve or just under it. To tell if the basket is broken, it won't tighten and will just continuously spin when trying to tighten. Stress cracks, you'll have to pull the valve out and bend around the valve hole and see if there is a cracking. One of my first boats I ever fixed had that problem where we changed the valve, and still leaked. Upon further inspection I noticed the fabric crack. And to repair had to make a donut patch so the valve sealed.

  • @Dino-11
    @Dino-11Ай бұрын

    @@gashopperinc thanks for the reply. When i tighten it it does get pretty tight but it never really stops, I could try tightening it more but Im afraid Ill over tighten it and break the basket if its not already broken. Is there a way to change the backet? or in that case is the pontoon bladder toast? In the other scenario, when you say fabric crack, my pontoon has a inner bladder and outer canvas. would this crack be on the outer fabric? or the bladder itself? (thank you so much for the help already! Your video was already so helpful, Im very afraid my pontoon is broken) *Update* There is a small tear around the basket housing, but when I spray the bladder with soapy water the bubbles seem to come from in the basket where the threads are. My thoughts is a donut patch would maybe work for ether issue, do you have a recommended product for that? The videos on the channel Im seeing are bigger tears with inner patches, do you have a video on smaller patches like what Im after?

  • @gashopperinc
    @gashopperincАй бұрын

    If the bladder is toast, then you would be filling both chambers from one valve. You'll know when it's tight cause there will be lots of tension. If the tension gets to a point where it all of sudden becomes loose, then the basket is shot. To change the basket, you can do 1 of 2 ways, cut the the valve opening and put a donut patch or find a area of the boat that isn't going to be visible and do a cut there.
