Cleaning and Installing The Floor - Zodiac Futura Mark 2C Restoration Rescue - PT.3

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

On this episode of INFLATED!!!
On this episode of INFLATED, I have a Zodiac Futura Mark 2C that has come into the shop for some major repairs. This boat is turning into a Restoration Rescue where the previous repair shop tried pouring epoxy into the transom to prevent it from rotting and falling. It did prevent it from doing that, but now the boat leaks water around those areas of the transom, while putting a hole in the tube from the sharp edges created after the epoxy cured. Now that the floor and transom are out, New transom can be installed. More cleaning and installing. Enjoy!!!

You shouldn't have to weigh down the Adhesives, as long as your using a 2 part glue. Zodiac or Stabond. If the temp are cooler, have a heat gun on hand to help the bonding process.

Does the heat gun soften the glue without damaging it? And do you use 320 for the sanding?

Fresh glue, yes. Old glue, no. We use 80 to 120 grit around here. Depends on the previous glue installation. If a fault repair tech lathered layers on, well use 80 grit. 120 is generally sufficient for factory glued areas.

Hi, I really appreciate your work, and efforts on sharing them. Just wondering if you ever repair Quicksilver (Mercury) pvc inflatables. I have a 15 year old (430cm hd) very rarely used one in good overall condition in Turkey and the attempts from local repairers to restore the floor failed. Just wondering if you would agree with some repairers here that these models are not worth the efforts to repair their floors due their build quality? Thanks so much in advance for your feedback

Thank you for watching!!! Yes, I have fixed all brands of inflatable boats. Including the Quicksilvers. I can kinda see what the other repairers are talking when it comes to the older Quicksilvers, but if the material is in great shape and like you said, has hardly been used, then the only main expense would be just the glue and labor if you have another shop do it. Or just the glue if you are doing it yourself. This boat here that's getting the repairs in this video series was on the cusp of just getting thrown in the garbage. But since the customer got hosed from the person he bought it from, I'm trying to keep the costs down for him on this restoration by trying to reuse as much as possible. In the end, the customer could've got a half decently used boat for what he is spending. But by him accepting these repairs, he won't have to worry for another 10 years as all the major areas that have failed have all been put back together or replaced.

Thank you so much for your kind and professional reply. That is encouraging especially hearing you have repaired Quicksilver boats before. I believe i finally found a capable store in Turkey willing to repair my boat. If i have not seen your videos and the state of the boats that you've put back into good use, i would have stopped searching for a solution on this, potentially giving up owning a boat..

Hi, thank you for your videos, they are super helpful. I am currently doing a floor repair on my little zodiac, the floor came off (seems like there were bad attempts at repairs in the past). Really struggling to get the glue off the floor and the tubes. Tried everything but it's extremely slow progress. Noticed you use a sander, I tried that and very quickly and easily put a hole in the floor, and on the tube it took the top layer of colour off and I barely touched it. Any advice? I'm literally at it with a scouring pad and finger nails at this point.

Best thing for removing old glue would be MEK, if MEK isn't available in your area, then you'll want to use acetone. You do have to be very careful when using any power equipment, especially sanders or grinders. As you have found out, you can sand through quickly. Just patch the area that's you went to far on, and wet the area where you want to remove the old glue from with MEK, and lightly go over with a sander on a low setting. Patience is key, with a little elbow grease and pressure. Just wipe and wet every couple minutes to get the old glue to be tacky.

@@gashopperinc thank you, I have tried MEK and found Acetone worked better but I will give it another go. Would you suggest a Random Oscillating Sander instead of Orbital? 120 Grit. Thank you for your help.

@chrisstanhope8592 120 grit for sure. We prefer the Orbital Sander. But for precision spots, we'll pull out the dremel with course grinding stone on low settings.
