VCQ

Hi, I'm VCQ. Welcome!

I've made this channel to just put myself out a bit more to the world really, and hopefully to grow and learn a bit more about myself in the process. Initially, I'll be playing a lot of games and looking at various strategies, discussing gameplay and trying some self-set challenges among other things.

Eventually, the aim (time permitting) is to chat or learn or discuss a bit about everything really: sports, plants, science, philosophy, the list goes on......

Any Q's or Queries, slap me an email.

    Such a dumb scenario. It should only apply to European nations. Native nations wouldn't have smelters. And the Ai don't fight you but only the mines. I lost once and was short of 400 metal but I was way ahead of everyone else and I didn't think of building mines far away as the Lakota can do. The only reason I do this scenario when I pick the Lakota is because I lost at it two times and I want to win it but I also like using the Lakota raiders ability to raid resources from buildings. 🙂

  • @luthavandross7390
    @luthavandross73902 ай бұрын

    Well this is awful. I hardly used any metal l; I built two towers to guard my mines. Once I had my first tower, I built my first mine. The enemies went straight for the mine and I defended it easily plus I researched attrition. However I accumulated more than 3000 metal and Lakota raiders ability to steal resources didn't apply, neither did any plunder bonuses from destroying enemy mines. 😡 No fun at all. Just an awful scenario.

  • @vcq8856
    @vcq88562 ай бұрын

    It's quite different from most scenarios, which can be good but also bad depending on how the scenario is made. It might have been better if you had to fight over metal merchants king of the hill style or have permanent mines that you capture or some other mechanic other than a gather resource race. That Lakota ability is nice and incentivises raiding but the long ranged cavalry are more for picking off citizens than damaging buildings, but it is nice though.

  • @vcq8856
    @vcq88562 ай бұрын

    @@luthavandross7390 That is correct. I tried market buy/sell tactics as well but in this scenario it ONLY counts metal gathered from mines and rare resources. Plunder, building bonuses, the market and civilisation bonuses do not apply. There's no explanation on which metal gathering methods will count towards the total or not. I think if this was added it would eliminate a bit of frustration but I'd also like to see how a different scenario would pan out with gathering the metal with merchants or permanent mines.

The March to Moscow, the Battle of Eylau and the Battle of Friedland are all up there as contenders for the toughest scenario of the Napoleon campaign. One foot wrong in any of them and you'll be staring at defeat.

  • @vcq8856
    @vcq88567 ай бұрын

    @@bencollis3421 This is a tough scenario! I have a few ideas: 1) Decoys from generals. They soak up a few hits and distract units. Very useful with additional fortress fire although very temporary. 2) Entrenching in front of or next to a fort. Entrenching will help keep troops alive for longer as they take less damage. You can then garrison a few archers or injured units in the fort while the entrenched units will act as bait. Eventually the army will die down and you can be aggressive on the catapults. You can also add the healthy units back into the entrenchment. Works even better when you use decoys on top of that. 3) Use light cavalry to rush/target catapults, leaving your main army out of combat while you build up numbers. This lets forts/towers soak up any army damage. 4) Keep the generals around your units. They provide a passive +2 to Armour and +4 to your Companions. 5) Garrison injured units from leftover battles in forts, cities and towers. 6) Build multiple towers and forts within range of each other. Having buildings fight will keep more units alive in the long run. 7) if you can, build near the river. Units crossing rivers move slower and take more damage. Having a well-positioned, fully garrisoned fort close to the river can decimate opposing armies. That said, this is all to hold the east side until you get your economy up and running. Then you can build 2-3x more barracks and stables so you can make more troops than you lose. I hope this helps!

Needless to say it was a hopeless endeavor. Loved the way you microed those Bomb Ketches to avoid cannon fire. Whether or not I can replicate your example remains to be seen. Wish me luck! • @vcq8856
    @vcq88569 ай бұрын

    Cheers! Yeah, there's two routes of three at the start of the campaign and then you get another 2 routes of 3 scenarios once you complete the first three. So you can avoid those scenarios and come back later once you've got more rare resources under your control. Yeah, landing prematurely on the island will grant an instant defeat, you need those troop numbers for the capital and the hordes of cavalry are too strong to engage. Best to let the ketches do the work and weaken everything first before assaulting the capital. Those bomb ketches are the MVP in this scenario. They pave the path to victory in this map. I have faith you'll get the job done! Keen to hear how you go! Assuming there's no naval force (there isn't as far as I know), then yeah you can get them in there to get some hits on the cannons. I would do that if my micro skills were better but it's also much harder at the capital when there are towers, forts, the city and cannons going raining hellfire from above. Ideally you use them as meatshields for the ketches to mop up any troublesome buildings or cannons.

    Wow! What an epic struggle. Even after losing your capital but you got it back and tracked down the last two Barracks strongholds with less than two minutes to spare. I've been playing this Campaign only on Tough at Slow speed but this scenario has been giving me fits. About half a dozen tries now with the same sad result. You seemed to at least partially follow the result of "subnormalizer" at Rise of Heaven Forums who played this around thirteen years ago on "Very Hard" [Tougher?] level. He said: 'Well, to get into Spain on Very Hard with the "Guerrilla Bases" scenario, the trick seems to be to take out the 3 closest sets of barracks, then to hold back and defend your expansion city until you have extra cannons and Light Inf. 12 inf and 5 cannons worked for me, but that may have been overkill. Also, if the goals say that there are barracks left and you think you've scouted the map, towers count as 'barracks' for the game goals, but not for spawning enemy units. I guess once you subtract the towers, there really are only 15 barracks, but you actually have a full half-hour to win this map, so take out the first three barrack/tower encampments, then build up. Don't bother with Heavy Inf, there's no enemy cav, and you might need the metal for siege.' I've tried building a Fort at my Capital (Marseilles) but lacking digital dexterity it's difficult to manage both the Metal-acquiring and building process before enemy infantry show up AND the striking force simultaneously. My little army gets strung out too much or sits idle too long, either getting bushwhacked by sudden concentrations of guerrilleros or wasting time while raiders show up at my capital in growing numbers. Maybe I should hang back until it's built but that risks getting boxed in as you nearly did. A real dilemma, n'est-ce pas?

  • @vcq8856
    @vcq88569 ай бұрын

    Losing the capital definitely put me into a state of defiance and I hated losing it so I was determined to get it back. It's honestly a tricky little scenario that will give many players a hard time. Oh really? I haven't browsed any forums, I'm kinda making it up as I go along and trying to figure what works is part of the fun. But it's kinda cool we come to the same/similar conclusion. Yep, you definitely need to raze those front three encampments ASAP and then defend. Again, I recommend building compactly as there's less space to defend and it's easier to protect those villagers. I kinda disagree with the idea of storing the metal for siege. You don't really need more than the 2 cannons you start off with and you'll want to add fusiliers to get numbers up in your army. Cannons don't fight well against infantry whereas the infantry can take down buildings (although a lot slower than cannons obviously). So i think keeping unit numbers up is better. They trade well with Tercios but obviously get smacked by highlanders and they'll do more damage to them compared to cannons. Just my reasoning anyway. I'd try building 2 towers instead of a fort in the early game. Cheaper, quicker to construct. Any spare resources can go into techs or army. Use decoys or entrench (preferred) if you're able to get into a solid position early enough. Keep the second city close and you should find some progress being made. But it's a tough scenario to get the balance right!

    to enter into combat mode: to initiate it yourself: left click on the big box in the lower center, or, press the 'A' key otherwise, you get seen/detected by a hostile (automatically/forcedly goes into combat mode) ---------- during combat mode: going into your inventory: costs 4 APs (but once in your inventory, you can do as many actions as you want) reloading: 2 APs (you can right click on the big box in the lower center, to get/toggle-cycle-through the different "attack types" for your weapon, which also includes the "reload" action too, or you can press the 'N' key to do the same thing, so long as you do have the correct ammo for your gun in your inventory, you can directly reload this way, wasting only 2 APs, without going into your inventory, which wastes 4 APs) (the left red button, switches/toggles between your two item/weapon slots, or you can press the 'B' key, to do the same thing) (you can press the 'SPACEBAR' key to end your combat turn, instead of pressing on the 'turn' in the small box on the right side of the UI on the bottom or using up all of your APs) (you can press the 'ENTER/RETURN' key, to end combat, instead of pressing 'combat' in the small box on the right side of the UI on the bottom, if you're able to end combat, of course) -------- attack types (and reload): ---------- melee weapons: (depends on the weapon) 1. swing 2. thrust 3. throw ------------ throwing weapons: (depends on the weapon) 1. throw 2. swing 3. thrust ----------------- firearm ("guns") weapons: (depends on the weapon) 1. single shot 2. aimed/targeted shot (this is the forerunner to the VATS system with the later fallouts, but you can NOT ever do this if you took the 'fast shot' trait) 3. burst shot 4. reload

    That's super helpful! It was fun trying to figure it all out though! Can you believe it took me about 2/3 of the way through my second play through to figure out reloading and switching between the different attacks each weapon had? XP It does kinda annoy me though how that stuff was never listed in a menu somewhere as a last resort.

    in the first vid, you also told Ian to stay (leaving him in shady sands) there's 4 companions/followers/party-members that you can get in fallout 1 and continue to have/use them for the rest of the game (if they don't get killed, lol): 1. Ian (shady sands) 2. Dogmeat (junktown) 3. Tycho (junktown) 4. Katja (boneyard/adytum) so, you can have all 4 of them as your companions, providing extra damage, being "meat shields", and infinite storage too, but that's all they provide, aside from a lot of hassle as well

  • @vcq8856
    @vcq885610 ай бұрын

    I wasn't keen on having a companion. Thought I'd get a better sense of the difficulty that way. The indefinite storage would have been the best thing, grabbing spare weapons and selling them would save plenty of time, as well as keeping the better weapons and ammo. Although going around exploring with all the companions would be cool, you'd get this little group going and combat would be more manageable, assuming you keep everyone alive of course (ha!)

    @@vcq8856 you can certainly do without companions too, the game can be done solo, as they really don't offer that much, and they die easily too (can't upgrade their armor, they got preset, AC = armor class, and life too, no leveling them up. In Fallout 2, they do level up, so they do get a bit better, unlike with fallout 1) some can find using/abusing them for storage to be cheating, bypassing dealing with your character's limiting carry weight all personal choice, the companions do/can help a bit, but they're also a hassle as well too at the very least, Ian does help with combat for at least the early to mid game, especially if you got a weak combat character ("diplomat/pacifist" build) or weak-starting combat character (such as low strength, being unable to use most weapons and/or if you only got tagged the late game weapons: energy-weapons/big-guns, and not one of the starting combats: unarmed/melee/small-guns

    In the second run I did (uploaded, but haven't scheduled it yet), I again went solo, mainly as they felt more like a hassle. Although dogmeat kept following me and I had zero idea how to get him to stop so I gave up. He lasted longer than I thought he would. Being able to have your allies leveling up would give me more of an incentive to try/use them. Also opens the idea of a pacificist run. I think there's really only one more run to do for me personally, a solo no death run and then I'd move on to Fallout 2. I could try different character playstyles or try companions, but I don't think I'd get as much depth/challenge out of the game than that.

    @@vcq8856 ya, fallout 1 is a lot more simple/limited in what skills and etc you need, so not much variety in builds (aside from challenging yourself, and of course just in trying the different combat options: small guns, unarmed, melee, big guns, energy weapons, throwing, and the subsequent perks for those builds, but some perks are quite universal, so, builds won't change the perk choices too much) ----------- you can't get rid of (make stay so he remains alive when you try to take on a place too dangerous for him) dogmeat, aside from using a door, as he can't open up doors ------------- skills (tagged at character creation) needed in fallout 1: 1. speech 2. main combat skill 3. secondary/backup/early-game/late-game combat skill or other skill (sneak, lockpick, outdoorsman, steal, doctor, or whatever else, but really most of these other skills have really no use at all, you really should pick a combat skill here for your third tagged skill) (small guns and melee: super sledge hammer, have no "ammo" issues, while energy weapons, big guns, unarmed: power fist, melee: ripper and cattle prod, and throwing, all have "ammo" issues, so it's good to have small guns or melee: super sledge hammer, as a backup, if not your main already, just in case, if you run into "ammo" issues with energy weapons, big guns, and/or throwing) (lockpick isn't that useful, as there's not that many locked things in fallout 1, and also you can open up everything that is locked with your base lockpick skill level/amount, and/or along with a lockpick tool, the ONLY thing you can't lockpick with base lockpick and with using a lockpick tool, is the doc morbid's locker in junktown) (tagging lockpick and raising it is ONLY for speedrunners or for those just want to rush and get power armor, in order to be able to lockpick yourself into the BoS place, without having to go clear to the glow) you can use books to boost up: (its better to not waste your tagging at character creation on these skills, due to the boosting from the books for them being adequate for whatever you want to do in the game: well, speaking for repair and science, anyways, unless you want to use small guns, and depending on you, and how you want to play, and how well you know the game) 1. small guns to 91% on all game difficulties (this is likely due to a simple programming mistake) 2. first aid to 121% on easiest game difficulty, 91% on hardest game difficulty 3. outdoorsman to 121% on easiest game difficulty, 91% on hardest game difficulty 4. repair to 121% on easiest game difficulty, 91% on hardest game difficulty 5. science to 121% on easiest game difficulty, 91% on hardest game difficulty this will allow you to handle all (or nearly all skill checks for these skills, well, for repair and science, as the others don't really have skill checks)

    unfortunately, when you choose to 'cancel' a perk, you lose out on getting a perk for that clvl (I don't think there's a way to re-open up the perk popup box, at least not that I know of, anyways) max clvl (character level): 21 // (in fallout 2, I think it's 99, but I could be wrong/mistaken, it's been awhile since I've played fallout 2, and haven't looked up stuff about it in awhile, too lazy) max perks (without the 'skilled' trait): 7 (at clvls: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21) max perks (with the 'skilled' trait): 5 (at clvls: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20) ------ max stat level: 10 max skill level: 200 // (in fallout 2, it's 300) ------ EDIT: err, looks like maybe the perk box does re-pop-up, when you open back up the character screen, very fortunate/lucky, lol (I didn't realize it would re-pop-up, so I always thought that if you cancel a perk, you lost out on getting that clvl perk forever, laughs) ------- if you play again... since you only get a max of 7 (or only 5, with the 'skilled' trait) perks, and since the max clvl is only 21, the 'swift learner' is a waste of a perk, as you're taking that perk, instead of a perk that would actually improve/boost/enhance you in some actual way really, the only truly good perk for clvl 3 is: toughness (some people take the 'awareness' perk for clvl 3, as it does let you see a target's life and bullets, and weapon used, but this isn't really a boost/improvement to your character, so it's really just a "convenience helper" especially for new/casual players to help them with their combat strategy) (also, the 'skilled' trait is really one of the worst traits, as it reduces you from a max of 7 perks to 5 perks, and you also get your perks at later/higher clvls too, and skill points are not an issue, so you don't need the extra skill points that it gives you)

    I went full blind and decided not to look at a wiki until after I'd finished a full run-through. But the info looks right to me and I'm not going to bother re-checking it, :P Yeah, for the skilled perk, I wasn't aware of the level cap (even though I didn't get to lvl 21 anyway), nor was expecting that levelling up would take longer than what it did. I was planning for a longer game. I was surprised at the number of unhelpful or bad perks. Many seemed to be a waste of space. Relatively happy with the perks I did get in the end. I'd play through once more, doing a no death run, and the perks I'd get would be dodger, AP less cost and toughness. (I think there another one but can't recall it off the top of my head)

    I'm not sure. The few times I managed to capture Moscow for longer than a minute, the AI seemed to throw all sorts of units at me. However, in that video, it did seem a little easier than the others I had experienced so not sure if it was the reinforcements from the neighbouring territories not getting to Moscow or if I just took more precautions with avoiding army losses or some other factor. I'd have to do another 2-3 runs at the scenario to confirm it.
