Slow your swing down, set your depth back from the roots and drive straight into it. When the chips become too much, back out and dozer them to the side, reset and keep drivng through the stump at the grade you set.

Planning to give this method a shot this weekend. Do you find it is faster than sweeping top to bottom?

I’m looking at a m285. How are you liking yours ? The one I’m looking at (on FB) I believe is a 16 hp. They are at $7500 firm. 17.2 length. Does that seem reasonable? Anything you can tell me about the ups and downs of the mill would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Terry. Central NY

Sorry for the delay. I think that price sounds reasonable for that one. I have the larger engine and it helps a lot with hardwoods. Not sure how the smaller engine would do. Downs are everything being manual, but for hobby milling it is great. Ups, it is simple and well built.

Nice machine. I have the diesel. Nice grinding. I typically will slow the swing speed just a little and I can take a bigger bite, as well as prolong the life of the bearings.

Thanks for the tips, I'll give it shot next time I'm grinding and see how it goes.
