Both speakers need work from stock form. There are response anomalies and colorations due to interference effects from overlapping responses of the tweeter and woofer. Move a few degrees and the sound changes. If crossed over the way they should the "ribbon" tweeter should play the treble and not overlap the same frequencies as the bass panels. Likewise the bass panels should be kept out of the treble zone. But on the LRS, Magneplanar has done the opposite... both drivers operate nearly full range with the attendant interference effects as you move even a few degrees around the speaker.

Hi DrDE, thanks for kindly sharing your pride and joy. I am new to this hobby although not new to music listening, got a pair of magnepan lrs based on the recommendation of Mr Gutenberg. I was just completely shocked by how good it sounds. I am still using my old onkyo home theatre AVR Tx 1007, which sounds good to me but I am planning to order an used SIT3, it’s not cheap and I am just curious based on your experience, is there an totally audible apparent difference between sit3 and other amp? Thanks a lot.

I am with you regarding the rather clinical / sterile sound of some of the current design tube amps. With that said, the orginal Stereo 70 driver board considerably limits bass definition and overall dynamics. Replacing the original 7199 with an adapted 6U8 or 6GH8a I find further degrades the sound. Upgrading this board to either the Triode Electronics or VTA driver board eliminates these issues and makes the amp an impressive performer. This is my experience as a long time hobby builder / restorer who has owned or built around 10-15 ST70, MkIV & MKIII amps.

This is great to find out about the amp and the rectifier units! I use a custom 6SN7 line stage (has XLR and RCA outs) and at current have solid state Nord Hypex based monoblocks (700w @4Ohms) I use with my Magnepan 3.7i's. I just reached out to Space Tech for the 300B amp. The rest of my system is tubes, phono stage (Hagerman Trumpet MC), and DAC (Lab 12 Reference). I always wanted to try tubes on my power amps but the power factor was never there unless it was these huge behemoths. With the preamp, do you ever hear the noise using the selector switch thru the speakers at all? Ever hear any noise if you tap the chassis thru the speakers? Thanks so much.

Thanks for sharing your system. It's amazing! For the first song I personally liked the Heresy best, with the forte right behind. I felt like some of those electric sounds didn't perform well with the open baffles especially during the sounds that were like rips of cloth towards the end. However for the second song the open baffles were killing it. Would have loved to have heard the Heresy's for it.

Too much room involvement in the OBs bass (duh!), otherwise nice enough. Heresies had the best "air", Fortes (about 40 years old!) the deepest and tautest bass. Reinforces to me that vintage Fortes like mine could shine with some active DSP multiamping and some deft EQ tweaks. I'd put a more modern mid horn lens on them too if there was room for such.

  • @naturalverities

You are right on about Forte 1 bass. I was once bragging about mine to a friend who lives 2k miles away. Well, he came for a visit and handed me a subwoofer obstacle course CD and said, "Prove it!" I immediately began prevaricating about how these are full range, not subs, etc. Then we began to play the CD and instantly our eyes got big and our jaws dropped to the floor. When Julian Hirsch reviewed the F1s back in the '80s he stated that they had lower bass distortion by an order of magnitude than anything they had ever tested. Still not sure how they accomplish that with rather ordinary looking 12" woofers. And yet... my actively multiamped DIY system in my man-loft sounds significantly better than my Fortes in tonality and soundstaging; I think its coherence would blow you away! If I ever get around to actively multiamping my Fortes I'll have to post a video about the result, as I've never heard of anyone doing it. They're probably too busy enjoying the music.😁

I have only owned the .7s, but I suspect that the point I want to make applies to all Magnepans. I tried the .7s with a Schiit Freya Plus (which has a lot of gain for a pre) and Vidar 1. The bass was anemic and unsatisfying. I inserted a cheapish (under $700) Buckeye Hypex amp (500w). The difference was astonishing. In my medium sized room, the .7s had enough bass that I completely abandoned the idea of adding a sub. The only complaint I had, which may be DAC related (Schiit bifrost 2/64) was that there was a significant deficiency in the highs. It was really weird... everything else was outstanding and the mids and separation was better than I've ever heard. The high frequencies in the percussion were lacking and I never tried a different DAC. It was a very non fatiguing sound which some people may prefer, especially for harsher recordings like some classic rock that can sound thin and bright. Still, for well recorded music, I was missing those highs. If that issue was DAC related, then the Hypex/Purifi amps (450 + watts) are my first recommendation to anyone with Maggies... before you spend a bunch of money on subs and active crossovers. I wonder if the Purifi amp would have solved the issue with the highs... I also wonder if the newer Hypex amps with higher current might sound even better. Given that Magnepan stresses the importance of current, that is likely to be the case.

Room size, shape, flooring, solid/hollow walls/ceilings and items/furniture, all make a difference in sound quality. Remember that everyone has a different hearing range, hence the like or dislike for speaker sound quality. Currently, I've read that Magnapan has another company experimenting with extermal subwoofers, crossover units, for the line of speakers. So far incredible results, but at a much higher price of course.

I believe that the Vidar may have more trouble driving the 1.7i than the LRS+. Sounds like you are hearing some amp strain. I use Schiir Tyr monoblocks with my 1.7i and definitely no edginess or harshness. Sounds amazing with Tyrs. But granted, I do not have LRS+ to compare. I have compared the original LRS and 1.7i are just as smooth though less rolled off in highs.

I need to listen to the LRS and 0.7 to find out if the magical sound is there, as you say :) My previous MG12 and 1.6 sure did not sound hollow. Cheers!

The Forte 1's were my first high end speaker that I bought about 2 years ago, in superb condition. I paired them with the GetDynaco PAS3 and ST-35 based on Dr D's review and I think its one of the best audio purchases I have made. Recently I resealed the cabinets, lined the interior walls with no res foam and also lined the horns with a layer of adhesive dampening material. I removed the stock crossovers and put quality speaker connectors in place and then installed the Crites gold crossovers on the internal angled cross brace. They just sound spectacular, the bass and overall sound is much tighter (not "boomy") and the midrange and soundstage is magnificent. I am currently trying the Crites replacement tweeters but would have to AB them in separate speakers with the stock ones to be able to comment on the difference. As they are, they sound smooth and effortless; one of my reference tracks is by Billie Eilish and her voice and high level of production are such a treat with these speakers. They are never fatiguing. I plan to put remove the stock bases and place them on slightly angled stands to open up the vertical listening axis. One of the things which is amazing is how much fidelity is transmitted around corners and throughout my open floorplan listening area, they still sound remarkably good even well outside the listening sweet spot. Other speakers are MUCH more localized to their preferred performance "zone". Only other upcoming improvement is to experiment with some ALK crossovers that I am building from scratch since they are no longer sold. This Dynaco Klipsch pairing is my "forever" vintage design!

To my ears the 1.7i was substantially better sounding to the LRS. You pay three times the price and I promise you get your money's worth. Get the 1.7i. Even in a smaller room they sound great. Put them in too big of a room and they get lost. A typical sized living room is perfect. You will get depth and width. I would suggest a 400 watt amplifier per channel for a larger room. The amp requirement is a bit over blown in my opinion.
