#3 = agree. there are too many board games coming out every day. But it's absolutely not true that less people are backing. Rather, it's people are backing less and less (myself included). You can see this often in crowdfunding bg projects reaching 100k to a milliion. So there's still a lot of money available. Just not by people who already backed.
Overwhelming for newbies.
good to see those ancient games getting some love here.
They are still good games that I will keep in my collection and then hopefully the little humans will love them as much.
waterdeep to me is to worker placement what dominion is to deck building... a great example of its basic mechanism without being complicated... nice video Jay Stay Hexy!
Awesome video and list! 👏😺 Would love to play Stay Cool!
Thank you
It was so great to chat to you, thanks again for the invitation
Thank you. Hope you enjoyed it.
fun list. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Agree with your list except for your #1. SI is one of my all time favorites. So weird we align so much everywhere else.
Each to our own. I understand why it’s popular, it just isn’t for me.
Haha most of those are on my top 20 of all time. I love simple games.
lol 😂 sorry if that video disappointed you
Drink everytime you hear "I just don't like it" ...
Haha hope it’s water
I think it depends on who you play the game with. In general, I hate playing Mysterium but with the right group of people it can be quite fun. Spirit Island can be punishing if not all players are at the same experience level, especially if you suffer from analysis paralysis then the game can drag on infinitely.
Yes playing with someone fun makes a difference. The people around the table can make or break a gaming experience.
100% agree w/ Spirit Island. I disliked it, tried it more than once and neither experience made me ever need to revisit that game again.
I found it so boring, and barely did anything exciting. Felt more solitaire.
So let me get this straight. You really didn't like these games.
Nope
02:27 - Number 10 FI 03:44 - Number 9 Splendor 04:42 - Number 8 Bios Origins 06:30 - Number 7 The Crew 07:22 - Number 6 7W 08:14 - Number 5 PR 09.26 - Number 4 TTR 10:26 - Number 3 Catan 12:00 - Number 2 Carc 12:48 - Number 1 Spirit Island 14:16 - End & Outro Really unnecessary to hide the titles. But your overall criticizm is literally "don't like it, just don't like it, it's boring" with a "flat, uninspiring" to spice things up. there's nothing there how you would improve the mechanisms, just a simple brush off. Aside from #10 and #1 all are point-scoring games. Perhaps that's what you dislike. Your (one and only) analysis (SI) I totally agree with. Tastes differ of course but Splendor is tense, speculative, Carcassonne is not about laying tiles but forging alliances, Puerto Rico if you play well you will feel this emergent flow. You didn't experience it, which is also okay. It's good to have these rants. The overall positivity of youtube influencers makes me sick, especially because games based on those reviews turn out to be big lies. Just don't like them 🙂
Future content will have names. I always improve the channel with little improvements over the coming months. I am always open to suggestions.
I agree with some of the other comments saying that this video does not offer much to the viewer. If as you state in some of your replies, all this is subjective, then what is the value in your opinions and what are you contributing to discussions in the board game space?
The reviews outline what the games about which provides value. The opinions are limited to avoid frustrating people.
Forbidden Island has a fun iPad app. It works better as a quick little solo game.
Not a fan of using apps mate.
@@boardgamebonkers You never play games on your phone or computer? Or just not digital board games? Many board games have great digital adaptations. Just recently played a lot of Raiders of the North Sea on Steam. Playing Gloomhaven on Steam with my brother, who lives in another city, is one of my favorite gaming experiences. You're missing out.
Repeatedly, both at the start of the video and the end, you tried to add a disclaimer that you don’t think these are bad games, and that a lot of people might like them, but they’re games that you just don’t like. That’s fine, everyone has different preferences and opinions. But you then turn around and constantly (including in the video title) refer to them as “overhyped,” which is inherently saying that you think other people are wrong for liking them as much as they do. You can’t have it both ways. You don’t get to play the “It’s just my opinion” card while simultaneously claiming that other people’s opinions are wrong. Also, I feel like this list needs a lot more research and detail. It doesn’t provide me as a viewer any value for me when you say, “I didn’t like Splendor. I thought it was really bad. I played it like 10 years ago and don’t even remember what the gameplay is like, but I didn’t enjoy it.” Almost every single entry in your list was you saying repeatedly, “It was boring, I don’t like it.” Tell us *why* it’s boring, in detail! What specific mechanic? What about that specific implementation of that specific mechanic led to a game state or social interaction that was boring? I don’t disagree with you on some of these games, but I do dislike the way you present your opinions in the video. And see? I gave you a couple specific, hopefully helpful, reasons, instead of just saying, “I dislike this.”
There are plenty other content creators out there if you don’t like my videos. We all have different ways of presenting. I don’t pretend or hide behind the camera and will be upfront and honest. Thank you for your feedback and suggestions.
@@boardgamebonkers I tend to be bad at judging how my tone will come across when written out, so I apologize if my comment seemed accusatory or terse or something. I'm keenly aware of how much effort goes into creating a video, and how personal it feels to create something and put it out there. My intention is not to attack you or discourage you, but to provide actual feedback I didn't dislike the video, in fact I'm fascinated by most of the games you listed here. I almost never comment on KZread and wouldn't waste my time if I just disliked the video. But as I said, I disliked **the way you presented your opinions** in the video, because I didn't feel like I came away with any insight into why you feel that way about them. As for the first part of my comment, there's nothing wrong with having a video about why certain games are overrated or overhyped (even the Dice Tower puts out those regularly). It's just a very different kind of approach-which invites a very different kind of debate-compared to sharing your own opinions on liking/disliking different games, and it felt like you're straddling the two because you want to be able to use that "it's just my opinion" escape hatch to avoid people telling you you're wrong. I think it would help to pick a lane, whichever one it is, and own it.
Dungeon crawlers are way better than all these boring games.
I am just starting to test some. Looking forward to it.
It would be more helpful for us, your viewers if you explained more why you dislike the game rather than repeating that you hate it or it's boring.. saying what you would recommend for players to play instead of that game would be a better content..
Thanks for the feedback. Certainly will go into more explaining.
Wow, I can't believe how similar our opinions are: Splendor; 7 Wonders; Puerto Rico; Carcassonne and Spirit Island would all make my Top 10 too. Forbidden Island might as well, it's another one I sold on (though I do quite like Forbidden Desert). I even agree that 7 Wonders Duel is a great game and that 7 Wonders is fine at best, which other people find strange. I also agree that Catan only works when negotiation is a big part of the game. I don't understand people who play often but never trade. The only ones I'd disagree with are Ticket to Ride, which is admittedly simple, but I still enjoy it, and The Crew. I didn't understand your comments about knowing/remembering what cards your teammate/s had. Once you go past the first few missions, there's no way that you can reveal enough information to one another to 'know for sure' everything that you need to. Did you play some of the later missions?
We played mostly competitive as that’s an option. It plays awful with limited players. I had to reread the rules as I was sure there was something wrong we were doing. However, the game just wasn’t for us.
@boardgamebonkers You played The Crew competitively??? Why!?? No wonder you didn't enjoy it, haha. Rating The Crew based on its competitive variant is like rating a TV set based on its effectiveness as a mirror! Almost all other trick-taking games (and there are a myriad) are designed to be competitive. The Crew's USP, and what makes it fun, is the limited communication co-operation.
@@danieltownley7436 trick taking games just aren’t for us mate.
@boardgamebonkers No issues with that. I don't mind if you don't enjoy trick-taking games, I'm not trying to persuade you to play them. I'm just saying that the Crew is fundamentally a co-operative game, so I'm not surprised it was awful as a competitive game.
I...disagree with so much here...and...I cannot tell what you DO like from this because you were all over the place! And often ask games to be something they never were intended to be...not abhreat first video to watch
Also..."I don't like thos style of game...so I rank this game low"...don't comment on it if you cannot give this a fair ahake!
@@j.r.cilliangreen4083honestly, agreed. I'm sure he has. A lot of nuanced reasons for his takes. We just hear so few of them.
Well, if you keep watching other videos you will get a good idea of what I like and think are good games :)
I looked the whole video and I can understand what you say. Just the fiddlyness part on spirit island strikes me as odd. It follows a sequency order like brass or terraforming mars or dune imperium or even war of the ring. I think that one is someting. You should try solo, just to get a hang of it. But otherwise fine video, just try to lose the, "i think its boring" line; a why or context is much more intresting to listen to.
not only that, it's just so ugly it hurts the eyes.
I really don’t like solo. I have lord of the rings so will see how that plays when I get it to the table.
For me according to bgg rating where I looked for top rated games 1. Through the Ages 2. Food Chain Magnate or Splotter in general 3. The Quacks of Quedlingburg 4. Race to the Galaxy 5. The Quest for El Dorado 6. Pandemic series 7. Champions of Midgard 8. PARKS 9. Ticket to Ride series 10. Magic: The Gathering or TCGs in general 11. That’s so Clever 12. Xia or any sandbox games in general (such as merchants & marauders and western legends) 13. Descent 2E 14. Command & Colours or most war games in general 15. Captain Sonar 16. Carcassonne 17. Secret H*tler or most social deduction in general 18. KLASK or most dexterity games in general 19. Hanamikoji 20. Jamaica
That’s some list
"I just didn't like it.... I really really dislike this game"......You just went through 75% of my entire collection. I have 8/10. Some ae overhyped for sure but think they are all fun with the right table.
It’s all subject and we will have our own thoughts and feelings on what we do and don’t like.
Ark Nova, jack of all trades, master of none.
Wasn’t a fan myself and agree with that.
No.1 overhyped game for me would be Wingspan. What a boring game.
Let’s see what the other one Wyrmspan is like.
I understand. Really disliked spirit island too😅
Aye, it’s certainly far too boring and uni treating with a solitaire feel to it.
Maybe you can be a little more condescending in your next video Also, you can play a game that you review befóre making the video, instead of drawing that conclusion as you burn it to the ground ín the video (Splendor) This is just poor reviewing (sorry)
I have played them all. I don’t like them. It’s all subjective. I have a smaller version of Splendor that my partner likes, so we play that together but I’m not a fan of it and is way overhyped.
Wow, for once a list that I have actually played most of the games! In fact, I own and play most of them all the time- with my young pre-teen and teen nieces and nephews. They are exactly as you describe- fairly basic games that don't have a very deep strategy. While I enjoy the theming of Forbidden Island, there is rarely a real choice- there is always an optimal route. Kids enjoy it because it takes a lot of thinking to figure out what to do. But the kids 15+ all easily see the optimal choice and pass on the game. Splendor broke almost immediately because the kids would hoard the gems- by game 3 nobody could play because everyone saw that starving other players of choice was the best move. Carcasonne is the only game I'll disagree with you on. Not that I find it especially engrossing, but it plays a lot like a game of dominoes. I play it with my parents and we get a good relaxing 20 minute chat while having fun exploring the French countryside. Great video! I'll definitely watch more.
Thanks for this
One other thing about Ticket To Ride. If it's too easy/boring, then just require the top players like yourself to always take all of the route cards you draw during the game and you have to draw route cards upon completing all routes. Those who already find the game interesting as it is can follow the regular game rules. There, now it's an actual challenge for you because you'll either lose due to biting off more than you can chew, lose due to bad starting route selection, and/or lose due to not having enough points from not risking drawing more cards. Winning will be super rare and sweet as honey. I prefer a much more casual game over something hardcore like this.
I’m enjoying casual games myself a lot.
I was tracking along with you until Ticket To Ride. Ticket To Ride offers plenty of fun with the right people. Always play with the house rule of not intentionally cutting people off. It's fairly relaxed and there's enough strategy to make it interesting. Knowing when to start laying down trains is quite important to successfully complete routes. Knowing which routes are able to be completed before the end of the game will drive a strategy as well. I own a copy of Catan but almost never play it. Again, you've got to have the right group of people to play Catan and one of those people in the group needs to be a total hothead who can't take a joke.
I know TTR provides a good family experience, it was just too dull for me to enjoy it.
Great video! Always love to hear people's opinions on games. I was with you on just about every game until you hit #1. That one hurt XD
Hopefully another top10, #1 will hit you better next time :)
Im going to say board games are not for you. find another hobby
Thanks schizophrenic 🧠
@boardgamebonkers lol. OK boomer
Splendor was ruined for me when I played Gizmos, which has all the same mechanics as Splendor but you can supercharge your turns with these dopamine-inducing action combos! I don’t understand the hype for The Crew either. I also think it’s boring and too easy (unless other players don’t get it, in which case the game makes them feel stupid). Sometimes you get a certain configuration of cards that makes the goal impossible, too. I don’t see the appeal of Carcassonne either. Draw a tile, place a tile, maybe add a meeple if you’re lucky. Where does the fun come in? I played it once with people for whom Carcassonne was the only game they played. They had all the expansions and they had the tile distribution memorised, so I didn’t have a chance. In a similar vein, I also think Cascadia is extremely boring. I don’t hate Catan or Ticket To Ride as much as a lot of bobby gamers do. I don’t play them often because I’m not in that stage anymore, but I don’t think they’re bad games for new gamers. One hugely hyped game I dislike is Root. I’ve played twice, as two different factions, with two different player counts, and won both times. And I hated it. It seemed like Woodland Creatures Risk, but instead of making it easy, let’s make sure no one except the teacher of the game has any clue what’s going on because everyone is doing something different. It’s also too confrontational for my taste. Hard pass. 😄
I've played The Crew. It's a very dull game. I don't get the purpose of the trick taking aspect of the game. Trick taking is not how I naturally think about things, so The Crew is less than a pleasant experience for me. However, I'll play just about any game with other people - it's about friends, family, community - it's not whether or not I like a game. So whatever people want to play I'm basically down for. I might roll my eyes knowing there are better games, but a board game is a board game. Any game becomes fun once someone does something hilarious that becomes the topic of discussion for months or years to come.
I have no interest in Root either.
Why not include game names in description?
I could do, but takes more time. Plus some people may skip the video all together. Maybe something I’ll consider in the future. I’m always open for improvements.
Always nice to find new Board Game channels. One small tip: You repeat things often twice or even three times. It’s not necessary. The point get’s across without saying the same thing again with slightly different wording.
Thanks for the feedback. I am quite relaxed stating things. Will certainly reflect on videos and picked that up myself. Hopefully you can see a natural flow.
Agree with most of the cons list , walked about Friday and couldn't get anyone to play with , was unaware of the online option , did not find this till the Saturday
Next time I will put up a pre video to invite players to join me.
Sorry for the comments, nice to hear about the new games you experienced

Id prob suggest to go to asmodee zone for kids plus we demoed a family weight game at ravensburg. They also had free light sabre lessons for kids, which my boys enjoyed. So definitely check out what is happening at the expo before you go.
The issue is no instructions at the event. No sign to state what you do which is the issue. They assumed everyone knew.
We went friday as a family of 4....two boys 11 and 9 our second year at the expo and we love it
Did the kids enjoy it and have enough to do?
They did have maps/programme at front of Q before you picked up tickets
There weren’t any at the door. Apparently by Friday morning they were all gone.
We picked ours up about 9am Friday, so maybe ran out afterwards
@@jediquigley2192 Aye. They need to ensure there’s plenty at the front door.
Tiny Epic games are quite good, overall. The gameplay and small footprint make them well worth the low price.
They are great for taking on holiday as well.

Actually my least favourite. I think other Civ games have a better theme, but it’s a good game and plays much quicker.
Great video. Lords of waterdeep has never really cought my interested. How would it compare to Architects of the west kingdom. Thats another one I have had my eye on but never pulled the trigger.
It’s much easier to get to the table. The worker placement is simplified. The expansion improve the game slightly and you can swap out some of the intrigue cards, quest cards and building tiles with better ones. The only disappointment are the cubes instead of meeples, however you can upgrade these on Etsy. Architects had an interesting worker placement and more In depth choices, however I disliked the prison aspect of getting your workers taken away and the use of the cathedral meant mathematically it wasn’t worth placing your meeples in it.
Brothers Murph shill it and every restoration games game which made me avoid it at all cost.
