I remember an interview with Siouxsie where she talked about shoegaze. She said if the musicians have to look at their instruments to play them they should practice at home instead of on stage. Catty? Yes. Did I make an effort to avoid staring at my fretboard on stage? Yes.

They are absolutely one of my most beloved bands, such a big place in my heart for them. I was fortunate enough to see them live at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco and lovely Mazzy Star opened up for them (early to mid 90s, I believe). Wonderful documentary about one of the best bands ever!

Nice timeline but, if the father of Shoegaze is in here (Jesus and Mary Chain) the mother (Cocteau Twins) must be present to.

Some people say it’s a tragedy that 27 babies drown to death during the making of the “Nevermind” album cover. I mean, some might say it’s a ‘tragedy,’ but I say that’s an ignorant point of view, because they died in the name of art, and I think that’s very beautiful!

Great video! Loved the EP's Ride, Play, Fall and then Nowhere. I was VERY disappointed with Going Blank Again. Funny you mention OX4, because it was only this year after seeing the video of them at Rough Trade that I really enjoyed the song. I picked them up again when Weather Diaries came out and still love that album. Interplay is on constant rotation right now.

There are also some songs from the 80's that kind of gave their style queues to shoegaze. Not because they were wall of sound, but because they had the whammy effect you often see, and the etherealness - voices carry by til tuesday and don't you forget about me by simple minds are some examples. i think the stone roses could also classify on their first album.

my dad was the drummer in ultracherry violet! he had come from the DC hardcore scene and had played with some of the first ever emo bands (rites of spring, embrace...) back in the 80's! he also played in sweredriver briefly before ultracherry violet. the reason ultracherry violet only released one album was because the band was extremely disappointed by the lack of attention they were getting. everyone was pretty much ready to quit after a huge falling out they had at a show in DC. "at the end, we blew up in fine fashion. that final night at black cat, i was ready to call it quits (as a drummer). but after a 10-month cooling off, we were asked do a cd. with no rehearsals, we went to a warehouse in baltimore & recorded it all live in 1 day. my hands had become so unaccustomed to playing, that blisters formed, popped and were bleeding by the time we'd done 5 songs. tho we never played again, i'm quite fond of this. missing song n all. oh, and i never quite quit the drums."
