One of my gifts from God is: He gave me good troubleshooting skills. I am able to fix things and find solutions to problems and issues that I face. I post videos here to help others. I don't do fancy editing. Most of my videos are very basic. I just want to get the information posted, so others can see it, with the hope that it helps you too.

    The problem with mulch is when you trim hedges, you have to hand pick your cuttings or leave them to decompose. Same problem exists with light weight stone. You can blow or vac them. So I went with a heavier stone. Now I can blow the cuttings into a pile without disturbing my stones.

    Hello. I'm with you! I spread 4 old bed sheets on the ground all the way around a plant first. That catches a lot of the clippings. I carefully fold the sheets inward, dump the clippings in my trailer, and then put the sheets down around the next plant. Thank you for leaving a comment. After 6 years we have a sea of weeds. Fabric degrades after a couple years, and if it didn't, new dirt blows in every year, and eventually you'll have 3 inches of dirt on top of your fabric. I simply don't believe you.

    Hello. Most of what you said is correct. But your last sentence is not. But it is still definitely worth doing. I want to keep any information on here accurate for others that read it. I did this same thing at our last house 20 years ago. I did all the little details that I mention in this video. We left that house 3 years ago. During the entire 17 years we lived there, with these rocks in place, not a single weed came from the soil underneath the fabric, and through the fabric. Not one. Did a very few weed seeds blow into that area from somewhere else and try to grow? Yes. But because they started to grow in rocks, that had no soil, so the roots never had soil to bury into, they were very easy to simply hand pull out and toss away. Rick

  • @TheFrankyfern22
    @TheFrankyfern222 күн бұрын

    @@user-hm5zb1qn6g There is nothing for the seeds to take root in. Dirt>weed guard/fabric/river rock. Nada. And even if a few made their way they’d be easy enough to pull. I douse the weeds with salt and vinegar and bye bye.

  • @rickstid-bits

    Hello. I don't have any experience with that. Some other people have made that comment also. My thoughts: Cardboard would block all rain and water from passing through it. If there are any plants in the bed . . . they need water. Cardboard would also block the soil below from getting any air and breathing. Landscape fabric does all that. Looks nice. You do lose the benefits of mulch for plants but still, easy maintenance. Only thing I would say is the rock is a bit dull sorta like faded mulch. I would prefer a more colorful rock if there is one (NOT LAVA ROCK). Also if you ever wanted to plant something else it would be a nightmare.

    I live in NE Florida. I did my whole front yard in 2-4" river rock about 12 years ago. No grass. I do have many plants around the yard. But, the rock gets hot as hell (not kidding) and weeds do grow in it and attach to the weed fabric quickly. Everyday when I get the mail, I walk the front yard weed and pick up whatever. The yard always looks nice, especially in the winter. But I have to be careful about what I plant. Any plant with flowers or ones that drops seeds needs to be cleaned up or vacuumed. I stay away from them. I have a few beds with concrete border blocks with a large shrub and mulch. I do have a large Chinese Fan Palm that drops a million of olive sized seeds. I can no longer keep up with that. I used to cut the large stalks with the seeds but can no longer reach them with a pole saw. I will have to sort through all the stones around the tree and move the stones back past the tree drip line. Right now I'm in the process of moving stones to make a large bed near the street and driveway which will be mulched and will have many shrubs and flowers. Also using a blower does not remove all the weed seeds that come in from the air. Blowing forces many of them down between the stones. After all of this - I'd still take the stones over all mulched beds and grass! It seems a lot of work, but only once in a while. It's rewarding to go out for the mail when it is 97* and my friend across the street is dying mowing his grass. I do the 5 minute walk around the yard, pick a few weeds and yell over to him "Scott, I'm done"!

And he did an experiment and said if you dig down 4 to 5 inches and put river rock on top of it instead of 2 to 3 inches you will never need to put down any fabric and weeks will not grow back. He did another experiment with 2 inches and a few weeds started growing back so he said if you do at least 4 inches you won't have a problem what are your thoughts on that?

    Perfect! Cut up a blue plastic recycle bag.. I started hanging strips around the trees, shrubs all around the property as they were increasing at a mad rate and super territorial. Their constant staccato screech nearly drove me mad. As if an Invisible wall pushed them back they withdrew immediately. They still have some nests high up in some trees but they make a detour to stay well away from my property. It is remarkable how well it works. Thanks for passing on the info. 🧐😁

    What area of the nation are you? Some birds ,cardinals are not in my area, do you have any other ideas other than blue bags especially for robins?

    Hi Kathleen. I am near Richmond, VA. We have a lot of Robins nests on my property. This keeps them out of my door wreaths and the light fixture in my lean-to. Thank you for leaving a comment. Rick thank you! I had my unit for 3 years and the handle finally broke for the 3rd time today. I managed to fix it with the baking soda and superglue hack and the handle seems stable and strong. I disassembled and greased the value. It seems better than new.!

    Hi David. You’re welcome. What is your superglue hack? I've never had success using superglue for anything. Thank you for leaving a comment. Thanks Rick. Mixing baking soda with super glue can create a stronger bond that cures faster. The bicarbonate molecules in baking soda react with the cyanoacrylate to create a reactive ion that bonds more easily with other cyanoacrylate molecules. Great for repairing cracked plastic abd hardening super glue into a plastic form.

    Rick, thanks so much that was super useful. I’ve never been too sure about how to open those Diet Coke containers. I’m currently working on opening an eight pack of Lacroix, but I have no idea where to start. The handle looks suspiciously like some sort of opening but I don’t know.
