I pass the Hopetoun almost every day wishing someone would do a renovation, soundproof the band room and reopen it. Seeing X play there many times was a highlight. Sadly, it stands today derelict.
I worked Surfers Paradise clubs, this brings back some memories 😊
My favourite Venue
Hi. Spent a lot of time at the old Bombay. Walked from home in Fawkner to Brunwick at least twice a week for many years. I know I watched both Cold Chisel and Aussie Crawl there . I feel like it was the same night but I must admit there was a lot of mind altering substances involved. Anyway thanks for a great vid and bringing back some wonderful memories.
I got a copy of the album I was there on the day of the sale
Absolutely the best pub in Sydney 😊 was
My last resort late in the night to score some pot back in the day...😊
The Phoenician was a Maltese social club as well...

I'm 68 and live across the road from the Family. I was going there to see all the great bands for many years. The queue to get in , used to stretch right up Pine st. Funny enough, I still go over for a drink, or the odd Saturday afternoon, they have live music ( 1 guy with electronic setup )in the beer garden out the back . You name a band, chances are they played there. Talking about drunks, I became involved in a massive brawl there one night ( not my fault ). Some clown king hit me, I chased him across the road, and hit him back a few times. He hit me again, so I returned the pleasure. Just at that moment, I heard a hissing sound, thinking it was that guy, I swung back at him and subsequently heard a big scream. Long story short, I had hit a female sergeant Police Officer who had just pepper sprayed me. Well, after apologies and explanations, I was free to go. But hey ! That was the scene most nights, I just never thought I'd ever get caught up in it. But yes, it certainly was a great venue for bands in its day. And it's still good for a quiet drink and meal today. 😊
@aussiep5112 hahaha what a story. I think it's not a bad thing these days to not have 500 live music venues...other things in life can be just as much fun
@Gioia67 Thanks , I totally agree. Those days will never be repeated. One of my fondest memories from the Family was Stuart ( Singer in D-.Minnor) was performing his song Bat Man. He would venture out into the audience running around being Bat Man. So this night, he goes absolutely crazy and does a full-on leap right across a table of 4 females. It was so funny, drinks went in all directions, and all girls just screamed.
😂😂😂
Think everyone watching this remember’s a great time at sweethearts, oh to be young again! I’m looking at now with a cheeky smile..
Yeh it does bring a smile indeed...feels like a lifetime ago
Love what you do. More Melbourne please!!! _Reach out if you need support on any level._ _Never hurts to ask._
Thank you. I'll probably be in Melbourne in January so will reach out Cheers 👍👍👍
@@Gioia67 - I look forward to it. I’ll be working my way through your catalogue in the interim.
@@FromThe3021 there's a couple from the start that I'll redo eg Stage door Tavern Governors Pleasure ...I got the location wrong as I couldn't find it plus they need more stories. 😆
My fading memory suggests those steps you approached early in vid was the entrance to where stage area was? To be honest, only attended one gig there. Don’t even recall which decade that was, 70s, or 80s?Memorable bill though, Radio Birdman with The Church, Birdman ended ‘78, so must have been before then?
@PFay that's my memory too actually...wow how cool seeing those bands there Lucky you ✌️
Ah the memories, getting my drink spiked, seeing bands, working for shit pay, seeing drugged up guys getting teased and i dont even have the good stories. It’s a never stopping always changing place.
Another great live music place in Sydney was ST George sailing club they hosted heaps of Aussie bands grin spoon played there plenty of times the police used to set up breath tests on taren point bridge and stop every one leaving we used to go by boat at least 15 boats they where the best times
Yes I liked that place . I'll def do that one too Cheers 👏👏
Saw plenty of bands there. How about talk about the Vulcan hotel in Ultimo....
I saw goanna ,Sharon O’Neill , and the divinyls plus a few more I can’t remember a great venue but the drinks were pricey 😮
Fantastic bands ✌️✌️✌️
I have many stories about The Lifsaver but I could not repeat them lol baci x
haha haha 😄
So many mistakes in this video. TEK was NOT in the RATS was one.
@@dailybackup8372 I didn't say he was ?
@@Gioia67 You literally said, "The Rats, who was Denis and Rob Younger from the Birdman's first band - they played there". @10.37 mark.
@dailybackup8372 oh sheesh I meant the other RB guy Oops 😬
Thanks for that. He saw robs band there ...I'll see if I can fix it up Cheers
@@Gioia67 Don't get me wrong, I'm just a pedantic music historian. - Love your Vids, keep em coming.
I used to live in a share house in Caulfield south on the dole. We used to smuggle a cask of wine into the espy. We would buy one drink at the bar and spend the rest of the night filling up that glass from the cask. We had the best times there.

Geweldig !!!
I didn’t mind the old Sydney Entertainment Centre, I saw my first rock concert there in December 1985, it was Midnight Oil (they went off live). The best band I saw there was AC/DC (in 1988,1996 and 2001), the worst were Bon Jovi 1987 (they were rubbish), and Guns N Roses (1988) and they were absolute garbage.
I recall going there a few times in the 80's. St kilda was a interesting place back then.😊
What ever happened to Australia is more the question. It’s only a matter of time till they actually rename the country to something more appropriate. The Gold Coast council is just in business with the developers to only build residential ant mounds bcse that’s where the money is at. It’s just a beach and coffee shops and thousands of high rises and roads getting smaller and more congested. No adult entertainment at all
Sylvania Hotel (Promises was shit), Cronulla Workers, Caringbah Inn....70's amd 80's unbeatable
Stallions was one of favourite pub venues saw the Party Boys on my 18 birthday John Swan awesome.General Bourke cool venue When you said DeMont bought back memories we must have been at the same gig.
Have always felt privileged to have attended what must have been near the fag end of Lee Gordon’s big shows. 1968 Who/Small Faces/Paul Jones/Doug Parkinson & the Questions. Legendary. Although concert experienced difficulties with stadium’s revolving stage, my only complaint would be that. Being an early show and due to consequent delays, we were permitted to remain and attend following show. However, as me and my mates were only about 11yrs old, that required exiting to use a public phone to inform our mums and as we weren’t allowed to re enter the stadium. (particular1968 problem, both for reliance on landline phone communication and Mum’s’ permission) So, it was back on the bus up William Street to Town Hall and back on the train to the suburbs. Really though, as a first concert experience, nothing could compare. As a kid listened to radio hits and liked Who singles, but was in no way prepared for the auto destructive performance! Blew my tiny mind and Small Faces’ Tin Soldier, a current hit at that time remains an all time favourite. Recommend to all listen again and realise that Marriott was maybe the best white soul voice ever? Especially, check KZread clip from French TV with PP Arnold, superb.
Tin Soldier is one of my all time favourite songs 🎵 wow what a great experience for you 👏👏👏

Wow memories (Well what I can remember). Went with my mate a couple of times who liked Mother Goose.
Mother Goose never saw them but I reckon would have been hilarious 😂
I saw Mother Goose at Marconi. From memory they were supported by Paul Kelly and the Dots. At the time I was driven there by a mate and had no idea where we were. The missus and I ended up buying a place just around the corner. We still live there and walk to the club often.
@@geoffzenner yes I still go to Marconi . Holds special l memories
Wednesday night dollar drink nights at the Coogee Bay Hotel. Saw ice Cube at Selina’s
Wow How cool👏👏👏
That was a great trip down memory lane!! Saw the Gravies often enough, didn't see the BP til they came back from the UK (still gd!). Great to see a mob of Fred's art/flyers!!
The Angels recorded parts of their live album "LiveLine" at the manly vale hotel
@aidanjasmins1294 and Bankstown RSL👌
Yeah Gioia, Joe Walsh was playing for the party boys in the early-mid 80s after making mates in Oz during a hols break. Saw him in the PBs at Cbah Inn with Swanny and the gang
@@Horatio411 great bloke Joe Walsh 💥💥💥
On The Street aka The Bible!
Juke, Ram, Rolling Stone etc; all fodder for me as a budding professional musician in the Seventies and Eighties. Never read newspapers because they always seemed to contain bad news. 🍻👍🏼
I miss picking up OTS and Drum Media
@@Gioia67 Those gig guides were my life’s blood!😂
Great memories Gioia. Looking at your books I counted about 18 that I have. Blood, Sweat and Beers by Murray Engleheart an absolutely essential read. Something on Sunbury might be good for a future vlog. It has long been referred to as our Woodstock and was the forerunner to the great aussie pub rock explosion of the 70's and 80's. The triple album that came out of Sunbury 73 was the first record release on the Mushroom label heralding the start of a great Gudinski musical empire.
@joevass5172 I want to buy so many more 🤣🤣 Sunbury definitely on the cards . And like a particular year in Rock say 1980...so much can be done . Tha ks for the support ✌️✌️✌️

@stephenparkes9543 😄 haha that's a dually a great idea 😃
@@Gioia67 The Blue Mountains and east coast north and south of Sydney (80s, early 90s) had some interesting venues. Unfortunately noise control ended a lot of great hot spots. Cheers and take care.
@stephenparkes9543 Thanks...yeh, even in 1979, the Govt became stricter with liquor licencing rules, and noise issues were a massive reason things started to change
Played the Governor’s pleasure with D Minor and the Dischords. Always remember the perfectionist lighting guy who made us wait hours while he jerked off over his lightshow, giving us very little time to set up or even eat before our show. Most main bands were friendly and helpful to supports, but there were exceptions. I guess you never stop paying your dues!😁
Saw Mi-Sex for the first time at the Stage Door. Great Kiwi band with an innovative light show! Wall to wall punters!
I have to redo this one ....couldn't find the old site 😆

Played gigs all around Sydney but it was never too much too much to finish the night up at the Cross, particularly the Manzil Room. Lots of fellow musos till late with the same idea, then a famous kebab and back to the Western Suburbs for some sleep, then do it all over again.
