I saw them in 91-92(ish at the Horden not Selinas), but agree, was the loudest gig ever. Weird vibe too - punks and metal-heads eyeing each other off feeling like something could break out at any minute but never did.

Lined up on the eve of my 18th birthday in 1981 to see the Sunny Boys, one of my all time favourite live acts. The door guy almost didn’t let me in as the clock hadn’t ticked over but did eventually get in and had the greatest night. Went on to see countless bands over the years. Fantastic venue never to be replaced.

Thank you this is so good. Saw some awesome bands and even the support for the International acts were mind blowing. Some of my favourite Aussie acts I saw there were Hoodoo Gurus, Spy V Spy, The Johnnys, H &C, The Oils, Boom Crash Opera, The Divinyls and lots of beers and somehow got into a fight in the men's toilets during TISM haha. Some dickhead was off his head hassling me while I was doing a piss and wouldn't shut up and leave me alone so I ended up snotting him in the face before he did the same to me Back to the gig and had to tell my mates what happened to laughs all round What was worse was spending all your money on beers and a kebab and me having to walk up the hill in Arden Street and up Broome Street to my home in Maroubra. Great times and what a venue.

One night we watched the Ramones there. We even booked rooms there, because it was terrible to get home from there in Coogee. So anyway, the poor Ramones didn't get their drinks rider that night. Because some silly staff member left out all out in the hallway. Well we couldn't let those drinks get warm...

Needless to say many many great at played at Selina's. I saw Nirvana there for the third time on that tour, and got one of my ribs broken in the crush! That was a good show!. I saw The Cult there when they reformed, a really great Hoodoo Gurus gig where the power cut out during the peak bit of Miss Freelove, felt like someone had thrown a bucket of cold water over us. Many many other gigs that I have sadly forgotten. I remember that the wonderful beer garden that they have there now was just an empty gravel yard during those times. Another great video, Gioia, you are doing us a great service, bringing back these memories

Love what you’re doing with all these videos, they’re deeply important to many of us, and for our culture. These venues/ buildings hold some kind of magic inside the walls from what went on inside them over the years. I only got to see The Butthole Surfers and Mr Bungle at Selina’s because I lived so far out West. Crazy cool gigs!! But my god, the list of performers you’ve mentioned here boggles the mind. I was only aware of less than a quarter of what you’ve mentioned. Keep up with this great important work. Much love.

Having lived in Coogee from the late 80s to the late 90s I pretty much lived at Selinas. I had been lucky to see so many great great bands (Oils, Nivana, Jimmy, WPA, H&C, TISM, etc) but the best I saw was a support act. They were 'Fishbone' in the early 90's , they supported 'The Violent Femmes' and absolutely blew them off the stage. I've seen hundreds of bands over the years a yet to see another band like that one.

Ha ha. I was in the VIP that night, with some friends, sitting straight above him. The crowd was calling for Sex Pistols all night, and John kept saying "We're NOT the Sex Pistols". Then they played RISE and everyone got into them. They had just finished and my mate leaned over and yelled "Play some fucking Pistols John" as a joke. I swear. It broke John. He looked up crestfallen, tears welled in his eyes. I saw him cry. He walked off stage and up the stairs, then stopped at the top to look back over us. It looked like he was still upset. The bass player in our band, thundabox, penned a song "The Man Who Made John Lydon Cry". Hilarious.

Turned up just to have a drink in the front bar, but when I found out The Rollers were gigging that evening in the Selinas section, couldn't resist it. Turned out they could rock pretty well. The support band drummer from a local Aussie band had to stand in as the original drummer had passed out due to excessive alcohol consumption. A good gig! I remember it to this day.

Mid 80's gigs with highlight being James Brown. I remember he wore a purple velvet 3 piece suit and just lit up the stage with his moves. Plenty of H&C gigs with Do Re Mi. Also a memorable gig with Jenny Morris late 80's who had a 'smoke free' gig. When someone lit up she stopped the show with the full support of the crowd the offender was quickly escorted outside. One of my earliest memories of Selina's was seeing MIDNIGHT OIL play. We used to head out in two or three cars full of lads from the Western suburbs and l was always the youngest . Often times l was not 18 yet , so l'm talking 1978/79 . l was legal by September 79. This one night we went to Selina's l remember walking in and finding the floor front of stage filled with Surfies who were all sitting on the ground. The stage was to the right at this time , if l remember correctly. Anyway after a little while the MODELS came on stage and bravely played a few of their edgy new wave songs and l was loving it but the Surfies just sat on the floor and started booing and chanting OILS OILS OILS . I tried to shoosh them but to no avail and the Models just did their set and walked off. l was pissed off because l really liked the MODELS sound.

Rollins , was young , my first proper gig. Was getting squashed and bill weiss was whacking my arms cause I was clinging onto the feedback monitor,so I got up to escape. For 1 second before I launched myself as far back over the crowd, that sweaty iconic Rollins pose is etched into my retina and I can’t remember 💩 normally Saw other gigs but that was a good first one.

Yeah I remember going there regularly in 1976 it was Selinas Discoteque there was a flashy dance floor (like Sat Nite Fever floor ) and we boogied to all the songs of the time. One of the big big hits was Andrea true Connection - More more more and Party Line. would dance all night and go home with a leg cramp Ha ! Loads of other pub bands thereafter ofcourse. The 80s was the peak with bands. In the early 90s I saw Crowded house which was great. Fun fact - my dad was a jazz muso + back in the early 60s there was the Aust Jazz Convention held in the beer garden at CBH. got many old pix of this which Dad took. its been a good music venue a long time. Also my aunt and uncle had there honeymoon here in Nov 1946. So much history & such a great spot.

I moved to Sydney in 92, and the first gig I went to there was L7. I had people trying to pick fights with me before I entered, due to being with some female friends, and once inside, I realised there was about double the occupancy as to what I would expect from a club that size back home. After a couple more gigs, I decided that gigs in the city or the North Shore were definitely more my vibe.

Yep, went there lots when living in Sydney. I def remember Midnight Oil (twice) INXS twice, Simple Minds, and numerous others who slip the memory. Horrific to hear it might be turned into luxury appartments. The curse of gentrification continues at the expense of iconic venues and pubs. In my home city of Brighton it's an ongoing battle against developers. Or new appartments are built near a venue then new residents complaining of noise, is a favourite.

My favourite venue, Saw Rose Tattoo threre several times, met the band and had some great chats with Angry both pre and post gigs. I saw Cradle of Filth taking to the stage well after midnight in '97, featuring their classic lineup. Around the same time, I also caught performances by the Rollins Band and You Am I. Fishbone in '96 was a definite highlight. Mr Bungle in 2000 left us hanging for over an hour post-Neil Hamburger's set, which had everyone in stitches or agony, especially with his classic about Anthony Kiedis and a junkie. Primus in '98 stands out too, particularly when Les Claypool mentioned it was the fastest rendition of "Is It Luck?" they had ever done. A few other concerts come to mind, Screaming Jets, Grinspoon etc but these are the ones that stand out the most.

@@Gioia67 Rollins was excellent. He spoke about Stuart Diver, the fella trapped under rubble in the Thredbo landslide disaster. I actually got to experience crowd-surfing at that gig, which was a memorable moment. However, the Bungle gig didn't go as smoothly. We were barred from re-entering the venue when we stepped outside for some fresh air about an hour into the set. The place was incredibly packed, and unfortunately, the security at that time was very aggressive; I witnessed them forcibly removing a woman by dragging her out on the ground by her arms. It was unsettling.

God. Trying to get a cab back to Surry Hills after a show was a nightmare. Me and 2 mates worked with the night managers girlfriend 89-91 and we got VIP to anything we wanted. They were stickers. We were naughty and used to use 2 of the 3 stickers to sneak all our friends in blocking off the views of the rich and famous. Of all the bands PIL, Buzzcocks, Foo Fighters, Cramps,...., the wildest crowd i ever saw was Transvision Vamp. Crazy! (Ps. Can you do a video on the Phoenician Club please?)

. I seen the Ramones, James Brown, Cheap Trick, Party Boys with Joe Walsh, Madness, Angels, Mid Night Oil, Cold Chisel. Ramones & James Brown are still two of the best live acts I've seen anywhere anytime 37 years later, The Ramones were everything thing you'd expect for a die hard Ramones fan. I've never seen anyone anywhere, work a crowd like JB. Danny Ray (JB's MC for 30 years) did the whole JB breaking down on stage routine where Danny Ray comes out with cape to help JB reluctantly off stage, then at the last second comes back on. You ain't seen nothin until you heard the entire crowd geed up by Danny Ray calling out James Brown, James Brown, James Brown.

Much of this time span I lived in Tamarama and would walk to Coodgee which was easy enough , walking back, not so much, and I crashed in waverley cemetery I guess half a dozen times , one time I awoke and there are D's every where , turned out Gerry Adams , the leader of Sinn Fein, [ political arm of the IRA] was on a junket and Waverley cemertary is a historically significant Catholic thing.. Phew thought I was in trouble for a minute.
