The meaning of this "awakened dream" remains in the air, and the interpretation is up to the audience. Some sources say that's a sign that he is actually a replicant, a theory sustained by the one that says "all replicants dream of unicorns" (or "electric sheep" as the P.K. Dick's title novel says). I tend to disagree with this theory, simply because he wasn't sleeping. Others say the unicorn represents Rachel and his passion for her. I tend to believe that the unicorn symbolizes a desire for an "unbridled freedom" who emerged from his deepest "soul" to escape from the capitalistic and autocratic world of Blade Runner. I see this masterpiece as quasi manifesto to the ones who realize how dystopic and auto-destructive our world is in so many ways that it can't be synthesized in just one comment.

I've only seen the director's cut and final cut, so I was curious about the theatrical ending that I'd read about. I like it visually, as it shows a welcome contrast to the gloominess of most of the movie, in dark and crowded LA, and it's good to see Deckard and Rachel get away. But I don't like the narration and am glad it was deleted.

The real ending. Absolutely nothing cheesy or “happy” about it. There is hope and the promise of adventure though. Like when the Roy releases the dove into the clear blue sky. Why do people insist on everything being dark? It’s just rainy and night when most of the film takes place.

If they changed the tone of that monologue and tweaked the over all atmosphere to be slightly less sunny (and lose the goddamn saxophone), this would have been the perfect ending. It’s the one I saw as a kid, and it felt good after all the rain and dystopia; a bit like the momentary escape to nature Winston had in 1984. A sad respite from it all.

I'm one of the very very very few people who like this ending more than the Director's Cut's. The voiceover all throughout the film turning it into a modern Film Noir worked for me, and this final scene makes one leave the theater with an overall good feeling. True, the landscape contradicts the rest of the film but Dekkard and Rachel having escaped the dystopian atmosphere, being able to enjoy the time they have left is what I call a "happy end". And those final words "We didn't know how much time we have... Who does?" That's philosophically true. :)

Fucker is the exact right word. Father sounds like submissive begging. Nothing is submissive about Roy, and he is certainly not begging, he is demanding under the most severe of penalties. Which penalty he is not shy to impart, deservedly or not -- a guy like this does not know the word father, it does not exist in his vocabulary. And the movie makes that clear in every scene Roy appears -- they really messed it up with that meek "father" attempt at political correctness. Roy does not give a fuck about imbecilic political correctness... They should have never tampered with that line. I don't know a more memorable movie quote, other, maybe, than "Good evening, Clarice..." -- and so it goes...
