    I never bought the Deckard is a replicant theory but I do like this scene. For me, the unicorn symbolizes Rachel. She's one of a kind, unique, not like the other replicants. Deckard has already fallen in love with her, even if he isn't conciously aware of it.

    This is a theory I’m thinking about to. It’s easy for you to think about Deckard’s Replicant Identity theory. But your theory helps the ending more meaning than the other. I looked for the meaning of unicorn & I don’t think it plausible even though Ridley Scott confirmed Deckard is a Replicant.

    Its not this scene in a vacuum that makes the theory. Its the fact Gaffe knows about the dream too. Like when Deckard tells Racheal about her memories with the butterfly's. If he never told anyone about the dreams then Gaffe shouldnt know, unless they are implants.

    Funny, there are actually five versions of the film. Work print (original director's cut, but not approved by Scott which was leaked in 1990), US theatrical, World theatrical (these are virtually the same except the World version has more violence, the US version had the violence toned down because US preview audiences reacted badly to it), and the Scott's 1992 director's cut, which was approved of by Scott but didn't actually involve him much. Finally there was the Final Cut, which is by far the best and makes the film far more timeless. The differences are: Work print: No cheesy ending, no voice over, no unicorn scene, a few additional scenes Theatrical both: Corny ending, voice over, no unicorn scene (World version has more violence) Directors cut (1992): No cheesy ending, no voice over, includes short unicorn scene Final cut (2006): No cheesy ending, no voice over, includes longer unicorn scene, additional footage re-added to make certain scenes longer, improve post-production, corrections made to certain parts of the film for example, correctly saying how many replicants died escaping, fixing serial number on scale, making tattoo on dead replicant in bath more obvious. If you want to see the best version, watch the Final cut, it makes the film a lot less corny and 80s. Don't watch the theatrical version if you can avoid it.

    I have to admit though that I prefer the way the Unicorn scene is edited in the '92 Director's cut. This Final Cut version seems poorly edited with too much emphasis on Deckard's face. The '92 version just showed us a wide angle of him half-drunk and stroking the piano key as the scene fades into the Unicorn in the woods then fades back as Deckard comes to his waken state.

    IMHO: The longer ending in which Deckard tells us how he told Rachael he loves her, is an essential part of the story not to be left out. It shows the final redemption of Deckard who had become a non-human human, a hardened murderer. (That Deckard had become "hon-human" is explicitly stated in narration.) Deckard was redeemed by the Christ figure Roy (Roy=> king; but in Gaelic "red"), whose nail-pierced hand pulled him up from death, noble humane replicant saving the murderous non-humane human. Also Deckard was redeemed by Rachael's love.

    Director's cut is 1992, not 1982. 1982 was the original without the unicorn scene. It is unnecessary as is Deckard being replicant. We are ALL replicants (sub-human slaves) until we evolve to being ourselves. This is an ethical theme (e.g. Wittgenstein). Adding more layers to an already ambiguous story doesn't make it easier. BTW, Scott used the same theme and symbols/motifs in Alien first and then Legend (where this footage no doubt was borrowed). Watch Alien very closely. The creature never salivates for Ripley but gushes like rain to eat the others. Next, Legend OUTRIGHT tells you the theme in the dialog.

    The meaning of this "awakened dream" remains in the air, and the interpretation is up to the audience. Some sources say that's a sign that he is actually a replicant, a theory sustained by the one that says "all replicants dream of unicorns" (or "electric sheep" as the P.K. Dick's title novel says). I tend to disagree with this theory, simply because he wasn't sleeping. Others say the unicorn represents Rachel and his passion for her. I tend to believe that the unicorn symbolizes a desire for an "unbridled freedom" who emerged from his deepest "soul" to escape from the capitalistic and autocratic world of Blade Runner. I see this masterpiece as quasi manifesto to the ones who realize how dystopic and auto-destructive our world is in so many ways that it can't be synthesized in just one comment.

    Unicorn baffles me. Unicorn to me connotes 1) mythical existence & 2) per Irish ballad: extinct critter (missed out on the ark w/ Noah, tho there are no unicorns in Bible - KJV does have a ref tho). So my best guess is symbol of ceasing to exist, the horror of non-existence is getting thru to Deckard by enamoration w/ Rachael. I see absolutely no connection w/ the theory that Deckard is a replicant. 4 me Deckard cannot be a replicant since 1) he lacks the physical strength of a replicant - they whup him easily & 2) it ruins the argument of the plot (evil non-human acting human vs decent humane robots). I can explain the 1 scene where Deckard's eyes have red on the theory that Rachael is part of Deckard's redemption from being a murderer of humanoids (ironic, lover of animals). My theory on the 1 red eye scene is that Rachael's good nature is infecting Deckard. I cud interpret Rachael's final "We were made for each other" as man & robot complement each other. It appears that the red eyes of replicants is a message from the screen writer to the audience, not seen by characters in the movie, since then the emotion-test would be unnecessary to ID replicants. So screen writer/ director is telling us that Rachael's nature has sympathetically infected Deckard. I still look for a better explanation than mine for the unicorn.

    Zen Christian Rene Decartes (Dekard) who dreams electric roses in Rene Cartesian x, y plane RC (german RozenCreuzer) :) suggest that human soul is in pineal gland Pine spike synonyms ir unicorn horn, cat killer :) Erwin Schrodinger suggest that soul is in pineal gland away of human skull like unicorn horn who is outside horse (h-rose) head, and yes rose without spikes is just ordinary flower who can't protect self. This movie i don't read book about Dekard Ford - i machine car Harrison Ford becoming human who not kill other people by government authority or like most evil policeman will say respect my autohoritah - Eric Cartman . So unicorn don't exist (more likely not present) it means is outside of human body and android will never can be created who can dream electric sheep on other hand self driving cyborg car can. Ford Tin Lizzy :) Can Lizzy Tinman - If I Only Had a Heart. And Kylo Ren never become A new Darth Vader at least Adam Driver can act in movie with Nascar cars.

    I don't know where to begin with this film. The first time I saw it I felt so many different things and it stayed with me for a while. I was shocked and disturbed by the savagery of the replicants. The entire society in Blade Runner is a dystopian wasteland culturally. In this world, Man has decided to play God and create artificial beings to be whatever they want and do whatever they want, it is inhuman. I never cared too much if Deckard was a replicant or human, either one is interesting. I don't like the fact that people have turned this into almost a religiousness in terms of devotion to this film but everyone has their preferences. Before I had ever seen this film I realized that this film was made by the same director as Alien and this got me thinking what if the two are in the same universe? In the Alien series, you never get to see Earth so this got me thinking that Alien deals with the horrors outside of Earth while Blade Runner deals with the horrors we created. The two overlap with both the replicants and the synths and I feel the Prometheus prequel franchise shows this by seemingly blending the themes of Alien and Blade Runner. On a sidenote if anyone has seen Samurai Jack, check out an episode called The Tale of X9, it is an interesting tribute to Blade Runner complete with rain and ambient sax. I am curious to see where this series goes in the future, do the two paths join together or do they continue on their own path. I think it would be interesting if the two paths merged as it would reveal an interesting new side to Alien and Blade Runner. In terms of story, Philip K. Dick was ahead of his time, many of his books and concepts were quite interesting and original. His stories get you thinking about life and what we are or maybe that is just how I am interpreting his stories. I like the film Total Recall, you can never tell if the film is a dream or it is real.

  • @venian646

    @venian646

    5 жыл бұрын

    I should also add, I always interpreted this film as what if you took an Action flick set in the future kind of like Lethal Weapon a typical 80's action film but instead of focusing on the action elements, you look at other elements in the film and go deeper than just a simple action flick. I think this is best realized by the fact that Deckard is hired to hunt down the replicants by Bryant and Gaff yet you see very little of these other characters for the rest of the film. The film is not interested in developing any of these characters, there is another element that is more important. For most of the film you only see Deckard on a wild goose chase looking for answers. The film focuses on Deckard trying to find deeper meaning than what is on the surface.

    Imo, this whole scene is unnecessary. The idea of Deckard being a replicant detracts from the fundamental moral question of the film regarding what it means to be a sentient being and the value of life. After all, if Deckard is a replicant, i.e. a genetically engineered (synthetic) being, then who cares if he dies -since his consciousness and memories are all manufactured anyway. It seems like a cheap ploy by director Ridley Scott to garner new interest in the film when the director's cut came out, and I wonder if he just inserted a scene from his later film Legend with the unicorn, to create this 'new' extra-dimension, when it really seems out of place, and completely superfluous.

  • @anniedawg6174

    @anniedawg6174

    rather i think it brings us right to the moral core of the film. we saw clearly how Deckard 'debunked' Rachael's fake memories. She casually asks at some point if he's used his replicant tests on himself, then with the unicorn we have evidence to in turn 'debunk' Deckard's own human essence ..I just think it brings the moral question closer to ourselves. "what do i value about a robot, about a human, about a main protagonist, of myself, etc" .. was that thrown in after-the-fact? the original intent? we'd have to explore philip K dick's notes or something..

  • @curcumin417

    @curcumin417

    7 жыл бұрын

    Very nice answer - I agree with your second part, 'what do i value about a robot, about a human, of myself, etc.' as being the fundamental moral/existential question of the movie. However, I disagree that Deckard as a replicant increases or underscores the meaning of this question. I believe in fact that it muddles it - because one of his character's primary roles is to retire replicants. Initially he is very cold and distant towards them ("replicants are like any other machine, a benefit or hazard, if they are a benefit then it's not my problem"). But each time he kills one of them in the line of duty, his personal conscience forces him reflect upon his actions, "to soul-search", and ultimately comes to the conclusion, reinforced by his emotional bond for Rachel and later Roy Batty's forgiveness, that there really is little to no difference between "us and them" (human beings vs. replicants) in terms of basic fundamental desire to live, to feel, and seek happiness, companionship, etc. This could be expanded in a greater sense - when we remove superficial differences between groups of people, races, cultures, other creatures, etc, from Maslow's heirarchy of needs perspective, we are basically all the same. The problem with Deckard being a replicant then is that it cheapens this experience of empathy, built upon the potential assumed difference between humans and androids, because his entire consciousness, memories, and psychology would be simulated/programmed. So then where is the value in a replicant killing other replicants and then feeling bad about it? Are replicants even alive in the biologic sense? (I guess so, if they are genetically engineered). At the same time, your first analysis of Deckard as a replicant based on the Unicorn dream does offer an interesting glimpse into his own inner psyche, almost a meta-narrative, as to what constitutes a self-aware sentient entity, dream interpretation, and stored memories. One could argue that without the existence of soul, there is no fundamental difference between a human, animal, robot, etc. and that consciousness and personality is just an emergent property of a complicated organization of matter - i.e. artificial or natural brain. So if replicants learn to feel love and other emotions, and gain new memories through experience, those are equally valid as our own. Incidentally, I have heard that in Japanese culture, they really do believe that inanimate objects, like rocks and mountains have a soul/life-force, and that's why they seem so ready to build and accept robots into their society! P.S. I guess the only issue I have is that one unicorn scene seems kind of "tacked on" by the director. Anyway, good discussion, BR is a true classic, and offers many subtle allegories while at the same time having phenomenal atmosphere and music (Vangelis!). I am keen to hear what you think further. --

    For what it's worth, various sources on the Internet give conflicting accounts - some say the unicorn scene was filmed in 1982 for blade runner but was not used for the theatrical release, and was later added to 'Legend', while others state the opposite, i.e. that it was filmed for Legend, then reinserted for BR director's cut. One commentator states the following: From Jon snow: "This was answered by the screenwriter. It's in the book making of Blade Runner - how Ridley said the screenwriter was genius for making Deckard a replicant and since it wouldn't alter how he shot the movie, he let him believe it because he said he was a genius. This is been said so many times. He's not a Replicant. Would you send a Replicant who was weaker, less hardy, ran out of breath easier, couldn't withstand as much pain etc. as what he's hunting? Deckard ran out of breath, was bothered by his broken fingers, got beat up by Pris, while Roy Batty was like Superman. That unicorn scene was shot for the movie Legend and added in later cause Ridley is obsessed with him being a Replicant. The whole relationship between him and Rachel makes no sense if he is. The point is how can he love her if she is a replicant. Also if he was and his memeories were false then why does Dave Holden have this relationship with Deckard that goes back far? Watch deleted scenes for the relationship between them. And BTW Deckard never doubts who he is in Blade Runner. He doubts if he can love a Replicant and if it's worth it due to her maybe only living another few years. Think of what Gaff says about Deckard and Rachel being together at the end of the movie." -- Your mileage may vary. At the end of the day, who gives a crap anyway, they can make up whatever they want, it's just a movie.
