    The model 3 had a modification made that used one of the mini hamamatsu CsI scintillators that are up on Ebay currently. It's quite effective at helping pin point a source, ofcourse it does lack some volume necessary for high sensitivity. Although this does mean a person could technically use the internal for rough dose measurements.

    @@jamesluck2969 I was wondering where you learned electronics. I’ve been wanting to learn electronics to be able to fix up Ludlums. Could you maybe point me in the right direction to learn electronics? And also, how did you learn how to fix up Ludlums and Eberlines from electronics? Thank you for any information or help that you can give.

    @@abyphysics414 honestly most of my knowledge came from first learning electronics mostly by trial and error with the aid of youtube and a few forums like EEV blogs forum. Then once I new electronics, I was aready into radiation detection and went more into repair and manufacturing of equipment and probes, the starting out technicians best friend is a schematic diagram usually. Although I'm maybe 15 years off of when I first truly taught myself electronics so it's kinda hard for me to self reflect on all of my sources for information I've found.

    @@abyphysics414 same theory, but kinda far off in practice. The mod is probably closer to a ludlum 3-97 with a internal NaI scintillator and a external of your choice. The 194 is ludlums spin off of a Bicron uRem, and is for generally near background dose measurements using a tissue equivalent scintillator

    Hey! Just a quick question about a Ludlum. I have a broken Ludlum Model 26-1 frisker. When I insert batteries, I hear the alarm go off and the alarm LED turn on. The screen won’t come on either. I missed the notification for this comment apparently, my apologies. Right off the bat I dont immediately know what the issue is, that sounds like a issue that without testing and troubleshooting a few things I would just be shooting in the dark. The primary thought that comes to my mind first is possibly a Hv power short to ground. This sounds like itll be either directly in the hv power supply, or in/around the probe

    Your video is very helpful for me learning how to get access to the dial indicator of my model 2 which looks like the same setup you show here. Mine has the needle frozen in one position, I can move it a little by bumping the case, but it doesn't move at all when turned on or with a radiation source (but is working as per audio). Do these ever need lubrication inside? Is replacing them the best option for this situation? A phone call to Ludlum said the movement costs $118. I have 5 other Ludlums, but none that I can cannibalize since they all function.

  • @jamesluck2969
    @jamesluck29698 ай бұрын

    They should not require lubrication for the perceivable life of the unit. But they operate similarly to a watch movement using synthetic ruby bushings. So very light lubrication can help at times. The problem may not actually be the gauge but rather the gauge driver, does the unit operate in battery check?

    The smartpac dongles use a ibutton memory cell to talk to the meter, I'll see if I can locate the schemes I have for it. The dongles are only really necessary if you want to use more then one probe preset. Otherwise the meter can store one probe set, there are modifications to get around the obsolete smart connections if this is something you are intrested in. The connectors are obsolete almost one off connectors, by manufacturer of thorkom but I have yet to find a supplier. Otherwise if you swap the connector for say a lemo then make a custom cable you could probably use a smartpac. Youd just need to make a adaptor for the smartpac, and most Lemo's can be pushed to 1kv safely if its wire connections are safely sheilded. But again they only serve the purpose of quickly swapping probe types, and calibration. The one issue you may encounter, if memory serves right is you will need the calibration software no matter what to set the meter up, and if its cal locked, you will need it to unlock it. I will see if I have the pin out on both connectors, you can also run the software on a virtual engine. If all of this seems like too much trouble depending upon price I maybe intrested in another. Just what they get listed for is not what they will sell for on Ebay. I'm on discord under the name of jamesluck my pfp is the radiation sign, if this is easier.

Just watch out there is one called a 375 Calypso, it looks identical on the outside, and has the legacy colors of cream and maroon. It does not give dose rate, it's a count detector for a software defined monitoring system. No front panel controls work they are purely over the internet. I still am unable to get the one I got stuck with to work, although ludlum was a help with some information on it.

    Disclaimer I figured out the difference between the 1500 and 1550 pelican cases. The 1550 is a little bigger which in this case facilitates both more internal space for equipment but also the opportunity to have more foam around what you do end up putting in the case.
