You can repair the seal area of a damaged shaft using a Speedi Sleeve: I have used them on unobtainable machine tool gearbox shafts with perfect results. Well worth looking into.

Hi James. I’ve just been offered to be custodian of a mint early 90s DAF 400 that looks to be identical to yours. It lives in a relatives garage in the south of France and is very low miles. Nothing wrong with.patching it up. The World is full of: "If it isn't concourse, it's junk" types. Who cares? It's been saved from the scrappie. They could buy it from you and do a concourse resto themselves. If you hadn't patched it, it wouldn't exist for them to fully resto. More power to you, sir!

I had an SD1 years ago and foolhardily decided to change the heater matrix Blimey that was way more complicated than I had bargained for. Got it done, though. I'm impressed by the complexity of the thing. The people that designed that thing must have had a great imagination and understanding of mechanisms. Glad to see you posting again. Mart.

God, I remember the car park! Tarpaulins and working/welding in the rain. I know you never intended to do a full restoration of the diesel but I’m so glad you have, it’s going to be gorgeous when it’s finished (which it probably is by now?). I love the randomness of the videos, you never know what gem pops up. 😃

I have been following since before you moved from the office carpark 2-3 months. i felt sorry for you in the cold :P I am not a rover fan as such but a diesel sd1 i didn't even know that was a thing and you do a nice looking job. VW in their infinite wisdom decided to not only have foam that crumbled to seal and whatever it does but also to have some huge holes in the heater flaps so when it went it went, cold air in winter and hot during summer :P

Apologies if this is a daft question but how do the jacks you are using work? Do you use the trolley jack to get them under it?

Yeah use the trolley Jack to lift cans then position stands underneath. The lever and toothed bits are just to adjust their height. It doesn’t actually lift the car. Think they came from Halfords

It’s nice to see this SD1 again but really sad to see it looking like this. It was definitely on the road back in 2011/12 as it was seen several times being driven locally to me. I took some photos of it back in 2012 which are on my Flickr (Surrey Classics) I always wondered what happened to it. Best of luck with the resto. I’ve subscribed & will watch all the videos of this rare Rover. Cheers.

Very simple and helpful video. For anyone struggling, I found removing the 19mm bolt from the bottom of the strut, to let the hub sag, helped a lot, gave 20-30mm more clearance to get the bags in and out

Great video, do you have any tips for fault diagnosing why my SD1 won't crank. I've noticed you took some steps off camera to clean up the connectors to the starter motor. Did you test any of these with the multimeter? I'm a novice but inspired by your video.

If you have a multimeter, check the small wire that goes to the starter motor. Make sure that when the ignition switch is turned to cranking that you have 12v. If not check the start relay which will probably be in inner ring near the battery. Good luck!

Those rear armrests are genius. Most armrests just go up & down on a single pivot line and so need to be padded on both sides. These pivot like a garage door and so only one side needs to be padded.

The 2400SD looks quite small compared to your E61 ! Back in the day, the SD1 was (seemingly) quite a bit bigger than the then-5 Series E28.

Beautiful paint job! So glad that you persevered with this one, the VM oil burner was never popular, hence there aren't that many of them about now. Looks resplendent in that dark blue. Now that this one is nearing completion, hope to see the Green V8S being worked on next. Top work James. 👍
