Rover SD1 rear wheel bearing replacement

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

An overly long video on changing rear wheel bearings on Rover sd1. Same arrangement on loads of other cars like Ford Escort, Capri etc, anything with a live axle.

I know that fantastic video found it really interesting. You make these videos as long as you like.👍🤩

You can repair the seal area of a damaged shaft using a Speedi Sleeve: I have used them on unobtainable machine tool gearbox shafts with perfect results. Well worth looking into.

Don’t think I’ve had complaints about my ring not fitting snuggly on any shaft James 😂😂. Great to see you back where you belong 🤔 a dirty , dusty , greasy, grimy workshop !!!! HEAVEN 👌🏻.

Excellent job, James and well explained. It's a special variant of Timken taper roller that can tolerate thrust both ways. Limited in the one direction but wheel loads are predominantly inwards rather than outwards. All the best, Mart in Solihull.

Thanks Mart. Yes it’s a surprising arrangement especially when you compare it to the opposed pair on the front axle.

Always helpful - we're all grateful for longer videos because you're very descriptive and detailed. Much obliged. As with the C-clip missing from the manuals, many of us would be scratching our heads, but for your video. Many more, please! Best wishes from Australia.

I’ve watched your channel ever since you started on the diesel. My Dad owned two P6’s, but I’ve never had an SD1 ( I’d love one though). Not as sofisticated as the earlier Rovers but awesome to drive. You’d go nuts for the rust free specimens that are in Australia! My only owner history is with Land/Range Rovers and those years have now passed me by. I’m rambling now … this is just a note to let you know that your videos have brought much pleasure to an old guy at the other end of the earth. Thanks. Regards Roger 🇦🇺🦘🌏 PS. Never be afraid that your content is boring or too long, no one is making us watch!

Thanks for the kind words Roger. I actually collected the diesel from the bodyshop last Saturday so I’ll be starting the final push to get it finished very soon!

I would say the groof on the lip seal surface can be filled with some smart stuff like JB weld.

Had plenty of practice on my mk 5 cortina rear axle changing bearings. Use the grinding disc horizontal to cut through bearing inner race. The bearing retainer can be heated up with a blowlamp then just drops on then shrinks onto half shaft.

I always cut across at a angle when doing bearing removal especially when you have something in the way of the grinder if that helps 👍

I wonder if the change in the bearing design with the groove and circlip was done after BL started racing the TR7s and SD1s ?

Hi, do any of you guys know what diameter the splines are on the wheel studs? I need to put in longer ones in an SD1 to fit Porsche BBS Mahle wheels.

Yes there are a few. This diff has a Salisbury type lsd, used in loads of things. It’s a clutch type one. You can also get quaife Torsten type doffs but they are helical gear torque biasing type.

She is generally confused as to why I like them. She doesn’t like the smell of the garage or the mess I make and makes me take my clothes off at the back door before I come in. But she doesn’t mind so long as I’m happy and cook her dinner
