So that is why Brian clough never got the England job.
Would loved to have seen what Clough would have done with England!
Great interview and very useful insight in the different roles in analytics, met Tom & Sam whilst they were at Stats Perform, really cool guys gave/facilitated one of my first experiences in football analytics
Thanks. Hoping to get Sam on too if his schedule permits. Clearly two very smart, but also genuine people too 👌🏼
Hi Chris, I am from Sri lanka. There are very limited resources to learn sports analytics in SL. Thank you for creating these videos and sharing the knowledge ❤
Thank you!
You keep talking about coding the game but you don't explain what that entails.
I could do a video on this actually... basically, break the game down into the events/actions that occur. Using a software like this (www.in-playsports.com/software/individuals) you get a timeline which timestamps all the actions to make it easier to review. You then get a timeline of the match (like the first image on that link). Hope that helps!
@@chrisgill_UK I see. I understand now. Thank you for your swift response. I'm interested in scouting and recruitment analysis but know I could do performance analysis. I'm moving over to Slovenia next month and hoping that I can get into it over there as the entry point might be a little easier than England. I've applied for a couple of live statistician jobs to get my foot in the door.
Brilliant stuff, Ewan comes across so well
Thanks Mikey. He definitely does!... and he just re-united with Jesse Marsch with the Canada National Team 🇨🇦
Great video! Will have to watch the analysis example a few times, a lot to unpack there. Really cool as well that Ewan just got appointed as Assistant Coach of my national team (Canada) with Jesse Marsch. Will be really paying attention to how they do now, exciting times!
Thanks! yes, definitely. Ewan knows his stuff and I loved the screen share part. Indeed, I hope they do a great job in their new role. 🇨🇦
This is a really great video, as someone who is hopefully about to graduate from university with a sports degree but has little to no experience in the football world, this has given me a great insight into how I can achieve my goals, keep up the great work!
Thanks Jamie. Glad it was useful. Lots more like it already on the channel and lots more to come! Good luck in your career 👍🏼
@@chrisgill_UK thank you appreciate it, I shall be sure to check more of your content out
do you sell the dashboards?
Hi Bethany. Thanks for watching. I don't sell them currently, but if you go to the original video with Arian, theres a link on how you could reach out to him: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lpej17Wpctu0j7Q.html
I miss him being stuck in a scattergram.
Stumbled back over this when researching for the video 😂
Top top from Belgium Chris!
Thanks! 📈 ⚽️
Top from africa
Amazing, thanks for watching!
Top interview, Chris! Thanks for all you do
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed! 👌🏼
Could you give us examples of objectives and subjective data ? Thank you
Thanks for watching 👍🏼 Subjective would include anecdotal information based on an individual's perceptions, experiences, and emotions. Players might complete a questionnaire for example or a coach may have a certain perception of the game. Subjective would be the 'facts' numbers around what actually happened. Number of shots, passes etc.
Thanks for the great video. I am a data analyst at a hi-tech company (with more rhan a 5 yeard of experience) and I am interested in making the transition to the world of football. Do you have any recommendations on how to do this and present the knowledge I have gained as an advantage for the teams? Thanks in advance
Thanks for watching and for the comment. 100% get a portfolio of football specific projects and share online. I have a video coming out soon with Tom Worville which is very relevant to your question 👍🏼
This is absolutely phenomenal, what an insight! So interesting to see many of the common language Jesse employed during his RB days 'fore-checking', 'forward defending' etc. What program did Ewan use to create the tele-strations of the players moving where he would want to position them?
Thanks for comment and I am glad you enjoyed. I'm not sure on that actually, I can try to find out for you. But yes, the language and terminology used was very interesting. 👍🏼
hudl studio
Am a former football player from Malawi, Africa and currently studying the Google data analytics professional certificate and the FA introduction to football coaching course with hopes to further study all the UEFA coaching certificates in pursuit of football jobs. This is so inspiring and eye opening. Thanks so much and am definitely subscribing for more!!! 🔥🔥😂
Great to hear! thanks for subscribing 🙌🏼
❤ Good insight thank you..
Thanks for watching 🙌🏼
💯💯💯

Interesting Ewan! Enjoyed hearing what you have to say, and how you demonstrated how vital it is to have performance analysis within coaching in the modern game.
100% ... the role of the coach/analyst becoming more popular these days... Thanks for watching Andrea 👍🏼
Thank you Chris for this
No problem, glad you enjoyed 👍🏼
This was a fascinating insight to the scouting world; I'll be looking forward to Chris's book coming out!
Thanks for watching Christian and I'm glad you enjoyed. Likewise, I will also be reading it!
Great interview and a very interesting club, seems to be modelled on St Pauli with the punk rock and skull and crossbones ... which is a fantastic experience for fans.
Thanks for watching John. Indeed... it seems as though they are on track for another promotion and I seen recently an investment from Gemini...
@@chrisgill_UK its an interesting journey, i'll be following from afar while attempting to rescue a recently bankrupt club that i have taken on. Farnham is another interesting non league project.
I don't think football is mathematical. All they're doing is reading math into football instead of reading math out of football.
Maybe you are right... 🤔
Great video. Thank you for all the info.
Thanks for watching, glad it was useful 👍🏼
How do I become an football analyst.
I have many videos that will help you with this including the interviews with other analysts. Learn the game, network, start analysing games in your own time and share your work. Then try to secure some experience at a club
Great video really enjoyed learning more about the relationship between football and mathematics. I will definitely buy Soccermatics 👍
Thanks for watching! Definitely worth a read, for sure 👍🏼
Great interview!
Thanks! 🙌🏼

great explanation
Thanks 🙌🏼
Is he available for an interview relating to African football? I'm doing an MIS on Performance Analysis in Africa. His knowledge on Africa will be valuable.
You'd have to try and reach out, although I know he has a lot going on with MRKT Insights at the moment. Be interesting to see what you find/explore during your studies. Good luck with it 👍🏼
Really loving therecent guests- brilliant work and brilliant insights. Thanks from South Africa
Great to hear! Thanks for watching 👍🏼
The difference between them leagues is only financial. Certainly not in terms of quality of football. Over half the premier league games are awful in terms of technical quality. I’m guessing you don’t watch any foreign football. Finances are important don’t get me wrong. But you have the Italian league who has massive clubs based on success not wealth. Roma, Fiorentina, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Napoli and Lazio. The premier League has two big clubs and the rest are big on finances not in terms of pure footballing merit. This is why the premier league will never have my respect
That is a wildly wrong opinion lol
@@TheNotSoFakeNews not really. Best players in the world still don’t want to play in the premier league, premier league is behind on average attendance in comparison to the Bundesliga, behind on European cup winners from Spain and Italy, the biggest club in the world financially and on football merit is not in the premier league. The not so fake news should be the very much fake news 📰 🎣
@@user-wc1vv1hq9z lol 😂
Not sure I agree, but interesting take... You are right, I don't watch too much foreign football, but always entertain other peoples opinions
I don't think they want or care about your respect: they want your money
If these are ranges. I think people do it for passion then because these figures are extremely loooow
These are a year or so old but I would say they probably haven't changed much. There is such a huge range too. If you are really good and work your way up to an elite team, you may earn much more than I've stated, but we still often see far to many 'unpaid' roles and then very low starting salaries. People definitely do for the passion rather than to earn a lot of money, which is a shame given how rich the clubs are and how much impact these roles can have...
Incredible to say the least <3
Thanks 👍🏼
Thankyou for such informative content 👍🏻
No problem! Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for watching 👍🏼
This was very interesting. Great video Chris, always informative.
Thanks Steven 👌🏼
I see many parents who pay for their kids's access to the academy. What do you think of this? For example, by paying coaches to ensure stronger players are not called to play on trial days or big matches.
Seems dodgy to me but I don't doubt that stuff may happen. All comes down to the ability really so if I 'bought' my kid a way into a trial game, it might gain access initially, but the kid is then just going to get found out and cut loose anyway if they aren't good enough. Don't like the idea of paying coaches/agents though for stuff like that.
Great content!! This was very insightful. Do you have any sample reports that I can look at as a guide?
Not yet, but do plan on creating some soon actually! Will be on my website 👍🏼
Hey can you please tell me how much does a finacial reporter makes in a football club like a CA, ACCA OR ACA in the UK GREAT VIDEO ❤
Thanks for watching. I must be honest, I really don't know about finance roles within clubs. Maybe search for listings online? My knowledge is more on the sports analysts and coaches 👍🏼
@@chrisgill_UK thx I got what I wanted Liverpool is offering a great deal in this field mon - fri a work of football and finance that I like and sat & Sun weekday football 😁
Could multiple saved shots in the span of a few seconds be recorded as a total of over 1 xG? Even though the maximum possible goals that could come from that situation would be only 1 because 1 goal would result in a kickoff? Maybe some models would take this into account?
Each attempt would be given a score even if the the second is just a second or few seconds after the first. The combined xG of both shots could be above 1, but the would be recorded as separate attempts. It does bring up the point of needing to factor in many things such as GK position etc. (if they have just saved the first attempt). Thanks for watching 👍🏼
Sumpter is definetly an inspiration
100% ... I'm a big fan myself!
It’s impressive but also sad. The soul of football is being ripped out. Everything is so data driven. Football used to be an allegory for life, unpredictable. Now every team team plays the same no matter what their skill level, then mavericks and individualism is being squeezed out. This is dangerous stuff…
Not really in my opinion. Teams were always trying to optimise their winning chances and there were always trends. If anything, these days more variety exists due to different approaches and interpretations clubs give to their data. The soul of football is being ripped out from excessive calendars and ridiculous sums of money, not technology.
@@dimman_21 wingers passing backwards. Thanks
Thanks for watching. I will be honest, I do see your point for sure, but I would say this is just how the game is going. Using data to make informed decisions is only going to become more apparent. I do think trends come and go, with playing styles etc. and that is not always to do with things like this. Let's see how it all plays out!
Football is definitely changing (or has changed), but I'm not sure it is sad. Aviation, for instance, has also changed. In the past, pilots had to fly planes on their own; now, they have GPS, autopilots, autoland systems, fly by wire, what not. Do we say that the soul of aviation is being ripped? It is safer to fly today than ever before. Likewise, in football, players and managers today are better (tactically, mentally, physically, etc.) then ever before. Maybe fewer mistakes means less excitement, but it also means higher quality of the game. And I don't agree that mavericks are being squeezed out. How about Will Still, for instance? Would his story be possible without computers and data?
@@Korol1989 you’ve just compared footballers to jumbo jets, GPS systems, and aviation. I mean come on how robotic are you? 🤣
Using this for football manager

Clowns like Adam Mahoney at Bristol rovers who gave his little brother a job whilst at uni. Now please tell me when that happens to women or bame people..
Fair play to her we need more women in the role. But you have interviewed like 5 diverse people the industry like the most of the UK is racist so we have no hope no future whilst “mates keep looking after mates” Should I expose the clubs/companies who responded to our fake cv but didn’t to bame and women candidates?
Thanks for the comment and for watching, Oliver. Although no-one is saying anyone is racist. More a case of many women aren't encouraged to pursue this type of role as a career, or see it as an option, for various different reasons and such they are underrepresented overall.
Handful of people you have interviewed have actually grafted for a role. The industry is racist no idea why you have these videos when they only work for white people.
🤣🤣🤣 when you going to address the elephant in the room. Lack of diversity within analysis 😂😂😂😂 90% get roles due to being white not ability. that’s evident by lack of bame & women in analytic roles. What’s your thoughts?

This was a great interview. I would love to scout and I definitely believe scouting is underrated plus there’s a lack of scouts in the US where I’m at. I can’t afford the coaching licenses here in the US and you need those for the scouting course.
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed. Interesting what you say about the scouting situation over in the US, I know very little about that...
