Gray Hair Transition and Beyond

Gray Hair Transition and Beyond

My story:
I started my Gray Hair journey September 2018 when I was 41 years old. I just celebrated 5 years of being dye free and have no regrets.
I am hoping my Transition story, photos, advice, and tips will help keep you motivated to stick with it and will help make your transition to gray hair and beyond easier and much more enjoyable-it is a bit of a journey but worth it.

    thank you so much! Just a comment: if you have thin straight hair DO NOT use coconut oil or any oil, lotion or lip balm. I tried those tricks and just using a tiny amount made my hair look greasy!!

    She is using 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, like what you use to clean wounds with (from pharmacy), in terms of hair coloring, that is equal to 10 VOLUMN peroxide developer. When using bottled hair colors, most of them use 20 VOLUMN peroxide. So this is mild and will just gradually lift hair color. And she is diluting that down with water & conditioner, so it's even weaker (probably 5 VOLUMN). NOTE: If SPRAYING this, USE EYE PROTECTION, and protect hands, USE GLOVES.

    @NikkiM6593 I'm still going through the process but it gets easier and easier as you go. I still have about four inches of old color but I use blue shampoo at least once every 2 weeks and it's really tamed the reddish color from my old dye. I'm a natural brunette and it's interesting to see the graying process on the natural hair that has grown out this far. I have different shades of gray and I'm actually liking it now. I'm glad I stuck it out. I think I have about 6 more months and I'll be completely grown out. I will say as my hair is growing out I have noticed changes to my hair texture. The gray hair is still soft and touchable but looks coarser. I'm still learning as I go.

    I just used this for my bleached and toned balayage… DO NOT LEAVE ON LONGER THAN 5-10 minutes. OTHERWISE YOUR POROUS HAIR WILL TAKE ON THE PURPLE HUE…. Yeah i panicked but what worked getting it immediately put was Dawn Dish soap and baking soda paste. I had no clarifying shampoo to help strip the color at home. So i made a paste with the dawn with baking soda to create a paste that was not runny. I lathered that into my hair and lathered over and over again applying a squirt of dawn (blue one) every now and then and it came out! So use it and leave in for several minutes. Natural blondes (10) bleached blonde (5) min.

    If you smoke, the nicotine will stain it as well. I don't know if that's why my hair is blonde now or if it's just fading to silver from a red/gold brunet but I do know that my hair is super shiny and not dull at all and I always get complements on it. At age 63 I wouldn't mind if it all went silver or white as I think it would look great as long as it is (past my waist.)

    I'm going to try this for sure. OH YEAH! Here's another tip for using vinegar (white or apple cider) use it in place of fabric softener. It too will smell until the clothes are dry but it removes residues from the detergent and softens the clothing as well as brightening them. I had to do this due to sensitive skin and breakouts of rash from using softeners.

    Tried this today and last night for my shoulder length grown out silver hair. Part of my hair is a brownish gray. Both treatments yielded poor results unfortunately! Barely showed up at all. Second treatment was peroxide and purple shampoo for 35 minutes. I must have stubborn hair! I will try again in a week to see if it will begin to lift. I love my front bangs, nice and light. But I have other tones I dont love. Its still so much better than chasing the grey line! I love being mostly silver.

    Purple shampoo and masks are damaging to my hair. These products dry my hair out and cause a large amount of hair fall out. I have curly wavy hair and it tends to frizz from purple products. I saw this video and decided to give it a try. I have more salt and pepper hair and want my silver to really stand out. After one rinse I saw a significant improvement! I also followed the directions provided (leave on for two minutes). My hair came out shiny manageable, and the curls look fantastic with no frizz. Thank you so much for posting this video.

    Is the Apple cider technique or the hydrogen peroxide technique that you recommended better..want to try one of your suggestions

  • @GrayHairTransitionandBeyond
    @GrayHairTransitionandBeyond2 ай бұрын

    Hi Karen! Great Question! I am speaking from my own experience but I think the peroxide treatment works better to get rid of hard to remove yellow/staining. If you're trying to get rid of yellow, that's the one to use, imo. BUT the ACV rinse has so many great benefits that the peroxide treatment doesn't offer so if you are trying to brighten dull hair or hair that is slightly yellowing along with all the benefits I talked about in the video (clarify, tame frizz/smooth hair, add shine and volume, etc.), this would be the treatment to use.

    Hi Karen! I answered your question in the other post but will share here in case you don’t see it. I am speaking from my own experience but I believe the peroxide treatment works better to get rid of hard to remove yellow/staining. If you're trying to get rid of yellow that you haven’t been able to get rid of, that's the one to use, imo. BUT the ACV rinse has so many great benefits that the peroxide treatment doesn't offer so if you are trying to brighten dull hair or hair that is slightly yellow, along with all the benefits I talked about in the video (clarify, tame frizz/smooth hair, add shine and volume, etc.), this would be the treatment to use.

    Does it work on brunettes who are graying?

  • @GrayHairTransitionandBeyond
    @GrayHairTransitionandBeyond2 ай бұрын

    Yes it does. I have a lot of dark brown hair under the white (most of it is near the nape of my neck) and it whitens my white hair and not the dark hair. Please make sure it’s the 3% peroxide-anything stronger could lighten your dark hair along with damaging your hair and scalp.

    Thank you for this review! I love your channel & really enjoy your content. I feel there is not a lot of information available when it comes to caring for gray/silver hair & your content is very helpful. I am desperate for information on caring for my extremely fine, Caucasian, semi straight naturally gray hair. A lot of the info I find seems to assume everybody with gray hair has coarse, wavy / curly hair. More gray haired ladies need to speak up & help out their fellow silver sisters! Thank you again!

    What about WHITE vinegar?

  • @GrayHairTransitionandBeyond
    @GrayHairTransitionandBeyond3 ай бұрын

    Hello Patricia! Yes, you can use white vinegar. The reason I like to use Apple Cider Vinegar is because it has more vitamins and nutrients which is very nourishing for your hair while white vinegar doesn't provide that extra benefit. White vinegar is also a lot more harsh than apple cider vinegar so you will need to properly dilute it with more water (than what is used to dilute the acv).
