I don't use an app to help me focus whilst reading, but I do like the pomodoro method for work or other stuff I must do - and you probably already know this but I generally use Spirit City: lofi sessions or find a pomodoro method video on KZread. Even Twitch streamers who do co-working streams helps.

the two apps i use to actually start reading are storygraph & finch. storygraph because it tracks pages and i have the goal of reading one page a day at least and finch because i have reading set as a daily goal and it reminds me "oh, i haven't read yet" a bit more immediately than storygraph because i'm already on the app tracking other habits. sometimes i will listen to music as well.

It's simple. Publishers want ebook prices high to protect their print book sales as long as possible. There is no sound reason the end consumer shouldn't get some of the benefit of the reduced cost related to ebooks.

I have aphantasia. I think one difference is that my understanding of the physical appearance of a character is limited to what is actually described on the page. My mind does not fill in other physical features that are not described, as is required when you create a mental image. For example, if the book does not describe a character’s hair color, my mind would not assign one. It would just be unknown information (which is probably not important for the story anyways). By the way, it is the same if you ask me to imagine an apple. If you then ask me “What color is it?”, I would say that I don’t know because you didn’t tell me. It could be red, green, or yellow.

The science HAS been done: people prefer paper to ebook for reading, esp. when reading non-fiction. In 2008 UK researchers Jan Noyesa & Kate Garland asked "Computer- vs. paper-based tasks: Are they equivalent?" (Ergonomics Vol. 51, No. 9, September 2008, 1352-1375) & found significant differences. Reading speed, accuracy & comprehension were all degraded when consuming e-text - confirming findings of numerous quoted studies going back another decade. That's a problem, because "Many paper-based tasks used for assessment or evaluation have been transferred directly onto computers with little regard for any implications." Nothing's changed since then. In 2010 the National Association of College Stores (NACS) found that the majority (87%) of the over 600 students surveyed in their study had not purchased e-books within the past 6 months. If given the choice, just over 73% of the respondents indicated that they would choose a printed textbook over an electronic textbook. In 2011 75% of those surveyed expressed preference for printed books. Students found e-textbooks were difficult to read, annotate, and bookmark; the added friction for basic functionality outweighed the inherent benefits of e-texts. In 2012 Michigan State University English professor Natalie Phillips conducted MRI scans to monitor brain blood flow while reading, reported that the research "suggests so far is that core skills in the liberal arts have immense cognitive complexity... It’s not only the books we read, but also the act of thinking rigorously about them that’s of value, exercising the brain in critical ways.” She was especially concerned to explore the relationship between reading, attention & distraction, & noted the increased distraction imparted by electronic media. A 2012 study at Andrews University found that "Only four percent of the [student] population studied opted to use an e-textbook. The print version is still greatly preferred by college students." (Silas Marques, "e-Textbooks Usage by Students at Andrews University: A Study of Attitudes, Perceptions, and Behaviors." Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences. Paper 32.) In 2013 researchers found that students took longer to absorb text from e-text over paper. (David B. Daniel and William Douglas Woody, "E textbooks at what cost? Performance and use of electronic vs. print texts," Computers in Education, Vol. 62 (March 2013): 18-23) In 2014 Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer found that note-taking with pen & paper offered significant cognitive benefits over notetaking on a PC. ("The pen is mightier than the keyboard: Advantages of longhand over laptop note taking," Psychological Science, Vol. 25 (June 4, 2014): 1159-1168). A 2015 article quotes research by Anne Niccoli (Paper or Tablet? Reading Recall & Comprehension) quotes research by a Naomi Baron: 90% of university students sampled in the United States, Germany, and Japan said that if cost were the same, ~90% preferred hard copy or print for schoolwork. For a long text, 92 percent would choose hard copy. Baron also asserts that digital reading makes it easier for students to become distracted and multitask. Of the American and Japanese subjects sampled by Baron, 92 percent reported they found it easiest to concentrate when reading in hard copy (98 percent in Germany). Of the American students, 26 percent said they were likely to multitask while reading in print, compared with 85 percent reading on-screen. (Naomi S. Baron, "How E-Reading Threatens Learning in the Humanities," Chronicle of Higher Education, February 24, 2015.) In 2022 a small (51 students) study at Ryerson University's Graphics Communications Management program in Toronto asked students to choose between a print book or an eBook, & found most people still prefer print, as it's easier to read, take notes, and highlight. Basic functionality continues to be more friction-free; there's distracting & inefficient overhead involved in basic hygiene functions with e-text that outweighed any benefits electronic format provide. (eBooks vs. Print Books Preference Survey GCM 362 Class • Winter 2022 - stw.ryerson.ca/~r3adams/gcea/eBookSurvey.pdf). In 2024 Heather Rose Artushin summarizes ongoing research in an article in Psychology Today: - Research suggests that comprehension is six to eight times better with physical books than e-readers. - Physical books help readers absorb and recall content more effectively. - Turning pages as we read creates an “index” in the brain, mapping what we read visually to a particular page. - Research shows that, despite the prevalence of technology, most people still prefer print books to e-readers. (The Case for Paper: Books vs. E-Readers. Why a good old-fashioned book is better for your mental health. Psychology Today, 2024-02-02). ______________________________________ It isn't a generational issue Consistency in findings over the past couple of decades suggests that the problem isn't that readers didn't grow up with new technology: those surveyed in the 1990s & 2000s may have grown up with paper, but those surveyed in the past decade overwhelmingly grew up accustomed to consuming digital content from a very early age. Conditioning isn't the problem. e-Ink is better? Eyestrain issues may be finally reduced with the current increase in availability of e-readers using e-Ink. Low-glare high-contrast screens more closely emulate paper, but there's still a significant difference: e-Ink isn't paper. It offers less glare than LCD or LED screens, but there's still significant glare. There's a perceptible gap between text & overlaying screen. And not everyone will invest in an e-reader as well as PC or tablet: that effectively doubles their capital cost. Basic hygiene functions like highlighting & note-taking are VASTLY more time-consuming, fiddly & irritatingly awkward, even on the most recent generation of e-readers. And distractions on a regular tablet or PC screen are constant: a serious impediment to focus & concentration. Distraction is engineered: a war you can't win Users seriously under-estimate the challenge they face trying to maintain focus & concentration on Android, Apple & Microsoft operating systems. Software companies running the operating system, applications & search engines have all invested billions of dollars in human talent & Artificial Intelligence specifically to distract user attention & hold it. That's an unequal fight. Users who kid themselves that they can win that fight are seriously mistaken. The software platforms sell the illusion of freedom & choice; in fact they offer neither, massively constraining users' perceptions, guiding their 'choices' & breaking concentration on anything other than what's being sold. Advertisers are paying good money to grab & hold your attention, software companies have invested billions to manipulate you successfully. e-Readers & e-Ink tablets are better: the screen is better, closer to paper (but still a screen); the operating system is hacked to minimize commercially-motivated distraction. An eBoox e-Ink reader runs on Google's Android operating system, but has been mercifully constrained to eliminate the constant hacking of YOUR brain by Google's OS, search engine & apps. For now. But it's not paper. The Medium Affects the Message And I suspect there's a subliminal message to the media that affects how we perceive information presented. There's an inescapable transience about content on screens: it's ephemeral, constantly changing. Scroll down or flip the 'page' & everything's gone. I suspect that brings with it a certain sense of impermanence that affects how we process & retain the information we read. Paper has a air of permanence: a book I read 50 years ago is still there, has the same text on the same page. I suspect that influences, somehow, the way I absorb & process the information. I can read novels on screen. I prefer to do so on paper, but there are times when convenience of e-ink makes it preferable. And I can both store & access many more books on an e-Reader than I want to store on shelves in my home. OTOH I find reading non-fiction for content on a new state-of-the-art e-reader is vastly more difficult: I'm impaired if I can't do it on paper. I don't think technology improvements in hardware (the screen) or software will change that entirely. Knowledge is ephemeral now I've read books at the University of Toronto printed in the 1500s, six hundred years old. They record texts originally much older. The technology hasn't changed; they're perfectly readable (once you're used to changes in the language). My notes will be legible & accessible in 100 years, if committed to paper. OTOH there's a significant hole in Western literature & science: anything published after ~1980 was typeset in electronic format but not necessarily in a current format; much of that stuff didn't make it to the Web a decade later. There's about15 years worth of material that has largely been lost. You can find occasional lone copies of works in the library systems, but there another problem occurs. Our preference for currency & redirection of budgets to electronic services has doomed many past works. We're constantly sifting the shelves for content not accessed in the past 6 months. Doesn't matter whether it's Shakespeare or Neil Postman: if it's not been read recently, it's turfed. But there may not be a digital copy, so now it's truly gone. Vast swaths of academic work have been lost. And older scientific or business information stored in the 1970s & 80s on microfiche is similarly gone: no one converted microfiche to current formats, and the microfiche readers are long-gone anyhow. In a great many ways, as is so often the case with technology, it's a solution in search of a problem. It's VERY hard to improve on pen & paper.

Well, I can give you some hope. I retired when I was 56 years old with my main goal to just read in my retirement. Well, now I am 67 and I honestly can say that I read like a child again. I read as slow as I want and just enjoy reading for the sake of pleasure. When I worked and had all those daily duties to perform there wasn't much time left over to read even though I loved to read. If I did get to read I always rushed through it, cramming as many pages as I could. But since I retired that has all changed and I take my time and just enjoy reading. Sometimes I even forget to stop and eat. Many times I read into the early morning hours. No alarm clock so who cares when I wake up. Life really starts after you retire!

One of the books will get more time than the others but when I need a break from that main book then I jump to one of the others instead of doing something other than reading.
