I'm only a hundred or so hours in but think it's inarguable that Elden ring boss design is significantly lacking compared to other souls games, but I find it surprising that you didn't find ANY bosses particularly fun or interesting - this definitely isn't my experience. Of the bosses I've encountered so far I think Margit's a perfectly fine boss with good design. I wasn't very impressed with the original Godfried but I did think the evergaol version was pretty decent. The boss version of the guy with the telekinetic sword was also a fairly solid boss with good design.... I'm sure there's others but I'd only say MOST bosses have seriously lacking design and come off incredibly wanting, but definitely not all =/ edit: ah... should have watched more... I don't think there's any input reading that just seems to be cope from people lol, or if it did exist at some point I see no evidence of it now, and it was continuously a complaint of people in previous souls games where it most definitely never existed.... so I'm inclined to think it's just pure cope. edit again: interestingly you identify Godfried's wind attack as being a problem lol this doesn't make much/[any?] sense to me - having fought Godfried's evergaol version only a few days back - the wind attack is fairly well telegraphed, as a melee character I never had problems dodging it unless I was standing way too close and was therefore unable to avoid the AOE expansion. Additionally this wind attack is successive and ramps up significantly - which is an element of GOOD boss design - even if you react slowly and get hit by the first one it does virtually no damage and you can still get away before being hit by the second spin, if you fail then it does 'meh s'okay' damage and poise, but can still get away without taking too much damage unless you hang around for the last expansion (which I think only happens once he's below 50%) at which point you're going to have a bad time. Either way after the expansions he then goes with one of two attacks (with a potential intermediary if you've moved far enough away or tried to obstruct LOS) and again you are presented with opportunities to succeed and recoup or fail further - which is all I think quite good design, rewarding responsiveness and engagement and being forgiving with lapses so long as you're actually trying, but being brutally punishing if you're not really trying. edit again but almost immediately after the last one so it doesn't really count -.-: haven't fought the godskin noble yet just some apostles, but just looking at that expansion attack, there's a pretty clear telegraph visible to me, it hardly looks unavoidable... also how's it work with blocking? It's extremely common for them to have attacks that are difficult to dodge but easy to block and vice versa - I'd expect that this attack would push you back on the initial expansion and give you time to dodge the follow-up if you blocked... but will see how it goes for me once I get there. final edit: yeah okay this does seem unironically like a skill issue lol - especially the supposed 'input reading' complaints lol, if you're unable to tell when is safe to heal and when is not you're just not paying attention or doing decent analysis. They're not waiting for you to heal to strike, you're just being dumb and healing when they're in a position to strike lol - this is not something that EVER happens to me I know when it's safe and it doesn't take much battle experience to know when these openings are. If I get hit I know when I do it that it's a real possibility and that I'm choosing to take a risk - sometimes that risk is worth it but you're putting your hands into RNG for a favorable outcome in those cases. also find it extremely amusing that the small number of bosses I think have actually good design in line with previous games are the ones you almost exclusively focused on >.<

Have to disagree on the delayed charges. I want to fight, not a pure pattern recognition. It's completely unnatural and only possible because of the poise mechanic. A sekiro boss always had to defend themself, they couldn't just take forever to load up and tank every hit on the way. Panic rolling can still be punished. Just don't make unnaturally lonh buildups. Or don't let the enemy run into my face for two seconds straight, they should hit directly or at least stop moving if they want to execute a feint. All possible without this bs counterintuitive unnatural stuff in elden ring.

Using one of the best builds in the game(even with the dlc expansion) and then complaining that the build destroys bosses and blaming that on the game for having bad design is so absurd. There is no proper way to play the game but using an overpowered build to represent the general experience isn’t a good foundation for a video. Certain options are going to be better than others and that shouldn’t take away from what weaker builds or different experiences have to offer

I honestly can understand why some people are not a fan of how the bosses are designed in this game. I personally enjoyed most of the boss fights with some exceptions like Melania, Godskin Duo, twin gargoyles, and red wolf. My main critique with the bosses are the delayed attacks. Having some attacks that are tricky to predict is fine but omg a boss holding their sword in the air for 5 seconds is just SO DUMB.

I actually agree 100% with this video, in the past whether it's Bloodborne or Dark Souls 3, the best From software games, and Bloodborne being my favorite, there was a sense of triumph and accomplishment, they reacted meaningfully to your attacks, and when they felt unrelenting it felt like you can still find the windows to get your hits in and form a strategy, the Bosses in Elden Ring with a few exceptions are very trashy, the hit boxes are all over the place, some are good and others get ridiculously bad, as someone who takes Bosses Head on, without summons or any help I got to say Elden Ring is so weak in this department like the thrill of telegraphing your enemy and the satisfaction of finally beating the Boss is kind of absent in this game like the tree guardians of the minor trees were better encounters than the main ones, it's so strange some bosses you beat them and the feeling you get is mixed you're like finally over but there's a sour taste, like confusion, it really comes across as douchy boss design, the delayed attacks especially, you get tired of it really fast. I just don't see the fun in sending a fucking shadow or ghost or whatever to distract the boss so you can go behind them and fuck them up so dishonorably.

What I hate is how the bosses have no ressources. So many of them don’t have any consequences for misplaying. If feels like getting as many hits as possible in between a wave of combos, instead of making them make a mistake/lose stamina or find a window to punish. I think bleed mitigates this, and it’s why I think it’s so fun. It rewards you for landing those small hits and turns them into a big hit.

I don't like how elden ring bosses requires you to basically be a Jack of all trades in magic. Bosses practically expect you to be. Being raw physical based on str or str/dex is entirely useless. The bosses are a lot like pokemon in terms of weakness scaling and Less like something like elder scrolls or even some final fantasies. The magic or status effects now is a necessity to hurt these bosses. Parry and riposte is an ancient tool that requires skill is a skill that isnt admired by new players, and they don't realize how satisfying that stuff used to be from older games. After playing the dlc and even more Input reading and artificial difficulty with the scadutree fragments. The game kind of gets silly. Honestly. Elden Ring is a gateway to Dark Souls for Casual gamers. I'm getting my brother into demons souls and he's whining but he will get over it. I also think Sekiro kinda sucked imo being an invisible rhythm simulator but whatever.

Elden Ring is like playing Sekiro as a Dark Souls character 😂 Don't get me wrong, I do like Elden Ring. But the bossing isn't great. They were balanced around spirit ashes and Co-op. So you share the bosses agro between multiple friendlies. You can tell this because evergoals feel far more balanced compared to spirit summoning areas. (Atleast the ones that aren't to easy). Certain questlines are stupidly difficult to follow along. Lies of P has little icons showing you when you have something for an NPC. Elden Ring should have put icons next to sites of grace. This still allows the player to find the next place but giving them a rough idea of where it is. For example you here a wolf howling so you go back to the first merchant. But if you already bought his useful items then you have 0 reason to talk to him again. Or later blight is in a Evergoal. But nothing hints at this. You can tell most people looked at guides for this game with the achievement percentages. The hidden ending has just as many completions as the default ending. And souls veterans who played these games since Ds and DS1 are saying they looked at a guide cos they couldn't figure something out

I've beaten Dark Souls 2, 3, Sekiro and Elden Ring (I've even 100%d Dark Souls II), and I can say that bosses in this game are just bad. It pushes you to play in very specific ways, ways that aren't very fun. At the same time that it offers you plenty of ways to cheese bosses (summons, bleed), none of the mechanics are complex enough to deal with the bosses. The bosses just feel like they were made for a different game entirely.

You act like moving bosses are unheard of in fromsoft games. But there are many bosses like smough, aldrich, wolnir, bed, four kings, ds Gwyndolin, and ml butterfly where running around the arena was literally required to beat them, yet it’s a problem that malekith has a ranged attack and needs space to use it? Also you act like malekith isn’t a final boss in the game who literally wields the concept of death but you want him to have 3 slash moves where he stands still so you can roll into him over and over until he dies like what?? If you want to fight a boss like that in Elden ring you know there’s bell berring hunters, misbegottens, crucible knights, and bloodhounds to do it against. Also your saying ripostes are bad when your literally using nothing to buff them. Maybe if you were not using a pure bleed build they would be doing more damage. Also parrying is good like have you seen the fast kill strat for Margit? Maybe fromsoft doesn’t want a fire lord Gwyn situation where people end up parrying their final boss over and over again instead of actually fighting him . Don’t use a ng+ build against early game bosses and say “this is broken” when your an overleveled minmaxer fighting a godskin noble. Maybe that’s why they made the bosses have more health BECAUSE ITS AN OPEN WORLD GAME that’s easy to break, like fromsoft added so many unique items for your enjoyment and you are surprised that 1 of them is too good? There’s been broken builds in every fromsoft game yet now it’s a problem?? Also complaining about summons like they haven’t made fromsoft games stupid easy in the past is laughable. In ds1 I used a summon once on gargoyles and beat them no hit first try like it’s not just an Elden ring problem. Also random long chained attacks aren’t a bad thing it makes bosses move sets more diverse and makes it a diffrent fight every time which bosses like abyss watchers, and soul of cinder don’t have as their movers are linear. The only thing I agree with you on is bosses punish you way to often for example Margit punishes you with his knife after you try to get damage in after a combo like that’s just bad design.
