I am a mechanical engineer who started a KZread channel!
I have four main interests that I want to share with you. Instead of the standard how-to I like to take a deeper look into most things and provide an engineer's perspective.
1. Lawn Care and lawn care equipment
2. Automotive maintanence
3. Golf
4. Firewood/Chainsaws
5. Bird watching
6. Home Improvement/Appliances
You don't have to do things like I do, but hopefully you can learn something and decide how you want to do things! Freedom!

As easy it is to just pull the rope on these little motors why change it? If your motor is hard to start something is wrong with it.
Great to know. Just got my 1.5 acre mower and will be installing as soon as it stops raining.
A couple of comments, if I may. The unit will start without the pull coil assembly .... a simple piece of rope with a handle will do, all you have to do is rewind the rope a few times.. The unit already has the attachment, attached. Secondly, use your drill to mimic the speed and duration that a recoil would work at. Three of 4 sparks at a time is all that's required, you don't have to go 5,720 RPM. Cordless power tools have tremendous torque and can break your wrist quite easily. Find a 1-way socket, it has it's own clutch/// .. about $20. on Amazon. I start all my small engines with a drill, even my chainsaws... but not an impact wrench. Good video.
Not just a car jack, always support it additionally. So many people have deid because they didn't pay attention to this! 2 people in my area alone. Otherwise, markings are a good idea for determining the old and new amounts of fluid. I always like to use the scales for this (my wife isn't so keen on this because it's our kitchen scales...). You can then fill the car directly from the clean oil canister and only have to weigh the canister a few times in between. If you do this with a scale, note that liters are not the same as weight in kg (not like water!) because the transmission oil is much lighter (requires special ATF6, which weighs around 0.83 to 0.86 kg/liter depending on the type). So i always control Level before change, than i weigh the old oil and then the new one, similar to the method here with the markings. In addition, to hold enough oil pressure, it is technically better if the filter is changed at the same time (at least every other change / or with the ZF every 100 to 120tm is enough - with moderate use without a trailer). Unfortunately, this is a bit of work with this ZF gearbox, but it is necessary. The oil level should always be checked afterwards. otherwise good video, thanks, regards from Germany, Raphael
I have a Husqvarna push mower that has drill start what I do is I take a 3/4 inch deep socket and I fill it up with hot glue until about a quarter inch from the end. This way the motor won't jurk your arm.
Recently ive been feeding the birds raw peanuts instead. They like it alot and its much cheaper than sunflower seeds!
did you purchase this mower or is this a paid promotion review? also your grass looks the same after it's gone over it, which is weird. how about running on some higher smooth well grown grass next time.
I have two update videos here: Robot Mower Comparison - Luba AWD - Orion X7 - Dreame A1 kzread.info/dash/bejne/lGx5x9R9etXepLA.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/mWenr8qufqrKmto.htmlsi=8caNOZnLTqnj5nVN It was early spring while filming this video, so the grass wasn’t growing much. Sunseeker sent me the mower but they did not pay me. A paid promotion involves a cash payment.
@@TheLawnEngineer do you have one for yourself, is it worth spending this much money, yet? i feel like we're closer to getting a real autonomous mower, but my gut tells me this is still NOT the one
Very, very helpful.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the comment.
Save our in Brazil hahaha thank you so much. It worked now hahaha😂 I cannot believe it was so simples. God bless u
You're welcome! I'm glad the video helped you out.
So glad I found this video thank you very much
You're welcome.
Thank you for sharing
You bet! Thanks for the comment.
I need one of those.
It is very handy.
Excellent
Thanks for the nice comment.
Spring for a step drill bit for thin sheet metal!
Absolutely agree, I need one.
Hi there once again, you wouldn’t believe what has happened. After paying for the the twin catcher which I locate from a US seller it arrived at the eBay shipping hub in Glendale heights IL I receive an email stating the the item has been restricted and will not ship out to me😂 also will not ship back to the seller in Indiana, basically item has been hijacked by eBay global shipping. I am so pissed off as to where am I going to find another twin catcher
Oh man. Is there any hope of it getting released from import jail?
Is this normal in the states it’s not like I’m importing something illegal. Have you heard of this happening. eBay states that it’s out of there control and don’t know what will happen to the item. I have read that it potentially will go to some auction place as I have read other horror stories😆🤦♂️
@@gynot357 no, I've not heard of this happening. I've dealt with similar issues at work when managing global project but that was always industrial equipment being shipped around. It might be worth asking an import company to help but they usually aren't the cheapest.
Thank you, let you know if there is any progress cheers Tony
When I'm not using it in the garden I use it as a bidet! Nice! (It was a bad joke, sorry)
I think that was a good joke🤣. Thanks for the humor.
Love this machine but what a freakin back killer after about 600ft of curbing and sidewalk
Yeah, the battery is heavy but it does last a while. Hopefully batteries continue to improve and get lighter 👍
Young first time home owner you're teaching me so much! Thank you. How do you know you tightened to 12 lbs. Do you just feel it?
I’m glad you are finding value in my videos. You should use a torque wrench to make sure you don’t over tighten. Once you get familiar with tightening you will notice the difference between the resistance of the o-ring and when the cap bottoms out. You want to tight just until the cap bottoms out.
@@TheLawnEngineer I didn't grow up with tools so I didn't know. I just picked up a click torque wrench . Thank you once again.
I haven't tried it yet but what about tying the string to your drill wrapped around a cylinder like hole cutter
This would retain the recoil and no need to dismantle anything
I think that might work if you can get the speed high enough, it might require something with a larger diameter than a socket.
Excellent video thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Wow. What a bad design.
I believe if you are able to turn it off, you can push it manually like a normal push cart. Also, the follow feature isn't really limitied to the fairway assuming there are no obstacles between you and the cart such as a bunker or wanter.
Good to know about pushing with it off. I shouldn't have said "fairway", I meant between tee and green.
Dewalt ❤
I'm a fan =)
Good! Sometimes I start my VW Beetle with an 800W drill or an impact wrench on the 19mm nut on the alternator. It works.
You are awesome, thanks for sharing.
now to make a rope powered socket for when your drill is dead and you need the generator to charge it, good video from a smartass viewer
Thanks for adding some humor =)
Can you test anthbot's lawn mowing robot, see the introduction feels very stable performance.
No, it looks like that mower still requires a boundary wire. I’m not interested in installation of a boundary wire.
The same thing happened to my Luba. Somehow grass was blowing back under the blade deck and being compacted like a bale of hay. It was causing a raise/lower error of the deck. Once cleaned out, it worked without error.
Thanks for sharing. It's amazing how tightly packed the grass can get...great comparison to a hay bale.
Wouldn't the grass make the deck even heavier, so it could more easily lower, and not the other way around? or does the grass impede the lever mechanism somehow? The battery is the same as is used by other Sunseekers mowers it seems, and I was able to find it for sale online.
Yes the grass does make the deck heavier but it was also packed very tightly into the springs and linkage. Can you send a link to the battery you found?
@@TheLawnEngineer I can try to send it, but usually these are blocked.
Appreciate the update. Funny about the mouse but really glad the battery seems so easily replaceable/upgradeable.
You’re welcome. Yes, I was pleasantly surprised by the access to the battery.
I called Sunseeker and asked them if the battery is replaceable by the owner of the unit and they said yes. I currently have a Dreame A1 mower and Dreame said they will not allow their users to replace the battery. The mower needs sent back to them. I recently checked my Dreame A1 mower and it is possible for the owner to replace the battery. The battery is easily accessible and has your typical quick disconnect to change out the battery. I am not sure why Dreame has this policy and it is making me think twice about keeping the mower. Though I do really like it otherwise. It is interesting that the battery on the Orion looks exactly like the Dreame A1 battery and it the same voltage and Ah, so maybe I could by an Orion battery for my Dreame if needed? I know you tested a Dreame. I wonder if you could try the Orion battery in the Dreame? See if the connectors match up and the battery fits in the carpartment? Thanks for your video.
That is interesting why Dreame would require the mower to be sent back. It is not surprising that the two mowers have virtually the same battery. I’m sure these mower manufacturers are sourcing their batteries from the same company.
Where can I buy this in Europe (Norway), and will I be able to get spare parts for it here?
I would check out the SunSeeker website for a dealer locator. It might not be available for some time as this is a very new product and they are in the middle of their rollout.
Pretty sure you just saved my ass
Glad I could help.
Your video is the best when it comes on details the way you explain every steps. Will you please show us too how the proper way to add brake fluids on Pacifica. Again thank you so much for sharing your talent with us. God Bless.
I'm glad you liked the video, thanks for leaving a nice comment. Unfortunately, I no longer have this vehicle but adding brake fluid is the same as most other vehicles, remove the top of the reservoir and dump some in.
I used a 1/2" drill to start a 4-cylinder hand crank tractor engine on a 1923 Fordson I was restoring to it started while tuning it. Needed a long side handle to offset the torque. Be careful not to over torque that small nut and crack the flywheel.
That sounds like a great application, thanks for sharing.
Loved the comparison. Can I please confirm with you since you have experience with multiple different machines. Are the cutting blade shaped different between them all? is it possible to buy generic cutting blades to replace them rather than buying from different company?
The basic shape of the blades seems the same across the different mowers, but some have two mounting holes and others just have a single hole. In reality, you should be able to swap them from machine to machine without any problem.
Chrysler Pacifica owners shall we band together to get this investigated! Because rn my van shifts rough from 27-30 39-40 mphs.
I did receive a few mailers about a class action suit but I never investigated it more. I've been involved in a few and it seems like the only ones who get compensation worth anything is the lawyers.
Use a step drill!
I completely agree.
A step drill bit would have been ideal for that centre hole.
Yes, I agree.
The rope is always in place, don’t have to go and get the drill, find the socket, hope the battery is not flat. Just use the rope, that’s what its for.🇦🇺
That’s one way to look at it…if it works for you, great.
Do they sell one that can also make those 10 foot putts for me?
lol, if I found that I might not share…🙃
Ingenious. But why 2-stroke and not 4-stroke?
You can do the same thing with 4 stroke but they normally start a little easier and the rope isn’t such a burden.
First did this some 40 years ago, admittedly with a corded drill back then.
Definitely not new but new to me 👍
Let me tell you people; if that backfires your wrist will pay for it.
If that is a concern, you can use a ratchet attachment.
Unfortunately, most pull start engines don't have a center bolt but some weird three tooth assembly that is part of the clutch mechanism, so your idea will work on 1% of the small engines on the market, ie only small electric generators.
Fair point but 1% is unfairly low.
@@TheLawnEngineer It's guesstimate I pulled out of a hat. It can be 5,10% or more. I tried to do it with my grass trimmer a long time ago, but without major surgery it's "No way, Jose". Cheers ..
Would this be the cause of an oil leak on my ms381? Leaks oil into the storage case when not in use
Yes, that’s exactly what happens. I have a newer/better video here: How to fix a bar oil leak on a Stihl chainsaw kzread.info/dash/bejne/hoWe2cGHptO9g9Y.html
SAFETY GLASSES!!!
You’re right, I’ll be better
As an old machinist, I have always been aggravated at manufacturers of pull start engines for not having a hex or allen head shaft end coming thru the housing to use a drill! I hate yanking on a Stihl chainsaw or a weedeater!
That would be very handy, thanks for sharing.
Installed a bagger baffle and the hi lift blade. Mower is throwing a dust storm out in front of machine. Had to switch back to the original blade also think I am going to take the baffle off. What was your experience?
I did have a decent amount of blowout in the front of the deck as well. I assumed that is what the baffle is trying to prevent but let me know if you try it without the baffle.
yeah, works better when the drill isn't on the "Hammer" setting, hahaha
Yeah, that’s no good 🙃
@@TheLawnEngineer 😂
Absolutely a good way to ruin the generator and possibly cause major body damage to yourself and / or possible onlookers! Find yourself a teenager to pull the recoil start as it was intended!
Ok
