Welcome to Ted’s Garage!
Here you’ll find videos about my cars, motorcycles, RVs, and everything else that burns fuel. I’ve had a life long love affair with cars, and do (almost) all my own wrenching on them, having started off as a Jaguar mechanic and now just wrenching for fun, building a Factory Five Mk4 Roadster (Shelby Cobra replica) and fixing everything else that’s broken in my garage - which is everything.
Stick around and hope you enjoy!

As always good info, and well presented, are you all ready for 6Y9, i will share a link with you about my Mx costs this summer on the Journey
We are! We're looking forward to seeing you there!
Great work. I have a DDEC 3 on my 1995 Liberty Conversion thats due for this. Way above my diesel pay grade though!
thank you!
Always a great lesson Ted thanks for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
Maybe you should consider "fixing" the rear closet engine cover to allow for easy access to the engine from the top. On my Newmar I adjusted/modified the engine cover in the closet area so I can remove it in about 5 minutes. This was a real improvement in allowing me to do maintenance from the top, i.e. fan gear box oil changes and engine crankcase filter.
I had that thought as well, and it may be something I do eventually. Now that I've gotten the hang of how to get the valve cover off pretty easily, though, I probably will leave it as-is.
Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Glad to see you don't double click on your torque wrench. Many do and will argue to the death that double clicking doesn't create an over torque.
Good video. How many miles on your bus?
About 109k miles now.
Nice video man I love the sound can you please do more exactly like this one but in the next one used to Jake brakes because I love the sound of a Jake brake. Stay safe man have a safe trip. I hope all is well with you.
Ted i hope you got all the asbuilt dwgs for this rig . Enjoy 🇺🇸
Curious to know what fuel filters you use. Another great video.
I use Fleetguard FS-19624 for the fuel filter. My bus is set up with the single see-through cartridge filter, not dual canister filters.
Welcome back my man Ted! Been a while, but I'm glad you're back! Very informative video - I never knew that stuff about replacing the damper on a Series 60! Now, I don't know if you saw, but I posted a comment on the video of opening the damper from your Cat 3126 - definitely check it if you haven't already!
Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Nice vid. Really like the information you give. Do you have anything for cleaning and replacing the fuel injectors of the series 60?
I’ve used both Power Service Diesel Kleen and Hot Shots injector cleaner. I haven’t had to remove the injectors (and hopefully won’t), but I’ve got two upcoming videos that will cover an overhead adjustment and changing the rockers, which gets you roughly 80% there.
The Detroit diesel 60 series is a shaker. They are notorious for for vibration issues. Is the one thing about my Prevost that I wish I could change to a C12 or C15
Hi Ted, Thank you. Great video! Nice job, You made that look easy. You certainly answered a question I've been having. Like you, I've also noticed a very slight vibration at idle (very minor) and have wondered if changing the damper would have any effect on that. After watching your video I feel comfortable leaving it as is at least for now. Also the engine has very low mileage. Thank you once again, hope you and your family are having a great summer!❤❤❤
I've been considering the bluefire for a while now, but want to know what kind of information I can expect to get. My rv is a 1998 with 5.9L Cummins 24 valve. Is there a way to find out what the ECU will display without first buying the unit?
Thanks Ted. BTW is there a way I can get in contact with you?, I´m from mexico and I´ve a few questions for you about my endeavor 1999 36WGS.
Well done Ted. I have a 2005 Gulfstream TOY HAULER with an Onan quiet diesel 5500. Recently we dealt with hurricane Beryl. I figured the 70 gal diesel tank would last. To my dismay, after running the genny for a couple days, sometimes just for the microwave and AC, I lost Onan electricity. Odd is that I can get "shore power" fine when I plug the unit into a dual fuel portable genny. I checked the 2- 30amp breakers on the QD and reset them, I also reset all the A/C breakers in the home panel. So far I suspect the wiring block on the upper corner of the QD or the transfer switch. Most of Houston lost grid power....now 6 days. I may do as you did, and drop the unit from the coach and give it a once over. Your vid will be most useful. Only thing I would do different is use BLACK tie wraps instead of white. As a retired telco tech, we used plenty of black tie wraps which last much longer because of the black carbon content in the plastic. Second choice are the thin STAINLESS (with ball clamp) tie wraps. They are almost indestructible to heat, UV , chemical and corrosion. Visit me in Houston if you trip to the Gulf Coast.....good fishing and BBQ. Later Ted ;-)
Congratulations beautiful bus
Look under the bottom pan of the gen and see if your motor mount bolts have dropped down indicating the motor mounts under the motor have sagged or disintegrated. My bolts are about 5/8 lower than the pan so I think the noise is motor/alt mounts more than anything. I pulled mine out and did the same service but its still much louder than they where when new. Mine is a 2003 Kountry star. Thanks for the video, it reminded me how hard it is to inspect those mounts and why I didn't take a look at them.
Wow we upgraded our 2003 Holiday Rambler Endeavor . Thanks to your video. What a difference . Especially at night. Thank you. 👍👍👍👍
Glad it's helped you out!
It would be interesting to see a video when you do maintenance on the Houghton unit. Does the whole cover come off or do you unsnap the upper from the lower plastic cover? Also, it looks like the fins only on one end are exposed that would need to be cleaned.
Very good videos. Thanks for educating us. 1997 Marathon XLV (Coach 429)
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for all the Prevost videos. I have a new XLII about the same vintage as yours and they are super super helpful to understanding what is going on.
I'm glad you've found my Prevost videos helpful! I've got more coming. Let me know if there is anything in particular that you'd like to see. And thank you for your Super Thanks! It's very appreciated!
Looking forward to a video on the air leveling system
That's on the list! Right now I have a planned video on the operation of the slides and "level low" system, but that won't go as much into the specific mechanics of it (at least not yet).
Hey bud just bought an XJR and thinking about doing the trans fluid just to be safe. Wondering if you could tell us the final amount of fluid you ended up using.
Honestly can't remember, buying a few gallons should be safe. But keep in mind that draining the pan doesn't get all the fluid out, so after you do the fluid and filter change it's not a bad idea to then do another pan drain and refill after a bit to get more of the old fluid out.
Awesome vid. Thanks Ted.
Do you know of a way to clean the fuel injectors and other engine common issues?
I have essentially the same coach as you, 2001 XL2 with Millennium conversion. Been following in many of your footsteps and have a few things we have done you might be interested in. Get in touch if you ever want to compare notes and/or lessons learned. Where are you guys located / typically travel? ps - just ordered the BlueFire based on this video, thx for the guidance.
Do u have video of u actually taking it apart not skipping all the work also do u do all the work from the little dog box and big dog box
You’ve stated several times that it’s Obvious Visually that the fluid needs to be changed and it actually looks pretty good. You’ve mentioned that you come from the aviation industry as have I so can you share what in the video that you see are the indicators.
The video probably doesn't have it come through very well. But in person, you can both see the darker color of the red, and the smell of the burned transmission fluid. It was by no means the worst that I've ever seen or terrible, but the transmission shifted and behaved better afterwards.
Where did you buy this? I couldn’t find it for my ‘23 1250gs adventure. Great videos thanks.
It may not be available anymore, I don't see it on their eBay store or on their website.
@@TedsGarage You're right, it's not available any more. I contacted the company direct and they had a few left and sold me one for £179.99. They will be having a new exhaust out soon I was told.
is the oil pan gasket reusable? what about the oil pump pickup tube gasket and second tube gasket? Were they included with the pump?
The oil pan gasket is reusable if it's in good condition. I wouldn't reuse the other two gaskets, and I don't recall if they were included with the pump.
Freightliner discontinued the rear bags. I called Michigan truck springs in Saginaw MI. They have firestone bags that are a direct replacement for the XC chassis. The fronts are still made and usually inbstock at freightliner
Good tip!
Do these run continuously when on or do they cycle on and off with the temperature settings?
The compressor will kick on and off with the temperature setting. You can set the fan to either run continuously on whichever speed you prefer, or have it in "auto" mode where it selects the speed and will kick the fan on and off with temperature. Normally we prefer to leave the fan running continuously while sleeping for constant background noise.
I wish I had your workshop!
Great video. However you don't mention if the air system has to be empty or can the filter be changed while the system is charged?
That’s a good question and a good point. The air system should be empty when you change this. Check valves should keep the tanks after the dryer from back feeding but it’s better if they’re all empty. My air system was empty already.
That is exactly what I need! Any chance I can rent, borrow or buy that tool from you? I’ll pay shipping and even ship it back to you when I’m done if you need it.
That tool ended up breaking after it got used, so it’s not loanable.
No worries. Did you have to cut an existing socket even shorter to make it fit?
@@moto6193 yes I did
Thanks for your video. Short sweet and to the point.
What size nozzles are you using?
5 gallon tank, I go into the nozzles in the video
Thanks for posting. Very informative. I've got the same generator and it's a noisy son of a bitch.
Very very interesting stuff right here! Now, got a question (may be a tough one though). When a Detroit Series 60 is at idle, why is there a slight whistling sound? As the RPM's rise, the "whistling" increases in pitch as well. I've always heard that "whistle" on Series 60 engines and have always wondered what that was. I remember one of the buses (an older Prevost H3-45 I believe) from a local bus company had the Series 60, and when it was idling, the "whistling" was extremely loud, and it idled a little lower than most Series 60's. The whistling can also be heard on a Cat 3406B engine. And on a slightly related topic, how are the ASMR sleep videos with my suggestions coming along? It's been a couple weeks since the last video and wanted to check in and see how it's going! Please let me know ASAP.
Is that self-leveling sealant you used?
Yes. I have a link in the description to the sealant I used on this project.
Wondering where you got the DC powered AC Compressor and Driver? What are you using for Thermostat Control? I am looking to add AC to an electric Vehicle I am building and this masterflux Compressor looks interesting.
I bought the compressor and driver for MasterFlux. They also have a thermostat control box that you can use with a knob to select how much AC you get, but I'm setting it up as simply on or off in my application.
Thank You! this is my next direction as to checking the CANbus C connection and ground for TCM PCM/ECM no communication fault! crossing fingers
I wish I had your youth. Glad I'm not the only one that has trouble making simple things happen because they're not as easy as they would appear in the directions. You give me the inspiration to keep trying when things don't go right. 1994 Prevost Liberty Coach #270. Very good presentation. Thanks
how did you get the 3/4 bolt out of the right hand side?? Where the fill tubes and dip stick are.
I'm curious why so many diesel rv'ers are not interested in the engine parameter exhaust temperature (EGT)? I don't think there are any engines currently used in RVs that will self limit if this temperature is exceeded...I am sure my Cummins does not. Exhaust temperature is in the Bluefire list of engine parameters available so if I do wind up using this system I will include on my display. Any comments are appreciated Kevin
Hi Kevin, I definitely agree EGT is important, although on stock computer controlled diesels it's a bit less so since the computer calibration from the factory should keep EGTs in check. That can vary quite a bit, though, as I found out when I put an EGT on my previous RV. I haven't put on on the Prevost yet, and I may at some point in the future but it's not an immediate requirement. Bluefire can only display data that the ECU knows. Your Cummins almost certainly does not have an EGT sensor, so the Bluefire won't be able to display it. However, I did a couple of videos that might interest you on installing the EGT in my previous diesel pusher and then also how I lowered the EGTs (I got them down quite a bit from when I first put the EGT gauge on): kzread.info/dash/bejne/h62Op8aqkazRf8o.htmlsi=gIPTksC-12LUKLLy kzread.info/dash/bejne/aJ11m7qJqcu-gMY.htmlsi=5BjmP7KSoMDlbR4I
