The muffler on my Prevost was original, and I wanted to get a bit more engine sound out of the great-sounding Detroit Diesel Series 60. Plus it wasn't a bad idea to replace the existing muffler before it eventually rusted out. This option is significantly cheaper than an OEM Prevost muffler, and ends up not being significantly different in sound, but should lower EGTs.

I have been thinking about upgrading to this Muffler. But I have a stock ISC 8.3 with a functioning muffler. After hearing what you said, I might just skip for now. Thanks for the review.

I don't know what chassis you've got your ISC in. I put the same muffler on my previous RV (3126B in a Freightliner XC chassis) and I thought the difference was a bit more noticeable. When that muffler came off I also found out it was completely rusted through in a lot of places, so it was definitely more worthwhile there. Either way it's a good replacement option when the time comes.

I've used that Aero muffler as well as the 5" Dynomax with similar results. However, it's a fine line between sound and performance. Mainly because some back pressure is needed to aid with heat to spool the turbo. However if too much restriction is removed it can effect back pressure and therefore negatively effects EGT's as higher boost is what will lower EGT's. Many people think boost creates HP but that's not necessarily the case, higher boost without extra fuel lowers EGT's. Without having a way to measure your EGT's you're pretty much guessing. I ran quite a few tests on my ISL and by bumping my boost from 24 PSI to around 29 it lowered my EGT's approx 100- degrees on the exact same grades. Be interesting to hear your results but again, without having specific EGT's it's a guessing game. Mike

Mike, you're correct that more boost/airflow without more fuel in a diesel will lower EGTs - ultimately I think this is where most of the EGT reduction I've seen with this muffler comes from. Similarly, increasing the turbo boost (or changing to a turbo that will provide more boost at lower RPM) can reduce EGTs - be it overall or in certain areas. More boost in a gasoline engine without more fuel flow will just run things leaner and that can get into detonation concerns and other topics that get more complicated. However regarding backpressure, that does not create turbo spool or make power or torque as has been a common misconception for decades. The issue that's commonly confused is that with too large of an exhaust or headers the exhaust velocity will reduce, and that can have a negative impact on exhaust scavenging/flow/turbo spool. Again, the issue isn't backpressure, it's the flow and tuning. Sometimes if you've got too large of an exhaust to the point where it is reducing your flow and hurting your power/spool (and even then it's just at the very low end most of the time) you can get improvements in a certain range with a smaller exhaust. While that may increase backpressure, the backpressure itself isn't what is causing the increase in power or turbo spool.

Would not want to be sleeping in the back when the coach is moving or just idling (drone)

In my Prevost we barely hear the engine in the back of the coach bedroom and can't hear it in the drive seat going down the highway unless I open the toll window, which I do going down a long grade. Like hearing the engine brake working!

I replaced the rotten stock muffler on a 500hp cummins ISM powered motorhome of ours about 12 yrs ago with one of these. Still quiet in the coach, not so much outside the coach:) That must be a 45 footer. My 1996 Liberty 40XL it is very difficult to get to the connection area.

We sold that Cummins powered MH shortly after installing the XL muffler. I haven't a clue how its holding up. Bought our Prevost 10 yrs ago and its stock muffler is doing fine. It's never spent anytime in the rust belt.@@TedsGarage

I'd be curious if the decreased back pressure made any noticeable increase in HP. Lower exhaust temps probably also means lower temps in the engine compartment, never a bad thing when it's hot out.

In theory there should be some improvement in horsepower and fuel economy if there's a reduction in back pressure. On my last trip I did feel like fuel economy might have ticked up maybe 0.1-0.2 MPG, but it was definitely not enough to say for sure. No noticeable improvement in horsepower. In the end this is still about a 50,000 lb bus with 500 HP - it's going to take a more significant change than what a muffler would bring to be noticeable in this case. I figure it's still an improvement, albeit a minor one that I can't really quantify with any hard data.

I’ve had a gas burner rv for 3 years now I had liquid springs installed front and rear still rides rough on most roads. If you were to purchase a new dp with bunks which brand would you go with?

That's a great question and I don't have a great answer for you but I'll try. We ended up not test driving any other DPs before buying this. We did briefly look at and consider (but didn't drive) an Entegra Aspire, used but same configuration as the new ones. They offer a 44' bunkhouse configuration and all the input I got was that they drive and ride very well. We also liked that those had a king bed, the one thing we're really lacking on our Prevost. Ultimately though we thought we would be happier with the build and longevity of the Prevost, and I preferred having a 12.7L Series 60 as opposed to the Cummins L9 - it felt like too small of an engine working too hard.

The new muffler is way lower than the original and with the scratch/drag marks on the bottom of the bumper, that muffler is getting ripped off!
