    Ok, I discovered this particular cover via a podcast called “ The History of Rock Music in 500 Songs “ ! The author(?) of the podcast; Andrew Hickey ( a serious rock music scholar ) , is doing a two parter on “ Everyday People “. He mentioned all of the artists that covered the song, and he mentioned the seriously funky rhythm section backing ( gasp! ) THE FOUR FRESHMEN! I gotta say, I had a spit take moment! But!( and it’s a helluva big “ but “ ) damned if he wasn’t right! That is a funky rhythm track! It’s certainly a different take on it! 🤘

    Ha! Years ago I brought a friend to see Alex at SXSW and he only played these old standards, and they were wonderful! My friend just rolled his eyes. Haven't spoke to him since... 😎

    If I heard this album and had no information about the players I would swear it was Stéfanne, Django & Le Hot Club de France Quintet. Who is the Cool Cat playing rhythm guitar when Fapy is doing his Thing on this recording? Is it Fapy, Double Trackin' (à la Les :Paul)?

    Dude...We are in 2024 and as a modest guitarist for Grand Royal Tokyo, I was searching some CBS sessions recording where S. Grappelli and him had a fight because I am reading "Django" by Michael Dregni, I felt on these song and the first notes recorded here are just blowing my mind...Musicality. Dexterity added with this "je ne sais quoi" of insanity...! Thank you !

    Wow, I never knew Alex recorded these wonderful standards. I have, however, read the same tired journalism-by-numbers story too many times, with no mention of this. Thank You for posting this, it’s inspiring!

    Glad you enjoyed these. The "Clichés" and "Songs from Robin Hood Lane" albums are among my favorite Chilton solo releases. Even in his wilder years in the 1970s and early 1980s, he was known to sing a standard or two. This somewhat ragged 1981 recording of an old Johnny Mathis hit is, imho, great fun: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hoCX1ayFXZqwYqQ.html

    Saw Alex (and Jonathan) many, many times but never heard sing this. In fact, the first time I heard Alex (probably 1984 or 85) he played an opening solo set for Jonathan w/Andy Paley at Jimmy's, New Orleans.

  • @zenobardot
    @zenobardot Жыл бұрын

    Based on the setlists I've seen for dozens of Alex Chilton concerts from 1984 to 2000, he didn't play this regularly, if at all. From what I can tell, he didn't like to spring totally random tunes on his rhythm section unless they were pretty widely known and simple R&B/R&R classics like "Duke of Earl" or something. His late-1970s NYC band obviously knew this tune (maybe one of them like Chris Stamey even turned Alex on to it), and Yo La Tengo knew it (hence the later version here), but my guess is that he never ran through it with the guys he toured regularly with.

    @@benjaminlyons9676 That's very cool. I enjoyed reading about them in the Chilton biography from a few years back. Storming around North America in that 1973 Buick. And Coman and Alex playing covers at Papa Joes for World's Fair tourists who picked songs from a list on the table in the summer of 1984. What I find fascinating is that Alex seemed to have plenty of club gigs worldwide from 85-90, despite the general unavailability of the Big Star stuff and his extremely low profile from 1975-1984. I guess world of mouth kept the flame alive? I know people paying close attention to college rock would have been aware of the 1987 song by the Replacements and praise from REM, etc. but it still surprises me that this was enough to get gigs on two continents during those first years back on the scene.

    Also, a lot of people don't know that Stéphane Grappelli's first instrument was the piano. I saw and heard him play both instruments in concert way back in another century and, believe it or not, he was just as great on the 88's as he was on the violin.
