Quality Culture

Quality Culture

Welcome, we're Stef and Terrence!

We make video essays about pop culture stuff, including shows, films, music, books, and just general social concepts.

We love examining the connections between popular media and the ideas at their core. Fundamentally, all of the art we consume is about storytelling. On this channel, we try to dissect what stories are being told, and why. And we try to recognize what makes us like/dislike these stories in the first place. Hope it resonates with you, and hope you enjoy!

This show was ok for a second. It could be better and is getting better. At the very least at least a Asian character isn’t just some white guy in makeup in some cases as a stereotype character. As in American of European and minor Middle Eastern (Asian) iam not sure my opinion is welcome but I like the Asian community and support the struggle.

Nothing wrong with going wild but you can find truth everywhere. I find truth in martial arts and playing chess. It is all there if you look around.

As a Latino can’t really say much about the subject since I’m not Asian but I will say the show wasn’t that different from all the others I did like some of it was clever but the story or lack their off wasn’t good. I liked the actors I just think what the writers gave them wasn’t up to par.

If this is the best Netflix show in years they got some serious problems because it went down the toilet with about two or three episodes to go.

Maybe it is silly, but the one thing that bothered me the most about "Fresh of the Boat" was that they say they are Taiwanese but they mostly present as Chinese all the time. Like it is interchangeable.

The problem with Chris is that he wasn't prepared or skilled enough to do what he was gonna do. Had he taken a year to train with a seasoned outrdoorsman, he would've survived if not thrived. But Chris' issues really stem from his family and his alienation from them by materialism and convenience. Chris would've been better suited to live with the people he met along the way rather than die alone.

At 36:30, you mentioned that this narrowly avoids cultural appropriation, but I think that’s just sort of how the word has been twisted in popular twitter discourse. It IS cultural appropriation, but that doesn’t have to necessarily be a bad thing. We all take on parts of the culture we are exposed to unconsciously, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with that… until someone maliciously exploits another culture that they aren’t part of for their own gain. It kinda bothers me how the talk around it has simplified to the point where people will become upset for others simply integrating into another culture.

If you want to see perfect Asian representation, see Never have I ever. I know most of y'all don't consider Indians to be Asian but US census, common sense and geography does make them Asian. So please watch never have I ever for Asian representation.

I watched each and every episode of it. In the beginning when Hudson Yang used to do narration it was good. Then they removed it after 3rd season. Then it lost all its Asian-ness when Grandma started speaking English. She was last connection they had with anything Asian. Later on it just felt like a white family with Asian exterior on top of it. Also I didn't like how much Louis Huang tries to be white through his chillies competition or his western themed steakhouse. They were trying to make it palitable to White Audience and lost all Asian connection through it. If you want to see perfect Asian representation, see Never have I ever. I know most of y'all don't consider Indians to be Asian but US census, common sense and geography does make them Asian. So please watch never have I ever for Asian representation.

As a white American who grew up on the southern border, I always enjoyed and appreciated shows that showed different cultures and situations that weren't just a bunch of white people at the mall or some other basic white trope. It wasn't my normal and I don't think it's a lot of peoples experiences. I hope there are many more shows we people from every culture depicting their version of an "American dream " that is if the show is based in America, If not, that's cool too.

I would rather die a 1000 deaths surrounded by nature than 1 death in a hospital, i had a happy childhood, this world we have created for ourselves saddens me deeply, i never chose to be a part of this shit show, for me the ultimate goal is to get out and experience the real world, not the one we manufactured.

Eh. I dont see any reason to criticize or get annoyed at what Chris did. It was his life and he chose what he wanted to do with it. I think he was well aware of the risks and was willing to take them in order to break out of the restrictive society we live in. He did a super courageous thing in truly cutting all the ties that he knew were holding him back. Not many of us would ever have the balls to fully reject all the trappings of modern life to the extent he did. He died due to series of unfortunate and avoidable mistakes. Not because he rejected capitalism, cut ties with his family or decided to live in nature. It could have easily gone differently if he'd been a bit more prepared and knowledgeable. Of course every capitalist out there will try to use his story as some kind of proof that our society is the only way to survive. They have to protect their wealth creating machine at all costs. I have huge respect for Chris and his choices because from the age of 12 until now (40), I wanted to do the same thing. But I bottled out and got caught in society's trap and now I can't escape it. My life within society will achieve absolutely nothing except to leave behind a couple of new workers to be endlessly exploited for profit just as I have been. Every one of us is worth more than that.

The worst element of Suzies death was that he was not quite a stranger. He told her he was her neighbour and knew her parents. That was enough for her to trust him, and she is dead as soon as she walks toward him. If she had tried to run he would have stopped her and dragged her into the hole.

I've struggled with misanthropic thoughts and tendancies for a long time too. I actually watched Into the Wild because my grandmother told me I needed to watch it and she sobbed a bit when she said it. I'm not foolish enough to go out to Alaska unprepared for an extended stay though. I mostly just wanna do a two week camping trip with only the bear essentials. I have no grand delusions about being some kind of woodsy survival king out of nowhere but the desire does strike me from time to time. People are so often disappointing, you just kinda have to accept it. We disappoint ourselves too, some in big ways some in little ways but we're better about sweeping it under the rug because we don't like to see that it's there. I loved the video by the way, idk if my comment makes that obvious or not, resonated super hard. Also a good sign that my algo might be finally turning around.

As a Korean teenager who has lived in both Korea and America during my ongoing academic years, I can of course attest to the pressures put on children and all the other pressures of living in modern countries that only recently became industrialized and expanded. Yet as widespread as that part of our culture is, this is not the only part of our culture that should be depicted in media. The lack of diverse and complex representation in media that tries to be diverse and complex reduces unique and nuanced experiences into monotone stereotypes that while are part of an evolutionary process in trying to diversify stories in media, might do more harm than good to the cultural connotations and views of a country/culture in the eyes of the general public who is not actively analyzing media and only consuming passively.

To me it is a bit weird but beautiful to relate to this movie. As i am not Asian not even close, but some of the things like "eat more you are too skinny." "but i thought you said i am too fat." It just hits like my old school Bulgarian grandmother. Or We are a part of the family unit and should act accordingly. It is beautiful, how cultures thousands of kilometres away from each other can have these similarities in views, ways of acting, ways of showing love and care, the things they want for their children etc.. Thank you for this. Your video is great.
