    Is non detergent oil ok to use on these fans? Also thank you for showing me how to clean mine

  • @TheSuperFanMan
    @TheSuperFanMan2 күн бұрын

    No problem! Yes, non detergent is actually the right type of oil for sleeve bearing motors, including most household fan motors. Detergent oil collects debris over time and clogs up motor bearings. Detergent oil is great on systems that circulate the oil through filters, such as in engines, but not so great on unfiltered lubrication systems such as motor bearings.

    Do you recommend this fan for a room with no AC and with 1 sided window? Alernative options? Im currently using a Taotronics tower. Hawaii summer humid weather😂

  • @TheSuperFanMan
    @TheSuperFanMan3 күн бұрын

    I’d say it depends on the dimensions of the room. If it’s small (under ~10x10ft), then this would be fine, but it’d be underpowered for larger rooms. If you’re looking at Dreo products specifically, they also have larger models that should perform much better. This might be an important factor since the fan will be your primary source of cooling.

    So let's talk about oscillating fans and air circulators for a minute, they don't lower the temperature of the air they're moving they just move it, so if you're not in the path of that moving air you're not getting ANY of the benefits of it's operation, so what's the point of letting it oscillate around the room into areas you're not sitting in because that's a waste of electricity and will benefit nobody..makes no sense.

  • @TheSuperFanMan
    @TheSuperFanMan5 күн бұрын

    That’s true, but: - the moving air often bounces off nearby walls and ceiling, so the user will still feel the airflow. Some people prefer that sensation over a direct breeze. - If the fan is being used in conjunction with AC, it’ll help distribute the cool air evenly around the room. If the fan is way underpowered for the room dimensions, then yes it would be a waste to have it pointing away from the user since there would be no air being bounced back.

  • @malibustacy3606
    @malibustacy36065 күн бұрын

    @@TheSuperFanMan Funny you should say that, because the idea of using the air conditioner sparingly and using a fan to circulate the cooler air it's produced around the room has gained popularity with me 40 years later, I couldn't get the room cold enough 40 years ago and now I couldn't possibly be comfortable in a room under those conditions...the problem..too many birthdays.

    i did this to 3 Aerospeed box fans recently. They didn't seem to require as much disassembly as yours. One of them started squealing and slowing down so I took it apart and oiled the bearings, decided to go ahead and do the other two so they don't get to that point. I packed grease over the open parts of the bearings cause I don't really know what I'm doing, but I figure it'll hold the absurd amount of oil I put in there better if I do. Haven't noticed it splattering anywhere yet at least and they're all running just as fast and quiet as ever. Might've been a mistake to do that though since I saw somebody say that mixing lubricants can cause them to form tiny balls that can impact the performance eventually. We'll see 🤷‍♂

  • @TheSuperFanMan
    @TheSuperFanMan3 күн бұрын

    I don’t think there will be any catastrophic lubricant failure, but premature deterioration is possible. In my early days of fan collecting I’ve unintentionally experimented with mixing oil and grease in fan bearings lol. No noticeable harm was done but eventually I cleaned out the bearings and oiled them.

    Nice fan! I love the GE loop oscillators. I'll hazard a guess that when it took the tumble that trashed the cage, the blade was bent beyond repair, thus the replacement. I agree with other comments that the brass blade looks good. For sure the set screw is incorrect. GE set screws have no head, just a slot. I have a restored 60559, which is the D.C. version of the 75423, the 12" cousin to your fan. Mine is a bit older, with a brass blade and badge and steel cage. It's always nice to see what other antique fan enthusiasts are doing.

  • @TheSuperFanMan
    @TheSuperFanMan3 күн бұрын

    Thank you! Your theory is very plausible. The tumble was probably responsible for the busted oscillator gearbox too, and the owner just cut off the exposed motor shaft rather than repairing the gearbox. That’s awesome, I haven’t seen many DC GEs. Can’t beat brass blades! I actually have a GE 75423 from 1924, which I really want to finish servicing since this year is its 100th birthday!

    Great video. Here's a tip about loosening screws. Before you try to loosen the screw, give it a twist as though you are tightening it. You should hear a tiny 'click' or see the screw move very slightly. The lock has now been broken, and you should be able to unscrew it without difficulty. In the event that a screw (or bolt) starts to feel like it's binding, just tighten it a little bit and then continue to loosen it. If it's been on there for a long time (especially bolts), you may have to repeat this 'tighten/loosen' process several times. An old car mechanic taught me this, and it especially works for rusty bolts or screws. If it doesn't, then you'll need penetrating oil or heat or more leverage, etc, but 9 out of 10 times it works great!...
