    Thanks for sharing this. I purchase this laptop in mid 2024, the 4080 version is now around 2000usd. The 2024 version cancel SODIMM socket and make the memory capacity limited on 32G, which makes it not that flexible. And this laptop might be the best generation of the G14. Also, asus released a 4070 14 inches zenbook which might be the perfect design of G14. Just get furstrated by the 2024 generation laptops. LOL

    I hear ya. The 2024 is a beautiful premium machine, and I do think that form factor is ideal for the 4060 and 4070. And obviously OLED is gorgeous. However, I never had an issue with the 2023 build quality or screen. My humble opinion is that it is far and away the best g14 generation ever.

  • @ktbpylon
    @ktbpylon23 күн бұрын

    In synthetic benchmarks like Timespy, yes. But in practical game performance, very little. Even with the m16 vbios or the scar one, the drivers don’t seem to be able to utilize the additional wattage. Plus, you get the negatives of the usb4 port no longer connecting DisplayPort directly to the Nvidia card. If it was just an increase in power, that would be awesome. But because the vbios is across models, you get weird quirks that really don’t make it worthwhile.

    @@spacebarwasd9782the temps honestly didn’t jump by more than a few degrees. There is something wonky with the g14 that prevents it from utilizing the additional wattage, even with a 150 or 175w vbios. There is a workaround with custom drivers and disabling certain Nvidia features, but again, the increase in timespy scores didn’t translate into game fps increases. I just know that I tried the m16 and strix scar vbioses and while Nvidia control panel showed 150 and 175w, games never took advantage of it regardless of asus or Nvidia drivers. I have the 16 inch model and its constantly overheating. Gpu is always hitting the 87 C limit and never reaches its full potential. Cpu is always around 95-100C while gaming. I dont understand why. Some people with the exact same model get better temps than me. Ambient temp is like 76F and i prop it up 3-4 inches and i always use turbo when i game. This is unacceptable for a 2200 dollar machine. Its 5 months old and played in a near dust free enviroment. I didnt wise up in time to return it so im kinda upset as it has amazing potential. I ordered a coolind pad so hopefully i can use the full 175 watts of the GPU. Good video.

    I’m honestly chalking it up to poor Liquid Metal application. Thats the only explanation that makes sense. I’ve spoken to people who have this exact predator 18 model, and their temps are all over the place as well. If you’re still under warranty, you can absolutely send it in for RMA and have them properly apply the Liquid Metal - or you can do it yourself if you’re feeling brave. I’m not saying this is right - you should NEVER have to do surgery on a new $2k laptop to make it useable…but it will probably make a big difference.

    First of all - thank you for your video! I was doing something similar to my Lenovo Legion Pro 5. You were wondering, why the CPU boost disabling has almost no effect on games FPS. That's because most of games don't utilize CPU at first place. Most of the time a GPU is the loaded one. Also this laptop has Top mobile ryzen 9 processor, which is very powerful at it's core clock without boosting. It is also important to mention that nowadays CPU manufacturers will add features like aggressive boost just to squish a few more points from a benchmark paying much higher power consumption and temperatures. I managed to keep my Lenovo legion pro 5 up to 55 degrees with all tweaks and also dead silent for programming. It is also almost silent and very cool while gaming. If you want to better understand an implication to your laptop, you can download HWINFO and track sensors. In terms of CPU, you need to observe core clock, wattage and temperature. Then you can play with the settings and just observe how these change to get the best values. I would also recomment you to downvolt your RTX GPU using MSI afterburner. You can find a lot of guides and videos about that, it's not complicated, but you will definitely optimize your GPU temperatures having the same performance.

    Nah, I'm pretty happy with the 2023. The 2024 is VERY sexy with all metal body and OLED, but it definitely takes a step back towards content vs gaming. Jarrod did a review video, and the 90w 4070 is close to last place in everything. Which is fine - if you're looking for a gorgeous and thin all metal laptop with an insane oled screen and 11 hours battery life, but can also get by in a game, it's a great choice. I guess that's my problem, though. The 4080 version isn't big - it's still a 14" laptop I get 9 hours of battery from, but also has a 4080. I think it's a definite sweet spot between portability and power. If you really want an OLED that is less bright than the 2023 and a lot less powerful, the 2024 is it.

While I obviously love the 4080 in the g14, I do think the 4060 model makes more sense - the 60 and 70 max out at 100w effective, and a 14” thin and light is a great place for that. This is just anecdotal, but both the 4060 in the legion pro 5 and the 4070 in the slim 7i feel like they perform about the same, if not slightly less, than the 4080 g14. My only guess is that a 125w 4080 (usually 115w) leaves a ton of potential on the table. Again, I love the 4080 g14 and have zero regrets. Hey man great video and just subscribed. I'm still debating between this and the Asus Zenbook 14 pro 4070 (still weighing the pros and cons). Can you please send me the links to the vbios upgrade just to have in the backburner in case I get the g14 and need to future proof it in 4 years. Thanks.

  • @ktbpylon
    @ktbpylon10 ай бұрын

    That’s a tough one, because the Zenbook is a solid option! Honestly, as much as I love the 4080, I think a 4070 makes more sense in this smaller form factor. For the vbios, I can get you links, but you wouldn’t be able to benefit at all from it. The extra wattage isn’t used, and it messes up what ports can display video.

    @@ktbpylon If you could send the vbios links that would be great I already know the risks but I'm a tinkerer so curiosity would kill me. As for deciding between the g14 and Zenbook both have heavy pros and cons with the g14 having better performance and battery life while the Zenbook has a better screen in 120hz Oled, build quality, sd card, touch. The deal breakers on the Zenbook that makes me lean towards getting the g14 is no vrr, the 8gb vram not being future proof and the Canadian version of the Zenbook not having touch. Very sneaky from Asus as the price is the same as the US msrp and you have to look on the specs list in detail to notice it. Still even with the current discounts $2999 on the g14 and $2500 on the zenbook is steep, but both would be nice upgrades on my reliable Legion 5 2060 (115W).

    @@todoroki4418 I’ll get those links up at some point today or tomorrow. For what it’s worth, the g14 build quality is incredible, the non-mini-led screen is still over 500 nits and beautiful, and the 8gb vram really only matters at 4k right now, and 1440p in the future. My daughter has a legion pro 5 4060, and she’s running Starfield on all high at 1600p at 45-60 fps.

    Much appreciated! I'll be posting another video tonight, showing ideal settings and performance in Starfield, and I'll talk about this in the video, but I noticed something. The G14 can perfectly handle any game you throw at it, but Starfield brings it to its knees thermally. With settings at ultra and at 1600p, the CPU temp stays around the low 80's, even with the tweaks I mentioned in my video, while the GPU is mid-high 70's. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, but I found that my G14 completely shut down mid-game twice while hovering at these temps. I don't know if it's Starfield-specific, or my particular laptop has a lower safety power off threshold. Note that this was with the optional 280w power supply and simply elevating the laptop. I picked up a used IETS GT300 to test, and with the same settings, am down to the low-mid 70's. I also switched back to the original 240w power supply, because the laptop wasn't exactly drawing additional power for the GPU with the extra space. Running the game at medium settings has the laptop as cool as a cucumber, around the mid 60's. So far, this is the only game that has caused such wild swings in temps depending on the graphics settings. I can't confirm if the different psu was the cause of my shutdowns, but I suspect that was the issue. I'm curious if any other G14 owners experienced similar issues with the game, but the radio silence on reddit leads me to believe it was my stupidity in buying a different psu.

    I went with the 4080 because I wanted some more horsepower for AAA games (like Starfield). I heard a lot of hate for the 4070 over the past few months, but here’s a little perspective - it’s between a 3070ti and a 3080 at only 100w. And has frame gen. If hardcore gaming isn’t a big priority for you, the 4070 would be awesome.

For me is important battery life and no heats and good for gaming. And not to Big! Thats why i always looked for g14

  • @ktbpylon
    @ktbpylon11 ай бұрын

    I mean...I'm loving my 4080 G14. I picked up a used Asus 17" portable monitor, thinking I'd want the extra real estate, but I prefer the G14's native screen because it's so bright and sharp. I even use an external keyboard, so the screen is further away from me, and it's been perfect. Ultimately, it will come down to personal preference, so I can only speak from my perspective. When it comes to heat...I mean, both the 6800s and the 4080 model get HOT. I have tweaked mine so it idles in the high 30's/low 40's, and it peaks at 80 degrees during intense gaming, but it still gets warm. The WASD keys on the 4080 are cooler than on the 6800s model for sure. In terms of battery life, I think the mini-LED will get worse battery than the non mini-LED, but I could be wrong there. With my tweaks, I'm getting just over 8 hours of casual KZread/web browsing. The 4080 (or all of the 40 series G14's) have a couple of advantages, like 16gb soldered (the 6800s version only has 8, so I was running around with 24gb ram and it drove me nuts) and a slightly better webcam. My last comment is that the 4080 in the G14 is obviously faster than the 6800s, but from a purely anecdotal perspective, I don't notice a huge difference between the two in games that I play. I will go to my grave stressing that the 6800s was one of, if not the best laptop GPU of 2022, and it disturbs me that more people aren't talking about it. It is an absolute beast. For you, you'll have to make the decision for yourself. I stick with the 4080 for future proofing (12gb vram) and Frame Generation, but the 4060 gets frame gen as well.

  • @ktbpylon
    @ktbpylon11 ай бұрын

    That's a tough one because I bought it used off of Facebook, but the model is the Asus XG17ahpe. There were a ton of others on Amazon, but they don't have the response time of the XG17. One exception, if you can find it - look for a 16" portable monitor with 1600p 165hz (NOT 1440p 120hz). There are some no name manufacturers using the same panel as in the Legion 5 pro/Legion 7 for their portable monitors, and it is a FANTASTIC screen. The keyboard I got is an Asus Azoth, which is a great little keyboard but absolutely NOT worth the insane money I paid for it! You definitely should run this laptop lid open, as the heat in part escapes at the top of the keyboard. I might be wrong on this, but the G14 needs to be open at all times during operation. @@julijanlj.9195

    I have a big desk, with a main 32" monitor in the middle, my XG17 in portrait mode next to it on one side, and my g14 on a stand on the other side - I actually prefer it open. As for closing the lid, I've been doing some Reddit reading, and have discovered that it would be a bad idea for anything above very light browsing - some of the main heat is evacuated out along the top of the keyboard, and while I think these vents are exposed when the lid is closed, the area along the top next to the power button gets VERY hot under load. I'd rather not risk it! 🙂@@julijanlj.9195
