    Damn. Talk about precision ax chopping. Incredible work, well done. Making things by hand with your own skills is slowly but surely becoming a lost art when we can just by a plastic piece of shit for 3 dollars. 🙄

    As one who is just getting into the whole wood carving and especially green wood I'm encouraged to see what can be done with less wood. I understand the concept of having enough to put a comfortable crank in the spoon. My wife on the other hand sees the waste of traditional carving. So, I will be showing her this video. Cheers!

    How important is it to bend the billet before carving?

  • @SylvaSpoonvideos
    @SylvaSpoonvideos2 ай бұрын

    If you're going to steam bend, I've had more success bending the full billet than a carved spoon, but feel free to experiment.

  • @Clark42EoC
    @Clark42EoC2 ай бұрын

    @@SylvaSpoonvideos with my little clothes steamer and steamer box I couldn't get the billets too bend at all, however the wood I used was bone dry to start. I was able to successfully bend the carved spatula, though I broke a few before getting my pressure just right. Turned out beautiful but no one bought it so I gave it to my grandma as a gift.

    Could i use raw bees wax melted down for carved wooden spoons?

  • @SylvaSpoonvideos
    @SylvaSpoonvideos2 ай бұрын

    I wouldn't recommend it, just because of beeswax's low melting point. It'll melt off in most hot food.

    *moments earlier* Do you like Huey Lewis and the News? Their early work was a little too....New Wave for my taste. When "Sports" came out in 83', I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a 'cool, crisp' sound and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.... Maple Log: "Is that a raincoat?" Yes, it is. In 1987 Huey released this, Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think I heir undisputed masterpiece is “HiP To Be Square,” a song so catchy that most people probably don’t listen to the lyrics. But they should because it’s not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It’s al~ a personal statement about the band itself. Hey Maple? (Splinters fly as the hatchet falls onto the unsuspecting log)

    Will oak ash maple apple cherry trees work? For making wood utensils like butter knives wood and Woden spellias and spoons

  • @SylvaSpoonvideos
    @SylvaSpoonvideos7 ай бұрын

    Any of those will work. Personally I don't use oak. It's ring porous, so has quite big pores, which tend to absorb liquids. But if you seal the wood it's not a problem.

  • @SylvaSpoonvideos
    @SylvaSpoonvideos7 ай бұрын

    Yup, I'm doing everything with just tools, no sandpaper. For a few reasons, 1) I don't enjoy sanding 2) I can get a smooth finish with just sharp tools and 3) with tools you can create crisp lines, sandpaper rounds everything, which can look nice and soft, if that's the look you're going for.
