Curious Cat

My name is Cat and I talk about books, writing, and other random things living rent-free in my neurodivergent brain.

Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought her back.

    Ahh thanks for the tag!! This is fun! I have a few tags lined up but I will definitely get to this at some point! I am totally with you on Jane Austen. I have read almost all of her books but I just.....don't like her books. I do love Dickens, though. He's one of my favorite authors. 😂 CoHo has been very hit or miss for me. I've read a handful and really enjoyed a couple and really didn't enjoy others. I don't plan to read any more at this point, but....I'm not ready to say never. Same place with horror! I have such a vivid imagination and things can really get stuck in my head.

    Non fiction is not my thing, but I've been getting into it this past year and I find myself loving memoirs. They're very profound, and you do learn quite a lot of other people's life. I recommend 'Last words from Montmartre' by Qiu Miaojin, is a set of letters sent to a former lover after a very torrid and tragic affair; it is not a memoir, but there are many parallels between the author and the character, the translator note delves in that and I found it very interesting

    This is so true for me as well, I’m so bad at celebrating good things! I’m getting better, I think, but the worry and doubt creep in so fast. I also think it’s a fear and shame thing, or like not wanting to lose face in front of other people. If you don’t go all out celebrating, people won’t know how big of a deal it is to you and so if you lose it, it’s not as embarrassing or you don’t have to explain to a bunch of people what went wrong or how you failed. The ones who matter will celebrate with you and support you if it doesn’t go well, but I read somewhere that loosing face is one of the biggest things for people, like it’s such a strong force, and it made me see that everywhere I look. In negotiating for example, if you can help the other person adjust in your direction without losing face, then you win 😅 that sounds so cynical with that example, but when we have good news we kind of negotiate ourselves out of celebrating. So if we can find a way to save face I think that helps! For example saying beforehand: whatever happens, let’s celebrate now! And then you don’t have as much face to lose

  • @Curious-Cat
    @Curious-CatАй бұрын

    That's so interesting about losing face and how that might impact how/when we celebrate :) Also, I'm not saying throw a big party for a new job you haven't sign the contract for yet, of course XD Just don't go the complete opposite direction either of "they offered me the job but as long as it's not signed, it can still go wrong so I'm not going to even acknowledge that I did well getting to that point and that I'm happy about it". In a way, it'd be a good exercise to celebrate even just getting invited to interview: you don't know if you'll get the job, but you can still let yourself be happy about advancing to the next stage :) Let's make it more of a habit to celebrate milestones, not just finish lines!

  • @ellenmadebookclub
    @ellenmadebookclubАй бұрын

    @@Curious-Cat Absolutely! I don’t mean throw a bit party either, there are so many ways to celebrate, big and small! 😊 But it’s still like an external expression of what matters to you, and that makes you kind of vulnerable, or takes vulnerability… or both..? 😂 I think you get what I’m saying haha It’s like saying this is where you can hit me so it hurts. God that’s depressing! 😂 Of course we should celebrate! Milestones, finish lines, and just doing the thing! I get so pissed when people say that “young people these days get a medal for trying”. I don’t need a medal, but saying good job after giving it your best effort doesn’t cost anything. And saying that to yourself is just as important.

  • @Curious-Cat
    @Curious-CatАй бұрын

    Yeah, I get it. I think it's definitely a valid point. And at the same time, it means we're killing our own joy so that others won't. I find that even more depressing ^^' It makes me think also of how nervous I was to talk about my writing on KZread, IN PUBLIC, because what if I drop this project, never finish it? What if it's just awful? The potential for embarrassment and huuuuuumiliation XD (I'm glad I have such a small channel - less visibility if you fail) But what then? I just hide it/part of myself? Isn't that even a surer way to fail? Totally with you on 'saying good job'! For some people, finishing the race, even if in last place, is already a win.

  • @ellenmadebookclub
    @ellenmadebookclubАй бұрын

    @@Curious-Cat Yes! Omg yes. Killing our joy so that others won't. That's so dumb. To do, I mean. And I can definitely relate that to youtube as well, and I don't want to grow too quickly either ^^ I'll get stage fright! That's why my goals are not numbers or performance, my goals are to grow as a person and have fun, and only I can control that. And having fun is then the same as winning. I think it was this winter so not ages ago, but I worked forever on this puzzle and then I couldn’t find the last piece!!! So incredibly annoying! On a brand new puzzle. Anyways 😅 I loved hearing about these books. They are not something I would have picked up, but especially Gone sounds really good. What a shitty thing to do, to steal someone’s instrument and livelihood. Ugh. And I’m the same with picking an interest, and I’m jealous about that too - and at the same time I’m not! Because I get bored with things, the idea of just having one thing makes me kind of panicky haha 😅 it’s frustrating to not be able to deep dive into things for long enough to get really good at it, but also, it’s really fun to try new things 😊 So… might as well enjoy that part of who we are and let the one-noters be jealous of us! So many great thoughts, I remember having a lot of the same feelings and thoughts doing the Artist's way. And I still struggle a lot with finding the balance and knowing when I need to push through and when I need to rest. Especially as I have not taken time for fun for so long, it's very difficult to know what a good normal is, like where is the baseline for things. I also love letting myself do bad work and having that mindset that it's part of the journey, no matter when or how I do it, that bad stuff is the step to the next thing. And that sometimes it's not as important to make it so great, it's more important to get it done or to just be doing it, and having that practise and routine. And I think the same goes for morning pages, I don't always do them anymore, which I would like to back to, but I don't force three pages if I don't have them. It's more about giving myself that time to listen to myself. If it doesn't come out on paper, that's fine too. The time and reflection and the listening to yourself is what I think is the most impactful. It made me feel like my thoughts were important, whether I wrote them down or not. And yours are too, even if they go really really fast :D I really enjoyed listening to your reflections. I think spreading the last week out is a great idea.

  • @Curious-Cat
    @Curious-CatАй бұрын

    Thanks for your comment and sharing your own thoughts :) I also have difficulties with making time for fun. I like Gretchen Rubin's distinction about different kinds of fun: relaxing fun (the easiest one, requires no effort, like watching TV), accommodating fun (mainly about spending time with other people) and challenging fun (which requires some planning and/or effort, like learning a new skill - it's the most difficult one, but also the most rewarding). I feel like I have too much relaxing fun and definitely not enough of the challenging one ^^' The distinction helps to identify the problem, but I need to put more effort into solving it XD

  • @ellenmadebookclub
    @ellenmadebookclubАй бұрын

    @@Curious-Cat Omg honestly, when I'm writing comments sometimes, I think it's a couple of sentences and then I see it again later and it's a whole essay. Especially when I relate, which I did to what you were talking about! I really like that distinction, I've never heard that before, but makes sense. I also easily get stuck in relaxing fun (tv), but rarely properly enjoy it, just end up feeling guilty. So then I go all in on the challenging fun, like planning for a million videos and then getting overwhelmed and got no rest XD Isn't there a middle ground where you're doing something so it's active but not learning? Like the miniatures you did or other crafty things? I feel like life should feel easier than this! 💜

  • @Curious-Cat
    @Curious-CatАй бұрын

    @@ellenmadebookclub Ahah SAME with the comments XD Also, I see you're up late too ^^' For me, the crafty things would fall more on the challenging fun side, because you need to get the materials, set things up, and even the actual doing might require some learning. It'd be a different kind of challenging for me than "practicing a language" where I basically could just have to pick up a book from my shelf - it's challenging intellectually, but not as much in terms of planning or set-up. But with my burnout, even reading a physical book (vs an audiobook) feels like challenging fun nowadays (which makes me a bit sad). I think it's probably not entirely separate categories, but definitely more like a spectrum. My favorite relaxing fun is doing a jigsaw puzzle while listening to an audiobook, but it requires a bit more effort than just watching KZread. Maybe that's your middle ground? :)

  • @ellenmadebookclub
    @ellenmadebookclubАй бұрын

    @@Curious-Cat Thank you, that makes me feel a lot better! 💜I get so self-conscious about it it's not even funny! I mean it is funny, and then it's anxiety XD Oh, I am never up late, I go to sleep at a decent hour every night! 👀 I see what you mean with the setup, that is a whole thing. And I get it, how things are suddenly challenging. I'm in the process of figuring out how I'm doing too (not great) and I have trouble reading simple instructions and things like that, or planning things which is usually what I'm good at. I think a puzzle and an audiobook at the same time would make my head spin 😅 But it's probably a good idea to find those things that keep you/me/us entertained enough without taking to much energy. I like walking and listening to an audiobook, that's simple enough :)

  • @Curious-Cat
    @Curious-CatАй бұрын

    Oooh, glad if this helps! Honestly, I think most KZreadrs are just glad to get comments, so there is no reason for you to get self-conscious about it - the vast majority of people would just be grateful for your comments, and the ones that aren't just don't deserve them. Ahah right, me neither - I haven't seen you, you haven't seen me XD I'm sorry to hear things aren't going great for you at the moment. And the year of less sounds like something I might like, I would really like to simplify my life a bit. Great answers! I'm not sold on this whole nature writing thing though 😆 I love nature and I enjoy gardening, but I can't imagine anything more boring than reading about someone else gardening! I like watching people work in their gardens/homesteads etc on youtube, but I would never pick up a book about it. I'm very happy for those who enjoy it though, I don't know why I don't. Or maybe I just haven't tried it properly... I don't know, we don't have to love everything! I did love this video though! 🌸🌸🌸

    What a lovely day and such a cozy video. I love anything shiny too, those notebooks are beautiful! I love getting lost in little crafts like that, I’ve never built a miniature but I get the feeling, and I need some more of that in my life. I’m really not filling my well at the moment, except for reading and booktube which is fun, but that crafty feeling where the world disappears… I need that. Enjoy Circe, loved that too! And Parable of the Sower is on my tbr for June or July as well!

    I try to make more time for crafts like pottery, painting, etc. But damn, this miniature is IN-TENSE ^^' I've been building roughly one piece of furniture per month, and it takes a big half a day each time (which is also why I don't get to it more often). The only miniature I had built before that one is the book nook that appears in my Booktube Newbie Tag video and that one was super easy to build. This one feels much more advanced. But I'll finish it... at some point XD

    I have waaaay too many books added to my tbr and don't know which ones I'll end up reading. But so far I read two short novels by Korean authors: Nowhere to Be Found by Bea Suah and Walking Practice by Dolki Min, as well as On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong, which I really loved. I had been in a reading slump for years and got back to reading a month or two ago thanks to audiobooks. I'm not sure how long I'll be riding on this wave of crazy reading before I crash but challenges like Asian Readathon keep my dopamine hungry ADHD brain happy and still going. Also, I live in Warsaw and Tajfuny is my favorite bookshop <3

    Love this series and that you include the ups and downs. For me, when I’m struggling on a project, it sometimes helps thinking to think that all those struggle moments have to happen at some point, so having them now is still progress. If I’m at a struggle point in the project it will still be a struggle tomorrow, if I skip it today. So like… that time spent being stuck just has to pass and it’s just a matter of getting through it. Not sure if this makes sense but 😅 anyway… was it a spider? 🕷️ Looking forward to seeing the artist day, that sounds lovely!

    I do basically no editing and upload straight from my phone and it still takes ages to make things sometimes. Smaller channels are the best, I don't really like bigger channels because you can't interact with them, commenting on each others videos and getting to know people is the best part of booktube and is also the best way to get new subscribers in the beginning. The I'm So Annoyed tag is my biggest tag ever too, people love that tag.

    I agree with every single thing you said and am very much in the same situation! Newbie, introvert, doing it for fun and it’s great! 😊 And the classroom is the way I see it too. My only advice to you would be to get an external hard drive, if you want to save your material and project. It does add up quickly! I have a bit of experience with editing from before, but it’s like the more you learn, the more you want to do, and so it goes faster over time but it takes the same amount of time, if that makes sense 😅 I’ve been subscribed for your channel for a while but I haven’t watched that much yet, I got a good vibe from you and have so many channels (small ones) that I want to get to know. This has so much great advice! Every time I have used music recently, KZread has told me I am violating copyright! Ugh. I’m so glad you have already learned so much. Predicting video success is still quite difficult - for me at least. 💛

  • @Curious-Cat
    @Curious-Cat2 ай бұрын

    @@booksimnotreading Interesting! If you use what's under "music" in "audio & video", my understanding is that it's lifted from your own library (the music app on your laptop), so there is no guarantee that it has free copyright. Hope that makes sense and sorry if I'm explaining what you already know 😅 I do use iMovie to edit too, but I just jumped in there and started playing with it so maybe I do it in a weird way? 🤣
