Mark I wish I had 1000the the knowledge you have and 100the the equipment. It's so nice watching a skilled tradesman at work. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us. Love the channel and the videos. One last thing ,you must have the patience of a saint to fix stuff so complicated and time consuming, I would have kicked this thing into touch, after the first 5 minutes.

Just a word of caution when checking for shorts between transistors and heatsink. The aluminium oxide on the heatsink sometimes blocks multimeter probe from penetrate the metal below, therefore shows open circuit. The sure good approach is to touch the probe on any steel screws that is already attached to the heatsink. That will be more reliable way to check for short.

Mark, does that power supply not incorporate multi-turm pots? There is one other thing that puzzles me. When you suspect that one of two identical chips is faulty, why do you solder the suspected faulty one back in when you do the swap? If you just solder is the supposed good one into what was the 'faulty' channel and it works, surely you've proved that the other chip is faulty and you would still have a vacant set of pads ready for the new, replacement chip to be soldered in. Just a thought. Maybe I'm missing something.

Hi Mark, I have a Yamaha PSR740 arranger keyboard that has a built in floppy disk drive that now doesn’t recognise any disks inserted into it ( comes up as “Disk needs formatting” even though the disk has midi data on it. Do you fancy having a go at fixing it? It also has a fault on the mic volume control which I’ve tried to fix by installing a volume control on the back of the keyboard. It dates from the mid 2000’s . Cheers John B

They're beautiful brutes of amplifiers. Many years ago I repaired one of these that had suffered a "thermal event" that blew up one of the sides. It has a very nice safe operating area limit circuit that limits the output current near zero volts. This will prevent the amplifier overheating during normal operation with a blower passing considerable air over the cooling fins. The amplifier in question was being used in a practice room and the fans were turned off since they were noisy. This would have been OK, as the power out was probably around 10 watts instead of its usual flat-out front of house duty. The speaker wire was a bit dodgy and shorted out. The safe operating area circuit would have prevented any damage, had the blowers been running but... The thermal switch on the heat sink only lights up the over-temp indicator and doesn't shut the amplifier down. The output stage and the output drivers were all blown up. After the repair, I installed thermal switch buttons on the heat sinks to prevent this recurring.

I had a fair share of such repair attempts. Most of the time I ask the customer if they want the amplituner back with just the "amp" functionality, bare minimum, and most of them say "yep", so I just disconnect everything that is not related to the amp/preamp or power supply, and add an "AUX in" functionality. But it's sad to do such a thing, only because the IC that died is no longer being made, and it has to have proprietary software on it...

Look I'm nowhere near the expert electronic technician you are, but I definitely hate anyone who pulls apart a device and does not have the skill or the forethought to save the right screws. Love your skills, love the videos, a great knowledgeable channel. Keep up the good work. Very watchable channel.Love the background stuff.Maybe the last person did not bother to save the screws because he or she deemed it unfixable.

Nice shop. What are the approx. dimensions? I didn’t know you did projects other than electronic ones.👍 I have a piece of hardboard (not sure of the UK equal - Masonite?) on top of my bench. It’s held in place by screen moulding around the perimeter. When it gets destroyed, it’s an easy replacement.
