The Electric Mistress Repair
Mark repairs a 1979 vintage guitar effects unit, which features a super rare Bucket Brigade Delay chip - the Reticon SAD1024. It doesn't go well, and did Mark get scammed???? FAKE component alert!

soldering skills say this is no genius. also why does circuit say copyright ralf metzger, and nobody notices the breaches of IP.
Watching People actually manefacturing stuff instead of buying or outsourcing is awsome!!!! please more!!!!
Before this channel, you couldn't easily find it all together in one person: knowledge, charisma and sensibility. Mr Mark, you're all of those things, your channel is one of the best here and I look forward for more from you, sir. Well done!

Is there no end to your talent. I’m very impressed with your efforts on this one Mark.
Etching your own board, finding a functioning chip replacement. You're a beast Mark , thank you! I've been watching your videos for the last several evenings
Just what every electronics workshop needs, a test strat.
I can build and troubleshoot electronics, and I have a lot of fun with it. However I can testify that Mark is on a completely other level. Great to witness this proficiency. I am also impressed with the cheerful easygoing attitude. Cheers Mark
Ahhh Mark, I have to go to bed ffs! Oh well. 30 minutes less sleep can't hurt.

@monsieurtechnical it's not his fault anymore now, of course I fell down the classic youtube rabbit hole 😁
The fake chip has marks on top showing the original top surface was ground off. The half moon indicating pin 1 is also shallower than normal. Amazing effort rolling wire to make flat pins!

Not as consistent but an iron strip and a hammer will also do the trick. But Mark's way is more elegant and professional.

@@tim0steele I'd have just made them longer and soldered them into a vero board, them solder the pcb on the other side of the legs, and snip off the legs to the right length. But to each their own of course. Mark's skills are top notch.

That’s why I loved fault finding as nothing quite replaces that buzz you get when you switch something on after a repair and it works ! It takes a certain type of person to be a technician. It’s addictive lol. The more complicated the repair the bigger the buzz. At nearly 70 I can’t do delicate work anymore due to trembling hands and it’s so annoying, but I still have all the test gear !

@peterhyams6824 Just a thaught....... you could consider teaching a youngster who wants to learn, and he/she could be your hands? Im sure you could still get work if thats your profession, as mentoring someone is as though you continue your work through someone else, and eventually you could hand over your business to that person who would continue to provide help to your community 🙂 ?......
“Night after night, who treats you right?, Baby, it's the guitar man”. 🎸
Any other technician would say " irreparable", but not Mark. Greetings from Brazil.
Подумал - Сашка Лаэртский, ан нет. Но когда в конце заиграл на гитаре - засомневался ) Спасибо, вы очень крутой спец!
Never seen handmade pcb's before - I've just been educated AND entertained! Thanks man, you're a modern day McGyver!!
It’s always a great day when Mend it Mark uploads a new video. Thank you!
Glad you liked the T strippers! Ideal entered the market with abrasives for DC armature maintenance and branched out. Glad you got some nice sounds out of the Mistress.
Any machine you don't have?.... lol Thank you Mark for letting us walk along with you on these projects. Sorry about the fake chips. Really enjoy watching you work your magic. Thank you from the US!
The SAD1024 is virtually unobtainium. They sound great for guitar, though. I've made a pop-in replacement using more modern chips, as have others.

They're obtainable, just not at a pricepoint that's comfortable for people who don't really, really, need them.
Only honest hard working people get scammed. Sad. But, good news is, your video's are popular by enthusiastics, you do a great job, keep it up!
The counterfeit market makes things super frustrating! I loved that you made your own PCB for the replacement.
to align all the legs before soldering them you can use a spare socket and press the legs into the spare socket and then solder all the pins at the same time.
I didn't know you could play the Guitar,a bit. - Greetings to the best electronics Craftsman, We see you often.
As usual - very clever and resourceful repair. I think I might have added a power light as a bonus.

A 12 volt led doesn't cost the eart, and a hole isnt that akward to drill with a "splodge" of glue 😂😅😂😅😂
Hi Mark, as a fellow engineer from Walsall I just wanted to thank you for the enlightening videos ,keep up the good work, every day is a school day 😆👍
Wow solid work! 😀 Lovely bringing a device like this back!
I used to work in a small music store in the 90s, and I had to deal with very similar repairs as this one. To be honest, I would have just hard wired the different chip with jump leads. Crude, but effective. I like your way better.
That was hot. Takes me back several years when soldering every day
Brilliant, I started 40yrs ago as a pcb process engineer, that was genius…
... and you're a muso as well! I'm more impressed every day Mark 😆 Possibly the most impressive tech repair channel ever mate, love your work!!
Nice! And be careful with fake components. I Know a guy who had bought 8 voltage regulators from the famous Chinese website for use in a pre amplifier. Four of them were dead straight out of the box, the other four stopped working within a few weeks after the amp was in use. After that, he replaced them by genuine ST branded regulators.
Fantastic video. Well done. Mike Matthews would be proud!
Great save using the SAD512 on a custom PCB. I liked the flanged minor sevenths too.
Omg, nice guitar! This was a fun episode.
That really took me back to my CDT lessons, I loved making printed circuit boards like that 😊
Remember buying one on these NEW!! Absolute cheap rubbish! extremely noisy! Nice work Young Mark!
One of the most involved music videos I've ever seen.
The guitar was the cherry on top of the cake!!
That old peddle has a nice warm sound to it. Your nice little modification board was the most interesting bit of that process. Nice work. You have a lovely workshop, it would be interesting to do a little mini- tour of it in a video one day. BTW - I love your guitar, lovely colour.
watching you work your magic, i regret not getting into electronics when i wanted to, as a young electrician apprentice. Now im just a sparky, but playing at fixing amps as a hobby, learning from you at nearly 50. Thanks Mark
11:12 Thanks for the great tip of floating the non-drilled single sided PCB on the etchant!
Awesome video as always. Electrician for over 20 years and those ideal strippers are the only ones I will use. Always bugs me to see electronics guys use crappy strippers.
my main interest in electronics is audio..guitars, pedals amps, mics, preamps, mixers..love these ones
Jasus! As always an amazing repair and engineering work Mark. First time I’ve seen you play, no end to your talents. You’ve opened up a big can here Mark with your work around. You’ll be bombarded, I’d like to jump in first, will you make me one of those boards for my HH Clockwork Concubine, I’m on my last 1024A Might try buy some 512s as spare. Keep up the brilliant work. Thank you Trev
Wow, last time I did this was probably 40 years ago ! You rock!
Brilliant! Love watching your repairs - its the chuckle that's the icing on the cake!
What an absolute pleasure to watch somebody who actually knows what they’re doing 😎 Shame you’re maxed out with work, Mark - I’d love to send my old EHX Deluxe Memory Man in…
Im so glad i found this channel. Please more of these. So cool.
Chip straighteners? Who knew? That was really interesting Mark, even though a lot of it was over my head🙄Nice Strat BTW
This man tools. Seems to always have the right machine for the job.
felt so bad for you mate when it turned out those chips were duffers but you have a really positive personality. I'd like to be more like that, it's a better than feeling annoyed all day which is how i would have reacted😊
I've watched many of your videos Mark .. and there's always another bit of kit! Wire roller ... chip straightener - awesome
Gday Mark, bought a Caps set for my amplifier and a supplier from bulgaria, was fast and all looked fantastic, until I sent a pic to my brother who got the same only to be told by his elec tech they were fakes. 😢. Disappointing when you expect something for the money. Just as well we didn't get them soldered in! Enjoyed watching you vid. Cheers from Tasmania Australia a long way from Bulgaria!
"F**k! That was hot!" I love it!
Mark, Thank-you for your response on your Cats name! I just started watching your video's and now I can't stop! So interresting. I have those wire strippers myself, Their awsome! I live in the United States, In a small town in Northwest Ohio Called Maumee. So your vids reach far and wide! Keep up the great work! Mike Z.

Electronics , chips chops and licks what's not to like. Excellent Mark enjoyed this a lot. 🎸🪛🎖
There's nothing worse than an Electric Mistress without a flange. I love watching your board making process, lazy people like me use those online companies to do it for them 😄
I've got a late 70s, Mistress (the 2x9v) version that I got as my first ebay purchase back in 2004. Sold as "untested". When it turned up no sound. I found a pedal repair guy who thought the same as me that the SAD1024 was dead. Luckily the only issue was one of the 741s had died. He replaced it and it was good. I really needed to get that pedal down from the attic to test it as it's been 10-15 years since I last plugged it in
Yeah magic Mark time!!!🎉
What an amazing fix. Putting in a chip that was not part of the original design.
Great work again. And didn’t know that you can play guitar as well.
Way to go! You could market those SAD512 breakout boards!
Who would know that one of the most involved repairs I've seen you done would be of such a simple circuit! Always a pleasure to watch your vids Mark
I'd be amazed with myself with 10% of Mark's skills
You are a pretty incredible dude. You've reignited my love of electronics, that is, the knowledge of each component, identifying circuits. Keep up the good work.
Respect, this brought me back some solid memories of lessons creating boards using nasty chemicals, awesome!
Haven't seen that pedal in many, many years!
Musical Mark Mends it. Well done ! 👍
Amazing video with so many twists and turns! Let’s make a PCB and get the Strat out
It's fascinating to watch you repair things, thanks for your videos !
You are something else wow. Not only can you fix most things, you can play guitar too!! Wow! I'm subbing!
Love your craftsmanship and cheerfulness!
Was hoping to hear abit of Rush at the end! 😅 Alex Lifeson used the electric mistress on ‘The Trees’ and i thought it sounded so cool… why I still own one of those pedals 😎👍🏻
Fantastic repair - top notch work as always. So glad I found this channel. Keep up the great work!
I also prefer a big blob of (once) Blue Tack on a table to those Helping Hands wobbling high on air.
Well done sir ! I’ve also had the pleasure of buying fake chips . Always disappointing. And the sad part is they weren’t even that expensive of a chip or very rare to begin with . Just never know what your getting anymore!

Super video. I loved the PCB fab and Circiut design!
loved it all and the guitar solo, excellent stuff mark thanks
Those two smaller caps looked a bit dodgy too, was surprised you didn’t replace those too.
From start to finish a brilliant video and your tooling is nuts!
Multi talented, very impressive. Thanks for the great videos Mark. Keep 'em coming.

Fantastic work Mark, keep the vids coming 👍
Awesome work Mark, brilliant fix.
Always enjoy to watch Mark working, so good working methods, cool tricks.
Analogue systems have zero latency apart from intended delay. That is a major asset. It comes at the expense of noise.
Your process for making these videos is spot on. I can't tell you how much I enjoy your work, Mark. The breadth of gear you cover is awesome I can honestly see you going a long way!
You've just got yourself another subscriber. Very informative and interesting video. Gonna binge watch the rest of your content. Nice work.
Awesome work mate, really enjoying your show. Cheers.
