I'm Canadian. When I was 15 years old, in 1983, I bought a punk compilation called "Burning Ambitions - A History of Punk". That's when I first heard "Stranded". I was blown away. I still am. Punk was New York, then London. The fact that a band from Brisbane inserted themselves into the conversation was incredible.

why did they never get the recognition they deserved? They were definitely one of the forerunners of punk, yet all we hear about are the usual names!

Probably the most underrated band to come out of the 76 to 77 years they released this masterpiece before the pistols put out anarchy. And they formed in 74.

Dont call them punk. Ask Ed. They were around before punk existed. The Sex Pistols copied their music through their manager, added 'edgy' lyrics, and suddenly became 'punk'. They can have it, this is just great Aussie music

Earlier tonight I watched the excellent rock doc "Blood and Thunder: The Story of Alberts", the Aussie publishing and production dynasty that gave Australians a rock tradition of their own. On a wider note it presents the artists of the Australian rock canon. The tough-as-nails character of the Aussie people is linked to the wreckless and rowdy, youthful exuberance of Australian rock and roll. This distinctively rough and primal nature is something I previously had failed to consciously realize. Once pointed out, this feature is undeniable. It doesn't just introduce itself; it walks up and socks you in the jaw. From the swinging 60s and later arena-rock eras, through to the burgeoning of punk and beyond, Aussie sounds exhibit a rougher edge and an extra jolt of attitude. The Saints illustrate this to a T! Music from the UK, and that made in the US to some degree as well, is made less menacing by its clever and arty nature. It's like a teenager slumming on the weekend. Aussie rock, in contrast, is his incorrigibly juvenile-delinquent cousin. It never loses its edge. I think that's why The Saints are so exciting to this day and why people commenting here, myself among them, still react so strongly to their music.
