@@ken2ny4 Thanks for the reply. It does seem slower than the concord, ruby red, and other common varieties of grapes. I got some small, dormant muscadines vines from a nursery online, but they still have not budded leaves after many weeks. Any advice on salvaging them? I cut the old wood back, and it was dead inside, but the nursery said the roots may still be alive.

Hey there! I'm giving growing muscadines a second try (they died the first time because i kept messing with the soil and pinching off all the leaves). I just planted 4 new ones last month and they're looking good so far. One thing I'm not too sure about is mulching. New to muscadine and grapes, in general. I ordered a Hall variety and intend to put it in the ground (bare root plant) as soon as it arrives. I read that the seeds are edible. Is that true? Also, with a 20’ trellis, how much weight can I expect? I’m going to use 9 gauge wire and 2 - 8’ 4x4 posts buried 30” in a sunny spot in my backyard. I’m in Fredericksburg, VA (coastal plain, Zone 7b). Any advice for a seasoned home gardener new to grapes? Thanks!

My problem with Asian pears (other than Xinjiang, which have partial European and partial wild ancestry) is that they lack aroma and usually lack acidity, making them glorified water chestnuts (crisp/crunching, sweet, but boring). Does this have an aroma or at least acidity? I have heard Hosui (may not be blight resistant?) has a bit of butterscotch or caramel to it. Better or worse?

  • @ken2ny4

Asian pears aren't compatible (without a foot+ of compatible European interstem, such as OHxF # hybrids used as rootstocks, also Warren and a few others) with Quince, which is used to graft compatible European pears and loquats. "Pyrodwarf" is a supposedly dwarfing Pyrus (pear) rootstock, but I have never seen it sold. The various OHxF rootstocks are at best semidwarfing. You'll need to summer-prune to control size.
