Definitely adding The Right Move to my TBR! My favorite contemporary romance author (at least I think she's considered contemporary romance) is Mimi Matthews. And the book of hers that I think you'd love is The Work of Art. It's my absolute favorite of hers.

Thank you for the recommendations 💙💙 Because I am physically incapable of recommending only one book, I have three: Present Danger by Susan Andersen is an older romance, written in the 90s but I read my first copy so many times it fell apart and I had to buy a second copy. Alone with a Soldier by Barb Hendee, which I didn't realize had so few reviews. I loved this book. I thought the author did a fantastic job packing lots of emotion into less than 200 pages. 738 Days by Stacey Kade, which will break your heart but is so worth it.

I’m not even sure editors know what they’re doing anymore. I love indie authors and I’m willing to cut them some slack, but I agree that if you expect people to pay for your work, you owe it to your readers to offer a good edition. And I believe that a basic motivation for good writers is an interest in the possibilities of language for conveying meaning, not just signalling a vague direction. I’ve just read a Facebook ad where the author described her heroine as a “no-bars-hold” character. Surely you’d look at the phrase and wonder why it made no sense? I’m sure she meant no-holds-barred. Unless the character had something against bars, I suppose. 🙄That wasn’t the only error in a single paragraph. The struggle with common idioms is real. 🤦🏽‍♀️You can turn your nose up at, someone or look down your nose at them. You don’t look up your nose at them. Someone has it “in”(store) for you; or you can have it out with someone. They don’t have it out for you. I’ve read all of these multiple times. I’m not even going to give a try to books with those sorts or errors in the blurb, let alone the text. I should probably not get started on the abandonment of who as a pronoun referring to a person. Or the nonsense which is “you’ve got another thing coming”. I’ve been reading a lot of old school writers lately, and the comfort of good editing is profound. It shows respect for the craft of writing and the time and money by the reader. But I suppose if readers don’t care about grammar as long as there’s spice, It’s a lost cause.

I do not think you were being overly picky re. your comments of Quicksilver. If there are aspects that pull you out of the story, then they are reasonable critiques! There are a few categories that always pull me right out of the book, and incorrect word choices is one. Another is blatant spelling or grammar or punctuation errors. Slang that has its roots in modern real-world, and makes no sense to be in the setting of the story. And then also when items that need modern technology to be produced are in the world of a fantasy book that makes no sense being there. ie. ballpoint pens in a fantasy world without running water or electricity. Am I nitpicking? Maybe to someone else who doesn't notice these things themselves. But to me, these make a considerable impact on my immersion in the story, and therefore, my enjoyment.

I really liked Quicksilver, all kinds of feels for that one. I read a lot of indie stuff on KU and I don't have a problem (any more) glossing over grammar mistakes and the occasional wrong word as I know how easy it is to miss stuff in a manuscript, even after reading it carefully multiple times (and rye/wry is hard to catch as spell check won't flag and they sound ok in your brain so they're easy to skip over when editing). Fisher is hiding stuff and I liked where it went :) I'm quicker to DNF it I can't take the writing voice. There's a lot of overally cocky/smarmy female heroes these days, more so in the urban fantasy genre, and they're getting tiresome so I've found myself dropping those more often.

🧡🧡 The frustration that comes with books that get popular because of the "spice" is so real. If you are up for a closed door fantasy romance, I would suggest the Elven Alliance series by Tara Grayce. Fierce Heart is the first book and it starts with a marriage of convenience between a human and an elf. I enjoyed Tara's exploration of what a society as long lived as elves might look like and what they might expect of their people. Tara also explores themes of betrayal and PTSD healing.

@@crystalsbookishlife I hope you love it, if you choose to read it. 🥰 As extra incentive: the series is completed and on Kindle Unlimited. Tara just started releasing a next generation series this year. But the first series is decently long at 6 full length novels, 1 companion novel (Elf Prince), and 2 short story collection novels.

@@catb3173 Oh, which Vanessa Nelson series would you recommend to start? I have Outcast by her listed on my GoodReads as a "Fiction Looks Interesting" title but no one I know has actually read any of her books. I don't mind a slow burn romance, so long as the characters are interesting and the author doesn't abuse the miscommunication trope ☺

    - try her Grey Gates series, the first is outcast. Her books are very focused on the heroine’s journey, so the romance tends to be light-on. But she’s a lovely writer, not afraid to let a story unfold in its own time. Other writers worth the effort. Thea Harrison - start with her collection of tarot novellas. I think the first is Moonshadow. I love her writing so much. A bit lighter, but inventive and so enjoyable - Annabel Chase’s Crossroads Queen series. Charlotte English - she has lots to choose from, but her fantasy Regency romances are delightful. I think the first is Wyrd and Wonderful? I’d check for you, but my internet is so unreliable that if I leave this comment it might drop out before I finish. Also Sarah Painter - her new series starts with Ward Witch. Jacquelyn Benson’s Victorian paranormal series which starts with Fire in the Glass are delightful and romantic. Also Kristen Callihan, who is better known for contemporary, wrote a terrific series of historical paranormal. Highly recommended - although quite a lot spicier than any of the above.
