I completely agree with you, that this way to hold the pick is the best one. Another advantage point in my opinion is when you try arpeggios using both pick and fingers (middle and ring finger), this way gives you much more confort and fluidity…

I have been doing exercises for a couple weeks, was feeling frustrated so I looked up a couple videos, and your explanation about the switch nailed it. I have been trying to lift my finger only a couple mm's and been stressing my hand to do so, causing my hand/fingers/arm/shoulder to tighten. It was seeming impossible, I've only spent 5-10 mins on it, but it feels more natural and i am being more successful. It will take time, but thank you.

My sloppiness is that my strumming hand/arm does not stay level with the instrument, it kinda bobs toward/away from the instrument. I tried resting my hands on the strings behind the bridge, but it makes things worse and constricts me more than it enables me.

Thanks for your video, and I totally agree. I‘ve been noticing recently that my index finger sometimes hits the string before the pick while picking mainly on downstrokes. I even have a little irritation at the base if my index nail when I play for a longer time. I’ve realized that this makes me missing strings, especially when I play arpeggio, as I hit it (or another just next to it) with my index. Has anyone a piece of advice ? Is it a question of too much angle while picking or not enough pick sticking out? Or is it something common? Thanks for your help!

I just realised that when I play 3 notes per string all 3 fingers are still down before I go to the next string. I wonder if this is why I am not seeing the speed increase I should be getting. I can play pretty fast like this, but nowhere near where I should be. I am going to slow it down and see if I can move my index finger to the next string before I get to the 3rd note.

You sir are a true teacher: I dub thee 'Professor.' Years ago I started an adult beginner and I asked him if he would like to hear me play. He said, "I'm not concerned about how well you play but rather how well you teach." It was then I realized the great wisdom of that statement. Your students are lucky to have you for a teacher, Professor! 😀👍

What I'd like to see is how you play Paul Gilbert riffs with directional picking because they've probably been created in mind with alternate picking

I am SO glad that I made the switch from strict alternate picking to directional picking. Yes, it was definitely a rough transition for several weeks... but eventually directional picking began to feel as natural as alternate picking used to, and now my playing has gotten WAY better than it ever could by staying with alternate picking.

Hi Tom, thank you for the video. I have switched to directional picking as my main technique, but I do also use alternate picking depending on the situation. It would take too long for me to explain, but it involves changing directions very often when playing certain licks, string skipping, hand synchronization or just playing specific patterns depending on the number of notes you have to pick on each string. Alternate p. has a certain pattern to it as well which is helpful because at high speed you depend on your feeling sense, and picking down up down always means that for 1 motion you get 1 note played while with directional it could be 2 or more, so in a sense you are required to keep count🤷🏻‍♂️. This messes up my hand sync a bit. Switching to directional was a bit frustrating at times because there was a point where I could no longer play alternate, and were not great at directional 😆. I had to re-learn how to play some things I already could before, but to summarise switching to D picking has helped me on many levels!
