I'd rank The Dead Zone as my favorite Cronenberg film. After the extreme body horror of his previous films this was a refreshing change, as well as being among the best adaptations of a Stephen King novel. It's a sad and sombre story that could have gone very wrong with a lesser director. He turns John Smith into a truly tragic character who has been cursed by this "gift" and is destroying his life both physically and personally. My only quibble is with the performance of Martin Sheen which goes a little over the top at times and looks more comical than menacing, however in light of the political landscape in recent years he starts to look more plausible. Christopher Walken gives a truly stunning performance, quiet and understated, and when he explodes with emotion it catches you off guard. It's nice to see Herbert Lom give a non villainous role as the doctor trying to understand John's "very new or very old" powers. The scene when he phones his mother whom he was separated from during the war is a very touching scene. Anthony Zerbe is good is his brief appearance. I love this film a lot. It's one of the saddest horror movies ever made. My feelings about Crash are still mixed. I highly recommend reading the J. G. Ballard novel. It's even stranger than the film, if that's conceivable. I saw it when it was first released and like many Cronenberg films it lingers in your head as you try to make sense of what you've just watched. Dead Ringers truly freaked me out. I vividly remember exiting the theatre after watching it and feeling so absolutely disconnected from the world around me for a period of time. I remember the scene when one of the brothers (by this point they were indistinguishable) is shaving and had the feeling that he was going slash his throat open. I knew a woman who was so disturbed by the film that she swore she'd never see another film starring Jeremy Irons. I imagine the gynecological aspects of the story would have a deeper effect on female audiences than males, especially when he introduces the tools to used on "mutant women." My primary issue with his films is that they stop just as the story is getting started. The first part is just a prelude and gets us acclimated to this bizarre world that sort of resembles our own and then gets steadily stranger. But then it abruptly ends. This happens many times, whether its Scanners, The Brood, or Videogame ( to name a few) that have a coitus interruptus visceral response. It's like a weird dream we're having that we are rudely snatched away from by some external source (i.e. an alarm clock). Only The Dead Zone feels like a complete story and breaks this style.

I'm working on exploring more of the world of cinema, so my four favorites may change over time. Except for my number one spot. That will always be Toy Story, which is my favorite film of all time.

I'm rather fond of the Brood. It definitely felt much more engaging, original and complete than Existenz, which definitely felt like a watered-down Videodrome (which is my clear favorite among the ones I've seen).

I might be a bit biased as it’s the film that got me into Cronenberg, but Scanners is a B for me. What it suffers from is emotional detached characters that just come off as wooden. But the story is better than the Cs listed. Fun note: It’s got what might be the first ever “hacking” scene committed to film, when the main character hacks into a computer network with his mind via pay phone.

Well “Mother!” was Darren Aronofsky, and “Beau is afraid” was Ari Aster, so what lesson were they hoping to have learned exactly? Anyway, Beau is afraid was fucking phenomenal and I’d recommend it to anyone. So was Mother!

Everything I felt about TÁR now just started to make sense now that you called it a ‘kind of horror film’ I went to see it 3 times in theaters last year (each time a couple months apart from each other), since it only came out here in march 2023, and I loved it so much, one of my favorite movies of all time. But every time I saw it, I could not stop thinking about it for a month straight and got kinda anxious when I thought about it. Just like I do with scary films I bought it on dvd after seeing it for the second time and it has just been sitting on my shelf for a year now cause I can’t get myself to turn it on, almost like I’m to scared to do that I truly understand why they call it a psychological thriller, and why you call it kind of a horror film It’s a film that haunts you
