'Do not expect too much from the end of the world' and 'Inside the yellow cocoon shell' were shown in the Belfast Film Festival and I missed them. Will they be shown again? Maybe not. My favorites - Blue Jean, Oppenheimer, Joyland (Pak), 20,000 species of bees (Sp), Housekeeping for Beginners (Maced), The Beasts (Sp/Fr), Lakelands, Paris Memories aka Revoir Paris(Fr), Full time (Fr), Rodeo (Fr). Next best - R.M.N. (Rom), Cairo Conspiracy (Egy), Infinity Pool, Alcarras (Sp), Cassandro, Maestro, Femme, Stolen, Reality, Air, Fair Play, Lies we Tell, God's Creatures, Robot Dreams, Birth/Rebirth, Pamfir (Ukr), Hunger Games - the ballad of snakes and songbirds (seems out of place but really enjoyed it). Poor Things, American Fiction, The Zone of Interest, All of us Strangers haven't been released in the UK yet. Tar, Till, The Whale, Marcel the Shell with shoes on, Drunken Birds(Can/Fr), Babylon and Broker (Kor) only made it to the UK in 2023 - all very good.

Long ago you were roasting my Letterboxd profile and saw a list I made about Romanian cinema. Now Im pleasantly surprised to find out a Romanian film was your #1 pick of this year!

@@CinemateqConnect Sadly no. I was so busy with work and health this year, Im not sure I managed to watch 15 movies! I checked and its no longer running near me, but I'll keep an eye out and Im sure I'll get to it. Radu Jude is actually my favourite Romanian director (maybe tied with Mungiu). You should check out "Bad Luck Banging/Looney Pr0n" as it has his specific type of humour. I also love "I do not care if we go down in history as barbarians". It's a very heavy-handed movie and afterwards I had to think for a few days: Is it a masterpiece or a piece of shit? Even though I knew I had fun, I was conflicted about the way it tackled some issues. Then I said to myself: I cant be too harsh with the film, reality has even worse, more blunt and stupid people. And then as I thought that, I overheard an old lady sitting on a bench yelling to her emigrated child over the phone: "Shut up with your democracy! It's brought us only bad things. Stop it with your foreign stuff and believe me when I tell you something cause Im older". Also The Happiest Girl in the world was his feature length-debut and it hits so close to people who grew up in a culture where having a child is first and foremost, a safe net for old age.

@@CinemateqConnect I finally saw this film today and I was blown away! Its in my top 5 Romanian films of all time and Im still thinking if I should bump it up from a 9 to 10. There were certainly a lot of cultural references that enriched the viewing experience, but only if youre Romanian or familiar with Romanian culture. In a way it made me realize I might underappreciate foreign films just because I dont pick up on many things.

I honestly don't think so. It's going to be a film in five years where we all sag "hey, remember that movie? The Paul Giamatti one? It was decent"

@@CinemateqConnect see I think that’s a lot more true about Barbie. People love cozy movies and the holdovers is gonna stick around like sideways did

@@Borderlnd imo Barbie was too much a cultural event to ignore over the long term, especially when you consider all of the records it set and how it "saved movie theatres". The Holdovers might have become a low key favourite if it was released years ago, but there is so much content out nowadays that I think it's going to get swept away in the churn.
