    I like your dough/pasta board, I’m over here in Scotland, I generally make charcuterie boards. Mainly as a hobbie, but have been asked to make a similar board that you have made yourself. I also noticed that old Diamond Back Mtn Bike in your workspace must be a 90’s model with that paint design. Happy wood working.

    No specific plans - My only constraint was the height and width of the cabinet. I used red oak (the interior shelves are 1/2 thick and the exterior is 3/4 thick.

    How do you maintain it?

  • @calvin.cooper
    @calvin.cooper8 ай бұрын

    I recommend cleaning the board with a damp cloth after each use. Every few months you should add some mineral oil and beeswax (I sell board conditioner or any cutting board conditioner from Amazon works). This helps keep the wood from drying out!

    What a beautiful bed. A lot of woodworkers who are picking up the hobby get disheartened by not owning a table saw. You showed them that although the work would be a lot easier. There are other ways to get things done. I respect that. I’m my experience I’ve had a head board split because of wood movement. I had used dominos instead of dowels but the same theory applies. I would suggest what I’ve done to fix that issue. Secure it using dados cut from router. Use dowels on the top plank only and left the middle and bottom plank float freely. But hey, if it works. It works. You might not even experience this. But it’s good to know a work around I guess

  • @calvin.cooper
    @calvin.cooper Жыл бұрын

    Thanks! yeah having a table saw would certainly make things easier. Good point about the wood movement - I will monitor it to see how it moves through the seasons. I like the idea of fixing the top plank with dowels and letting the bottom ones slide in a groove (like a sliding dovetail dado). Il incorporate that in the next version!

    Good workmanship, good video quality, and good results. Cannot ask for anything else. I get the impression that you would enjoy working with more hand tools. Have your thought about adding some planes or spoke shaves to your tools in the future. A small lottery win should give you all you need. A good woodworker to check out on what you need would be Rob Cosman on which ones to start out with.

  • @calvin.cooper
    @calvin.cooper Жыл бұрын

    Thanks Andrew! I have a small block plane which I use frequently! I have yet to invest in more hand planes (but I plan on it). I really enjoy Cosman's work and his workbench design with back tray and dovetail corners was inspiration for mine. At the time I didn't like the shoulder vise but when I make another bench I will include one. I will keep an eye out for some handtools. I think a spokeshave would have been very handy for this project.

    @@calvin.cooper I have a large number of planes. If I could change things I would not have bought so many Lie Nielsen planes even thought IMO they are the best. IF you learn how to sharpen planes like Cosman most planes will serve you. Woodriver would be my top choice because they are not to expensive. Then Lee Valley's Veritas planes are close behind Lie Nielsen in quality. My last advise sir. Keep on woodworking.

    I'm curious if the opposite gran direction of ends caused problems.

  • @calvin.cooper
    @calvin.cooper Жыл бұрын

    It does not. Im assuming your referring to wood expansion. The board is designed to allow the wood to expand through the seasons. The reason for the side peices on the ends is for aesthetics and helps keep the board flat over time.

  • @timrenaud8673
    @timrenaud8673 Жыл бұрын

    You glued the biscuits that were cut larger in place, thus locking them in place and not allowing the wood to expand.

    for the sides (lips) - what size board did you use? are they 2" Thick or did you stack/glue boards?

  • @calvin.cooper

    the part that sticks up (lip) is a 1.25 x 1.25 inch piece that is glued along the edge to allow it to catch on the side of the counter. I also used 2 screws hidden under some wooden dowels to hold it in place

    Thank you for the great instructions you provide. I really enjoy your videos. However, I have a question. How do we weather proof the sides which back up against the back wall. I’m anchoring my shed to the wall of my house. I have a brick veneer house, but the concern would be the same regardless of it being weatherboard or brick veneer. My concern is when it rains directly in that area (back house wall) or when the wind pushes the rain in that direction, it will rot out the back wall. Does anyone here have any ideas or suggestions to deal with this? Thank you guys in advance 🙏

  • @calvin.cooper
    @calvin.cooper Жыл бұрын

    I would suggest having the ice and water guard or some other waterproof membrane lap up onto the side of the house. You could also use a metal flashing sealed at the top.

    What vise is that? Do you still like it? Bench looks awesome.

  • @calvin.cooper
    @calvin.cooper2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you! It is a 9 inch front bench vise. It serves its purpose- it has tremendous grip strength and runs smoothly. My only complaint is if you clamp something on the side, it will rack slightly (the other empty side will be pulled in more making the vise face and bench no longer parallel. Here is the link for the vise: www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B078XSLZ3S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. If you have the budget, I would go for a Sjoberg vise. They are very strong and probably the best front vise you can buy.

    Fantastic build! Appreciate both the aesthetics & workmanship. Also liked & subbed. P.S. If its not offending, could you consider not including a ton of background music and instead just keep the sound of the tools themselves? Voiceover is great, but the music fading in and fading out after each sentence is somewhat jarring to my brain :) Could just be me though!
