Alex Menendez has been photographing and shooting video since 1984. He is a Full Sail University graduate and has traveled the world extensively. This channel features input on his assignments over the past 3 decades and behind the scenes stories on each adventure. He will teach lessons, offer advice and give creative input on how you are to act on set, around clients and with the general public. I’m 17 and want to become a rodeo photographer! This vidoe is incredibly helpful but I do have a question! How am I supposed get rodeo photos for my portfolio if I’m not allowed to shoot at rodeos with a card? Any advice
Go sit in the stands at rodeos and take pics.
@@ironheadbill but he said a lot of rodeos will kick you out for that
@@Chronicallyginger maybe where he's from, but I live in Texas, and you can take pics from the stands. I'm going to my local rodeo tonight, I'll be posting a video and pics of it. The only time you would need permission is to get on the dirt with the riders, clowns and crew.

So the people that sign off are the people you will be competing against. Makes NO since I’m just taking food off of their table. Hopefully you will get signed on. You get it! Hard as heck to get, I did it without knowing any PRCA photogs, if you want it bad enough you may get it...sometimes its just as lucrative to shoot small non PRCA events.......actually most times.

Great video and info, thank you! What do you suggest is the best way to get portfolio content when you’re starting out? Can you shoot outside the arena if there isn’t a professional on the dirt? Hopefully this isn’t too silly of a question, I currently shoot ag and livestock so rodeo is something I will have to continue educating myself on but want to explore. Appreciate any advice and thanks so much in advance.
Try to cover as many rodeos as you can before you try for PRCA. Most smaller shows would love to have you, just introduce yourself ahead of time and dont just show up random...thats the hard part. Reach out and have fun!

AS of now the Canon R5. 70-200 2.8 is most used lens, use the 300 for Steer Wrestling. Happy Shooting!
i see a lots of good day shots from most rodeo photographers but the night and indoor stuff is the hardest to do without crazy iso settings .i have been working with strobes. i have been setting them up high and out of the eyes but it is an art and i got good at is over time . and just about everyone says there not a problem or did not notice them but it is always a concern as you don't see any of the prca videos showing any info on them i feel it would help a lot to maybe have some good Gide lines or some of the pro's say this is how it done right. i know most arenes are different but i always see daytime how to shoot rodeo but most the time it is a indoor or nighttime thing. it may just be a trade secret. i liked your video. if you could do a video one liting and rodeo that would be amazing. if you ever have time this is my web page to see my work thanks for your efert you put in to help other photospheres get better onyourmarkphotography.pic-time.com/portfolio

Nice video, I love your honesty. I've not tried Delta 3200 either but I think i will after seeing your shots, I like some grain. I'm a 50mm shooter, so I'd like to see what you capture once you get a 50. I think it takes a lot of guts to post your images and be very honest about them and not just show the best ones. Again thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the information, I'm Rodeo Photographer I respect the PRCA rules I do not have a card getting too old, but I wish they would respect my venues, but its all good
Great video! Thank you for putting this together. I shoot for NRA in Montana and love it! It's pretty cut throat though. I have shot NHRA, NASCAR, AMA Speedway and more but these photogs are very teritorial. I just keep shooting and submitting. Loads of respect for you and the rest of the PRCA photogs!

Hurt the stock? They are coming to destroy you. I have climbed many a fence to escape a bull bent on tearing me a new one. Broncs? I stay out of the arena because they’ll run you over. Almost happened in homestead. Even a cute little calf will run you over, and then they’ll laugh for a decade. Great video my friend. See you down the road

Going to the actual bank doesn't mean wealth. The guys at the bar have set up direct deposit and already have their home loan and car financing taken care of. They have no reason to go to the bank and just want some time to socialize with the guys. What a weird post.
Not weird at all, some guys use to go to the bar and now go home to the farm they own. And still do direct deposit from their other home while washing the trucks that are paid off........cheers
