Hey, I have already chosen The God of small things, but am finding it difficult to find a research focus. Any help?

Readers in or after 2024 may also want to look at “The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years” by Shubnum Khan, which takes the Gothic conventions into a different country and century but still feels intensely classic.

It's important to highlight not only the "human violence" theme, but speacially the male violence, that is normalized: both the protagonist's husband and her brother in law rape their respective wives, her father is physically abusive, among other acts of more "subtle" violence.

Decent overview, I did not know that the term gothic was initially a derogatory term from the Renaissance (what is your source on that?). A slight correction though: Dracula was not the first of his kind but he is the most iconic. The first was Lord Ruthven of The Vampire by John Polidori. There is also J Sheridan Lefanu's Carmilla.

I've never heard the term "doubling," but I have heard of parallelism. I also worry about making Sophocles into a "feminist" when the feminist movement hadn't even happened yet and most of Athens still believed in women strictly maintaining a domestic role. I've heard it argued that she only takes on this role because all of her male relatives are dead and she no longer has representation, which might appeal to an Athenian audience intent on ensuring that all citizens have representation (including women through their fathers, brothers, husbands, etc.)

'Doubling' is a term I've taken from the collected essays in the description, Anna. Admittedly, I hadn't heard the idea coined in this way before either. As for feminism, I think your point is valid. Whilst some refer to him as a 'proto-feminist' it is a contentious interpretation given the little we know about him contextually.

Hi, Chris. I really enjoyed this interesting insight into Antigone. I somehow thought of the Döpelganger motif, which I am interested in, so this is a very valid perspective for my research.
