If your home is properly insulated, go UP 1/2 size. If you had a large tree that was cut down, go up one size. If your home is not insulated well, INSULATE IT FIRST, especially old leaky windows. THEN see if you need a new A/C. Remember to have attic venting checked for proper installation including soffit vents. Sizing can be difficult. Depends on window sizes and location, type of windows, attic, insulation, trees, etc. Can't simply go by a universal chart. Remember, summers are getting hotter every year. As an A/C ages, it's capacity goes down. Oh and if you have kids or cook a lot, go up one size. Kids do love to run in and out, throwing your expensive conditioned air right out the door.

Looking forward to the video on side discharge units. I see these more on new construction and there seems to be 2-3 outdoor units instead of one unit like you see with conventional central systems. Also, what’s the difference between these and split duct systems since the outside equipment appears to be the same.
@grawey77Күн бұрын
Single speed (low complexity) longest lasting typically with minimal repair. Two stage means more complexity for higher efficiency. More expensive repairs are likely and overall longevity is reduced compared to single stage. Variable stage is the most efficient and most expensive to buy initially. Repairs that come up over the life of the system will be the highest. This could potentially make any energy savings evaporate.
@grawey77Күн бұрын
I have a single stage unit from 2005 that is still running like a top. The most I have done is spray off the condenser about once a year and replaced one capacitor. I did have to dust spider webs off the contactor once since that was causing it to act up. Keep them clean. Most people do nothing until there is a failure.

Don’t know about you, but I don’t want anyone monitoring and controlling my HVAC or anything that has to do with my home from a distance. I am sure big brother (GOV) is pressuring these companies for the implementation of smart technology into their products because they want the best for us, NOT! So you don’t believe! Look at California and what happens during peak hours, electrical grid shutdowns etc. What’s the point in having an EV if you cant charge it. I love technology, but these days it’s used more to control and watch than its real intended purpose, make it better! So when it gets hot or really cold and the GOV is loosing juice, they will simply shut your systems off in the blink of an eye because collectively we need to same the planet, so take one for the team and shut up! This is the same concept as remote metering and brings all the same vulnerabilities of being hacked via the internet etc. I don’t know about you, but I like to control my own destiny!😅

Any techs here? Working on parents system that's 21 years old. Previously, I've replaced the run capacitor twice around 5-7 years apart. Now, the outdoor AC is buzzing, not clicking and the fan is not running. Do you think its a contactor or fan motor? Could it still be the run capacitor? The capacitor doesn't look blown out from the outside. What videos on KZread would you recommend to test the contactor, capacitor or fan motor? The breaker is giving it power.

very nice topic, thank you for sharing! the tool is missing two important elements. (1) where does the homeowner set the thermostat? average yearly cooling hours may not be representative if not adjusted to the user's comfort zone. (2) doesn't appear to address houses with two ac units. i find the tool seriously under reports our electrical expenses by about 400%. our electric bill is massively dominated by hvac, and drops immensely in winter. with our solar gain, we actually seldom use heat in the winter. the seasonal difference allows us to make a rough estimate our cooling-related expenses, as distinguished from other less seasonally-affected electrical usage.

By the way great video it's awesome to have someone call out these fake HVAC techs that don't care to learn about proper troubleshooting and use scare techniques to try and replace equipment that is really still good or should be repaired.

How many more years do you expect out of a variable-speed system, such as a Trane XV18? My thoughts were that it is much easier on the system for it to ramp up to some appropriate compressor speed, and probably run for many hours, than it is to hard cycle on and off. Plus, I found out you can oversize much more because the variable speed means you can run at a lower compressor speed than normal without worry of it constantly shutting off and on.
