    The whole time I was talking to the salesman, I thought, this guy used to be a used car salesman. Used all the same tactics. Started out at $26k then dropped down to $23 with rebates. 10% off for paying cash upfront. He then asks, what number were you thinking... I threw $17k at him. He had to call his manager but was able to do it. Crazy... I felt violated when he left. They sent me a quote to replace the blower capacitor for $420. A $15 part. Thanks for the honest videos

    Yeah you might as well go buy a car. I will only ever pay 5k at most for a small sized system to 10k for larger units. Anything else is highway robbery.

    A lot of times the sales person knows you are over a barrel with a down system. I went out and bought 2 spare units (1 window and 1 portable). This ensures I'm coming to the table and I'm not on fire hot, with a grumpy family. Allows me to take my time and make a good decision.

    I did the same thing when mine went out 3 weeks ago. I tore out my unit and getting ready to put in an air handler in another month. Only concerned with heat coming up this winter for now. The best time to replace a system is when everyone thinks you don’t need one. The worst time is when you have to.

    I recently had to replace my heating and AC unit. I needed a 2 ton 16 seer unit. I had 5 contractors come to my home and I got prices from 5700 to 14,000 dollars. Naturally people would go with the 5700 system but this contractor was hard to contact so I said if they are this hard to contact then if something is wrong with the system then I could not get in contact with them. Bottom line the cheapest price may not always be the best price.

  • @highlanderknight

    @highlanderknight

    I'd say the cheapest price is almost always NOT the best price and there are usually reasons for them being cheap. Low quality and substandard work, or they know they won't stand behind it, and/or they have a poor reputation and must low-ball a quote just to get any work at all.

    Doesn't matter in my case. I couldn't afford either of them so I'd have to go with window units. They have literally priced themselves out of most people's budgets. 5k is the most I will ever spend on something like this. Anything more is either highway robbery or simply something that is no longer attainable or reasonable.

    Great video. I swapped out a 3.5T/80k gas system in July 2018. My local small proprietor a/c guy did the job for $5,650 complete using Goodman equipment which was what I had previously. I live in the San Diego area so the equipment is drop shipped from Los Angeles to a local HVAC wearhouse . Two techs RNR’d the indoor and outdoor components in one day., and I have been pleased. I got a total of three quotes including Home Depot at $11,500, and Lowes at $19,000. Both Big Box stores sent out two sales people with fancy computer presentations. You see where this is going, right…high pressure sales. My recommendation to you followers is never go with big companies who advertise, it needs to be paid for somehow.

The first choice was $62,000 down to $39,000 for the basic two stage gas furnace and 16 SEER AC units, a 2 & 4 ton units. A bit obscene. Needless to say, will be taking more bids. I think that a lot of HVAC companies look at certain addresses and add the "millionaire" charge.

I'm thinking that's A LOT of money for a run of the mill budget AC system. I looked online at your pricing in TX and didn't notice the air handler listed in your pricing. I work for an HVAC company and thanks for first pointing out the equipment price increases. As far as contractor pricing, there are some that will try to go the salesman, financing pricing route, but not most in my area (we don't). Quotes over the phone can't be trusted if given at all, especially if the company hasn't been to your house. They have zero idea of how well or how poorly your previous system was installed, if your ductwork is adequate or if you cheaped out before. Even if your current system was sized right. For pricing, just ask, if someone is cheap, why? Is it because they need the work because they don't have much because of a poor reputation? Are they super expensive because they are putting you in the front of the line ahead other installs that have been waiting? Also in my area there is a severe shortage of HVAC workers for most companies, meaning the workers in general have higher labor costs to retain them (and as a result you may have a backlog of installations). Those are just a few things to think about. Just be smart about your quotes, and remember thare are valid reasons for some prices and in other cases somewhat greedy ones.

    In your linked prices for a new Air Conditioning system are you including both the condenser unit and the evaporator coil? What about the thermostat? For example, the average unit for 2.5 ton you list is $3,746. Which of the three is included?

    Sorry. But everything needs to be looked at prior to giving someone a quote. Gas lines, regulator, tstat wire, duct work, return size, condensate drain...etc. Too many times a simple change out leads to way more additional work and materials that what was quoted for. If not performed properly, it will fail inspection, contractor doesn't make a profit and the homeowner will not be satisfied with the overall performance of the system. An unhappy/complaining customer will suck every bit of profit you intended to make. So, someone who gives you a quote in 30-45 minutes is not doing the customer or their company any good. To be honest, if a customer wants to rush me out the door in that time span, I'm walking away from that customer anyway. Been there, done that and they are always a problem customer after the job is complete. You pay for what you get. No need to pay too much though, nor should you go with the cheapest quote. The contractors who are usually in the middle of your received quotes will be the best option.

    I am in Los Angeles and been getting quotes for around 22K for new install (no current central air system) of the Daikin Fit (3 Ton) for 1200 sqft home. I am interested in the FIt mainly due to the side exhaust design and not having much yard space. It also seems to have good reviews on KZread. I am guessing some of the 22K is electrical work (no 240 circuits yet).. but looking at your prices I don't see any mention in the "New AC Unit Costs" about the price including any electrical work.. the list of "what is included" below the "How Much Does a new AC Unit Cost?" looks like it is for a replacement as I don't see any mention of electrical or running ducts (how many) etc etc. Do your prices include electrical work? Also If anyone knows of other makes\models of heat pumps with the same form factor (side exhaust) as the Fit I would be very interested to check them out.

    Boo. Senior vs Junior tech? You suck. As a teacher I constantly see senior techs with bad habits that'll reduce the life of your system- not flowing nitrogen while brazing, not taking the vacuum below 500 microns, throwing shit together and saying "good enough." It's the younger guys that had to learn the most current rules and regulations so it's easiest for them to install systems to code. Plus the ones I know are usually more gung-ho I hope you got a "senior" tech for your install

I want to buy my new hvac system thru Home Depot they will deliver the new unit to the store or to my home. However, when I contact a HVAC business, they seem uninterested in taking the installation work. Apparently not enough Windfall profit. I simply want a change out of the old unit for the new one. Yeah I couldn't have said it better myself. Well done Bob. Also there is no such thing as a good place on line for reviews. BBB is known for white washing reviews years ago by those paying for an A+ rating. People largely do not want to be tracked which would be required for a review to be considered *real* paying for reviews is a conflict of interest, but that doesn't stop many from doing it. The old advice of the time? *If it sounds to good to be true it probably is* The best guide is your own, find a contractor who can fix your AC system avoid shiny objects that lead you to place you're best not to go. HVAC is only going to be more complicated in a few short years and then again in 2035 / 2036 if the USA is to stay on target set by the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.
